Another option would be to find a small block of FIRM Closed Cell Foam, place a small section of velcro on one side with the other attaching portion on the inside of the case, then wedge the block in place to keep the pinned plug from wiggling free. Leave the Ranger Band on as well as added insurance and the wedged foam should keep it in place, too. My last question has to do with extending the range of the Baofeng radios by "Daisy Chaining" multiple repeaters along a desired path. By this I mean can you place two (2) or more say 8-10 km apart from each Mohave device and end up with them literally repeating your transmitted signal? And would you hear multiple responses back with the senders voice and have to literally COUNT the "echo's" so you'd know when the furthest repeater would have triggered to make sure the message arrived X km away? Obviously, a LARGER repeater with significantly more power would be the answer but it would be anywhere NEAR as portable in the field. TIA for any answers you can provide me, assuming you even get to read this since the OP has been up over a year. Take care and I've now subscribed.

If you notice that band is holding the connection into the speaker/mic port on the side which on these uv-5r's is flawed and has to be held in with "something", likely the reason for the band.

Looks like a nice unit but i see a couple design flaws you should consider addressing. Especially considering the emergency and preparedness aspect of radio comms. I can't tell if there is an internal battery to power everything or just the batteries on the individual components. If individual, you might add in a battery for longer life. You could easily set it up just like the external connection where both devices are fed by USB from the pack. Those external connections should NOT be type-A connections for convenience as that requires a somewhat non-conventional cord. Yes they are easy to get, but for simplicity it should be a typical connection port like USB-micro or the newer type-c. It looks like you charge the devices in the box separately. By adding the internal battery pack you could make this a single or double charge connection, all with off the shelf stuff. This would also stabilize charging from a small portable solar panel (10-40w size). Don't know how much available space is left over in the case but if it's built how I think, adding in a USB battery bank to the case could accommodate the power requirements and connections from the external ports if you have one that supports dual-charging. It looks like you're using the aftermarket 5R battery that allows USB charging. If you need a radio with the same abilities but smaller footprint look at the S9+. Alternatively maybe one of the water resistant units that uses the non-kenwood connection and secures to the radio via screw. That I don't currently have experience with so don't have a model recommendation though Baofeng does have them.

I usually bring some goodies to hand out at the classes, but the primary value is in the knowledge that you bring home from the course.
