I think the main reason why this film will end up being one of Marvel's most forgettable films is how the film throws 10 main characters at you, and expects you to care about them when they hardly receive the proper time to grow and establish themselves. It also doesn't help that they all have very similar designs and superpowers that the media has already seen numerous times.

I full heartily agree. I will remind you however that the infinity saga did need some of those "just okay" movies. The first two thor movies and the ant man movies I think are a great example of this. While I personally like those movies and many others do as well, they don't hold a candle to rangnorok and endgame. You do need movies like thor the dark world, ant man and the wasp, and eternals to help the overarching story. I don't necessarily think all 10 of the eternals are going to stay in the mcu. Some might just go their own way to stop other eternals from inheriting the deviant gene and some might just have to kill themselves to stop the deviant gene from spreading as they were infected. This will all probably be addressed in a sequel with all of this getting explained by thanos's brother starfox/Eros. I think the more notable eternals will stay like joilee and Harrington, Eros will stay and they all will join a big group up movie with the other heros, but all the others will either leave on their own quest or die.

The villain was simply there as a consequence of Ikaris’ actions. He wasn’t the main antagonist of the film by any means.

I think a contributing factor to the reviews being so low is the "superhero burn out" people are beginning to experience. When the MCU first began it was a new and exciting thing and thus people were less likely to criticize it but now we are twenty six films in and over a decade later. I haven't bothered to see an MCU film since Far From Home and I don't think that will change with Eternals. It's just so overwhelming what with them pumping out 2-3 of these every single year so much to the point that none of the movies feel special and they all just blend together. I think I feel comfortable saying that I have officially lost interest.

The movie was trying to be like guardian of the Galaxy and didn't set up for me to care too much about these guys to be honest. Nobody really had a great personality except the Gilgamesh and the Indian dude. But they both had such minor roles in the entire film. The flash back to present made the film less interesting on how they strung the entire film. Shoulda stayed chronological order to present instead. Also there was no real villian except themselves. It was a me vs self type of script which is meh. Of course the main antagonist is their creator but he does really nothing during the film until the end. So really it was a movie of gods who fucked eachother for 7000 years and didn't question anything until thanos did a snap lol.

The biggest issue with this movie is probably the first hour consisting of last of us part 2 level flashbacks, that are so long and drawn out. When then they cut back to the present day I'm just like, "oh, right. Plot." Worse part is, is that the flash backs don't really make me care all that much about the characters. Example being the romance subplot, these two characters feel so dry for most the movie. Funnily enough the black eternal's marriage with his husband (I don't remember any of their names) is handled better and that's not even given that much screen time. I care about none of these characters really, despite the constant flashbacks to try to flesh them out, they're just kinda forgettable.

Remember how Breaking Bad managed to stay good after Gus, they introduced the neo you know whats. Going generic after the biggest individualized saga is typical and will work just as it has in many franchises. After frieza were 2 useless androids before 18 and 17. Not only is Eternals a super dope movie, Charlie is right in that it's exciting what it sets up, there are like 10 characters they could pick (they'll pick Thena) to do stand alone or trilogy movie sets for, then Eternals 2 might be as good as an Avengers movie, probably better than Age of Ultron (I already think Eternals is better than Age of Ultron upon release, retrospectively I do love Age of Ultron more now though)

By the end of Shang Chi I’d fell in love with the characters and it became one of my favourite movies of all time immediately and I could name countless scenes and things I liked from it. With Eternals I can probably mention like four scenes of which two of them were pretty cool and with the characters I couldn’t tell you the names of any of them other than the girl named after a soda and Icarus because they said his name like 50 times.

The conflict between Ikarus and the rest could have worked so much better if the chemisty was better, it seems like they were barely affected by his betrayal and had no problem with needing to take him down. Don't worry Charlie, most comic fans don't even know the Eternals. They're an old Jack Kirby creation that never really caught on, they get mentioned when the Celestial's experiments do but aren't exactly prolific as other super races like the Inhumans or mutants.

This may have been better as a TV show. You have a ton of characters and the eternals are supposed to be the ones who fight the biggest of bads so a TV show would've been better to further develop the characters and show how bad the villain really is. And while in glad they are straying more away from the avengers it feels like they still wanna do the same thing. So far I loved the shows and movies that have come out showing new people, but at the same time while they took people off of their plate, by adding multiverse issues and new people they are expanding it too far. I think if they did more stuff I would like more with the new younger avengers bc they would all mostly be new characters and while it touched on stuff we did know it would also give us something new.

And in that movie we learn about half the characters through each other, like we learn about Rocket through Groot, Yondu through Quill, and the blue girl through Gamora. They're not all seperate characters, you basically can't have one without the other in the first movie.

I enjoyed this movie way more than I expected. The history aspect was very cool, the action scenes were great, the Eternals were likeable aside from Sprite who was just annoying and Ikaris who was boring most of the movie but as the villain he was alright. As a Flash fan, I also really like how they did Makkari (the speedster), it was dope to see her in action because Speedsters don’t get too much love in terms of action scenes in movies.

I really like the movie initially but after thinking about it, Shang-Chi story is not that great. Like the motive behind the MC doesn't make sense. His anger towards his father was not even justified. He agrees to join forces with him at an early age. It couldn't be because of how his father is bad for killing people because Shang-Chi ends up killing the person anyways. He was also a shitty brother for leaving his sister behind after promising her to not leave her side. The only thing that truly excelled in the movie was the choreography and CGI. The translation was also claimed to have been misinterpreted as native mandarin speakers said that there were a lot of cool and clever idioms.

IMO Marvel wasted getting Jolie, Harrington, and Madden on this project, they've been headhunting those actors for years now, and this is what they did with all that talent. Avengers 1 worked as an ensemble movie because the solo films set up the characters. Guardians worked because even though the main heroes were new they were all very distinct and it was a comedy so they didn’t need to be set up as deep characters on their first go for the movie to work. And here this movie comes to throw 10 visually bland generic characters at you in yet another typical visually washed-out relatively serious generic-looking MCU movie expecting you to care about more generic PG13 action and these 10 bland nobodies enough to enjoy the movie. I was saying exactly this from before the first trailer, even back when the character designs were first introduced. These are not characters you can do an ensemble movie without any prior setup with, and it seemed that Marvel went out of their way to make them as visually boring and uniform as possible. It had every sign of being generic junk and I had no hype. This was the first MCU movie in years that I confidently predicted would be mediocre. The writing was on the wall the moment they showed off a whopping 10 generic D-tier comic characters dressed in matching costumes.

@@dokatafrinz1349 most introduction/origin MCU movies have a hard time using and distinguishing the characters to their full potential on the first go, but at least Shang Chi was somewhat unique for an MCU movie (being a bit of a Kung Fu movie with some admittedly great fight scenes) and it also didn’t have an absurd amount of characters so at least the audience could pick one to like (even if not all that well developed) instead of being distracted by a dozen new characters at once. Eternals is as generic as it gets. The powers are generic, the costumes are generic, it’s all extremely generic. The characters are all as generic as they get. There’s no “side-theme” of the movie aside from being superhero themed. Let’s look at the other character’s first movies (that focused on them): Iron Man is the OG that set the quippy fun formula. Captain America is a campy WW2 adventure movie. Thor is mythology-themed with a fish out of water twist. Guardians is a straight up comedy space adventure. Ant Man is a heist movie. Spider-Man HC is a teen comedy. Dr Strange is MCU inception. Black Panther was basically the lion king with a pretty cool Wakanda superhero skin. Shang Chi was a Kung Fu movie. And then there’s Eternals, which is… mythology again but even blander and more generic than Thor 1 and way too many characters to make any of them memorable. The only other movie as comparatively identity-less as Eternals is Captain Marvel, which was just another by the books superhero movie with 90s nostalgia and not much else. Eternals doesn’t even have a nostalgic setting going for it tho. It’s easily the least memorable movie of the entire franchise IMO.

The movie made it work. Not every character is great, but I liked most of them and they worked in the story. This isn't generic MCU stuff at all. It is very different. It has a completely different tone and way less jokes. I quite enjoyed the movie. I would probably give it a 7/10.
