You would think they used graded bolts to fasten the camper to the truck. Surprised they snapped. I use 2 bolts through the bed floor up front on my slide in camper and chains at the rear so that if there is going to be more twisting from the trail, I loosen up the chains. Never snapped a bolt in 4 years. Also use nuts with integrated delrin washers to prevent loosening. Looking forward to your next adventure.

When I finish my build I’ll be applying a trick that is used in the military and a few other industries to get a quick check on bolts and such. Take a paint marker and put a line on it, going from the center out, making sure to continue down the side of it, and then onto the surface that it is bolted to. In the military we called a torque stripe (as we would wait until after it was torqued to apply it) and I think some other industries call it a witness mark, who knows what else it is called, but I’m sure you get t he idea. Make sure that the color paint marker you use is a high contrast color, such as white for going on black paint. This way you can do a quick visual inspection of all your bolts/nuts/fasteners and be sure that none of them have worked them selves loose over time. Anything more than 1/8 of a turn should warrant a re-torque. Hope this helps y’all!

The Mojave National Preserve has lots to see. Kelso Dunes is definitely worth a stop. You can hike the dunes and many people disperse camp nearby. There are some hiking trails in the preserve and we hiked one, Teutonia Peak Trail - (Trailhead: 5 miles north of Cima, Calif. on Cima Road.) The trail goes through the world's largest and densest Joshua tree forest en route to a rocky peak with expansive views of Cima Dome and beyond. 3 miles round-trip. Another out-of-the-way stop is the town of Nipton. They have some Yurts, camping, store, gas, etc. When we visited around Christmas a couple of years ago, Santa’s “Bitch” was manning the cash register. She was in full persona. Yeah, they get a rowdy crowd at times.

Chris Scoleri's comment regarding bolt tightening sums it up! Get something like a torque limiting socket set for your wheel lugs and camper bolts. find out the proper torque for those bolts and carry a battery powered impact driver like a Milwaukee or similar quality. You need these tools for the final tighten but not to remove lugs. Use an impact socket to remove. Also don't leave your water pump on. Turn it off and use the last water in the line each time you use your water. You'll prevent potential leaks and keep the pressure off the fittings, which you should also check routinely. There's so much to maintain on our rigs while in the backcountry that will keep you from needing a shop. Proactive vs reactive is our motto.

Love the Mojave Rd gonna do it again soon. I just wanted to throw in my 2 cents about the flatbed bolts loosening/shearing. I have a rig with a utility bed and an Alaskan camper bolted through the floor. Many people myself included have mistakenly thought you can just bolt a very rigid bed/camper combo to a truck frame that is designed to flex, you can run into serious problems off-roading. You are literally ripping the bolts out of the frame ESPECIALLY if you just increase the strength of the bolts , you can end up cracking the frame! I just went through this whole dance and just recently completed an articulating subframe to interface between my bed and truck frame and it is 100% better now. I’m happy to elaborate on the design with you via pm but I wouldn’t ignore the issue. I m not trying to sell you something I’d just hate to see you end up breaking your sweet rig! Jeff
@alexburke18994 жыл бұрын
Can you maybe post the rough outline here for other people who want to off-road with a camper? I understand I don’t want the tie downs that attach to the bolts too tight to give it some room to move a bit, but that’s all I really know and I’m interested in learning more if you have time to explain more.
@cletusvandamme62624 жыл бұрын
Thank you for addressing this point. It did occur to me that, while it is good that they were given stronger bolts, sometimes what can happen is that you have now shifted the potential failure point to ANOTHER part of the system. And you might not like where this new failure point takes you. As the saying goes, "Better to deal with the devil you know than the devil you don't."
@GoActionDog4 жыл бұрын
Alex Burke if you are just running a slide in camper inside a stock bed you should use spring loaded turnbuckles that are designed for hauling a camper. These provide some give to mitigate the truck twisting and you do not want to over tighten them . The issue I’m addressing is when you are running a flat bed or utility bed, with that setup you are bolting the camper solidly through the floor so you need to account for some flex in the way the bed bolts to the frame. There is a book called “building an overland camper smile.amazon.com/Overland-Camper-manual-Haynes-Manuals/dp/1785210769 there is a good chapter in there that covers the principles to apply in designing a system for your rig. Hope this helps!
@sulkersmitchell8494 жыл бұрын
I would add that it is important to understand how the frame of the particular model of truck one is designed to articulate. In the first generation Tacoma's for example, the frame is not all boxed for rigidity to allow more articulation between front and rear suspension, whereas Tundra's had a more rigid frame. Further, how the vehicle is being used will affect how much torque and flex actually occurs. The more off-camber and twisty the road surface, the more articulation is likely to occur...
@sulkersmitchell8494 жыл бұрын
Some discussion of the merits of this flexibility, non-scientific, is contained in this thread: www.tacomaworld.com/threads/what-the-hell-flexy-frame-means.65127/page-2

You guys should take a look into safety wire. It's a technique used on race cars and in aviation, where you drill a small sideways hole at the tip of the bolt so you can pull a steel wire trough and tie it to a fixed object nearby. It prevents bolts from flying off into the wild.

Funny, just went through Mojave Road a week ago. Seems to be the road where bolts and nuts come lose. I lost the nut holding my passenger front shock absorber in place. Luckily Jeeps are build in a crude but reliable way, so I was able to drive out to Baker where I was able to find a nut and a washer in a salvage box of one of the local tow shops (Baker Auto Repair). Those guys were really helpful. I was still missing grommets, but at least the nut and washer kept the shock from falling out with large articulation, so we went back, finished out trip, drove over to Vegas for some well earned food and then home another 600 miles to northern California. I'm still driving with the makeshift fix, but the spare parts should arrive tomorrow and then I can fix that rubbing, clonking squeak. Glad you were able to drive out - nothing better than that. PS: you may want to take a look at Gaia GPS - great and affordable software for navigating where no cellphone has gone before. It's not a navigation software, more of an interactive map with overlays and your current position. Don't expect "turn left" kinda instructions but you can see exactly where you are and thus take the right turn. Maps and many overlays can be downloaded for areas without reception (very handy feature)

Very cool video. It is easy to get off the road there, I road it on my bike a few months ago, numerous roads intersecting and taking off. Fun story, I stopped to take a picture and this guy came up on the exact same bike as me, which is rare and we ended up talking for a few hours. It was really amazing to me how many people were coming by in rental cars, yes, cars! An idea for your bolt situation, so you don't torque them every 5,000 miles. Use a paint pen, to mark the bolt head and washer to the frame/metal to see if they drift or move.
@BoundForNowhere4 жыл бұрын
Yeah that is a great idea we've also thought about getting those things that truckers use to mark lugs.
@bryancohn94064 жыл бұрын
In aircraft and auto racing it’s called paint stripping. You can check the torque of bolts over and over without issue but a paint stripe on the nut that continues into the chassis or bracket is a quick and easy visual inspection. If the bolt or nut moves the paint cracks and flakes/falls off, bingo you know you have a loose bolt. However (there is always a catch isn’t there?) in the rough terrain you guys travel through the dirt and grime can cover the paint mark. I’m a racing car mechanic by trade and I’ve seen the paint marks get chipped off by flying debris (dirt, stones, etc). Also the modern locking nut called a K-Nut or Jet Nut largely made paint stripping a lost bit of knowledge. Now you know more about really random and mostly useless stuff. Your welcome! 😁

You might want to create a maintenance schedule or trip checklist for items like that. Generally speaking, those bolts ( I am assuming they are metric) should be property class 10.9 or 12.9. The heads would be marked as such. You never use anything lower for a critical safety application. If it's SAE, then the bolts would be grade 8. Blue locktite would be a good way to go too. Here's the other end of it. Over-torquing the bolts, especially with an impact gun can lead to problems. Don't ever let someone hit it with an impact gun. All bolts have a range they are supposed to be torqued to, to clamp properly, not loosen, and not fatigue. Cranking one down with an impact gun can cause them to stretch, fatigue and fail. I would check it periodically with a torque wrench and not go beyond spec for that bolt. If you find a bolt that loosens periodically under correct torque and with locktite applied, there may be an engineering or fitment problem. You should apply the same strategy (no locktite though) of proper torque to your wheels. If you have your vehicle maintained, shops tend to run everything down with an impact gun. Given that you are well off the highway, I would suggest taking ownership of those maintenance items yourself. If you do it, you know it was done, and done right. You won't find a sheared off bolt, lug, or not be able to change a tire. After 40 plus years of off road travel, vehicle and equipment builds, I have become very disciplined about how I do things.

new subscriber here hello :D Question.. were they not high tensile bolts to start with then, cheap bolts from online stores shipped from china is usually 4.6 and utter junk.. is that why they sheared? In the UK generally high tensile starts at grade 8.8 for construction stuff bolting steel buildings together but on vehicle applications 10.9 is standard fitment for most stuff due to the higher carbon content. You can go to 12.9 as well for more vibration intensive applications like engine mounts and what not. There is a higher grade in the 14's but I've never seen them used in anything (yet) Note though, don't "try to get a turn on them" at every service or you will over torque them, just pick a suitable Ft/lb / Nm rating for the bolts size taking care of choosing whether the thread was lubricated or dry (as this changes the torque reading somewhat) and just use a torque wrench on it at regular intervals instead, if the wrench clicks, all is good. Hope that post isn't too condescending and I shall enjoy following your travels from here on in. Peace out. x

That camper shell if those were the only two front bolts? I'd run a rope or strap from a tie point at the front over the top of the shell. I've hauled my sea kayaks for 15 years and I've heard a lot of 'lost the kayak on the road' stories, many of which the kayak yanked both roof racks when it came off. In not one of these stories was there both a fore and aft tie down. These are the critical ties. So I'd be fully confident to drive your rig at freeway speeds if it had a tie down from the front to keep it from lifting up. Not sure if this fits your situation, but it should be useful information. The torque stripe is a great tip. Thanks.

Definitely don't give it a turn every time. Gotta use a torque wrench. If it doesn't come loose, but you give it 1/8th of a turn every oil change, you may strip the threads

These videos take a long time to edit to what you see here. We take a lot of footage that all needs to be sorted. We also work fulltime and that has to take priority over making these videos since these do not pay the bills. We had a hectic work schedule over the last few months that forces us to take a bit of a break from making videos

Roger that. It’s great having jobs where you can have the best office in the world. It’s refreshing to see two utubers working full time jobs. Great work!!

Thanks for another entertaining video, and for allowing us to come along on your adventures, it's always a good time :) On a side note...I wanted to recommend a natural product I recently began using and thought might interest you guys. It's called Lume, and it is awesome! Please check it out, you won't be disappointed, both men and women can use it too.

Wonder if those sheared bolts contributed to the appearance of frame flex I committed on before on a prior episode.
