I'm glad to see a video like this. The whole reason I subscribed is because you mentioned a loss on another video where you sold a luka for like $1000 and then saw it go for $20,000. I can definitely relate. I've been collecting pokemon cards my entire life but like most people stopped around the time I was in college. In 2019 I was low on cash and decided to sell some cards on mecari. I knew nothing of graded cards and was letting a lot of stuff go for cheap. My biggest regret is I let a topps chrome tekno charizard go for $2k. I had pulled the card when I was 7 and held on to it for about 20 years. A few months later I saw the same card go for about 11k. I found out a psa graded card had gone for 24k. This is truly my biggest regret in the hobby. However this did spark a new love for the hobby as I dug myself into a rabbit hole of information in hopes that I never make a mistake like that again. This has led me to find new passions like marvel, star wars and sports cards. I hope I can upgrade my collection over time to have a truly great graded collection. I'm glad to have rediscovered the hobby.

I just started truly investing and collecting about a year and a half ago. I remember before Ruggs incident I probably spent almost 800 bucks on rated rookies, rpas, rookie autos, etc. One of my worst buys ever. Totally regret buying into Henry Ruggs. Just shows how one incident can change so many things.
@RickM232 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing. Lots of lessons to be learned. I’ve been a collector since the 90s with MJ being the first player I collected. I only spend extra money I can afford to lose. I did buy most of my collection during 2009-11 when cards were cheap (my first job was also 2009 so I had money to spend). My “Best” investments: $1-5 rookie cards of Kobe, Lebron, KD, Steph, MJ autos at $200-400, Lebron autos at $150-200. I bought mostly card lots from eBay, several duplicate RCs of each player that I mentioned. Also graded my own cards, sold most of my PSA 10s to fund a free collection. My “Worst” investments: DRobinson, Shaq, Dwight, DRose, and anything bought 2021. Even if I bought cards during 2021, I didn’t go crazy. I only used money from my eBay card sales. My more recent PC/investments: Tatum, Luka, Tom Brady (before he won with the Bucs). Also FYI, I still buy cheap. I like to look for the cheaper low pop cards of players I PC.

When I was first got back into card collecting as an adult, I was buying a lot of cards online and wasn't aware of how common fakes were yet. But after I bought my first fakey, that was a quick lesson learned. From time to time I'll still find them when I'm buying collections or lots, but I've luckily not fallen for it as a single card purchase.

Worst investment by far was investing in Henry Ruggs before his incident. Was scooping up SSP's and Autos for dirt cheap and then the DUI crash happened. Almost made me quit sports cards until Micah Parsons saved me. Love the videos Jay, I'm from Manteca so it's nice to see a somewhat local guy in the hobby crushing it.

I just started collecting & investing in sports cards just before the NFL season started. My FIRST card I’ve ever bought, was a Romeo Doubs Turn of Century /5. Still have high hopes for him, But I overpaid to say the least. Definitely my worst investment so far. Learning along the way 😂

Just got into sports cards this year so buying as I’m learning. Bought too much too quick and on credit then the market dropped hard in October so yeah if I sold all my cards could probably break even. It’s been interesting. I’m learning retail is mostly trash that’s for sure. Also chasing some autos in F1 boxes with no luck. But I did complete a set of 21 topps chrome f1 sapphire and pulled a 1/1 so it’s not been all bad. Def a fun hobby.

I collect a lot of baseball but I do not buy big enough cards to consider that I made an investment. The biggest card that I bought was a 2015 Donruss Diamond King 1/1 printing plate of Miguel Cabrera. I will never sell that one kol I like the Stafford. You have lost on 1 card what I get paid in 1 month on disability. If I had $1000 I would feel very very rich lol Maybe eventually the cards will go back up in price over the next few years. You just never know.
@guywilliams65692 жыл бұрын
Okay so if you spend $300 on a card, then it goes up like crazy to say $500 and you sell it, you then have $200 profit.. however if you buy that card back at anything over $200, it's costing you money! I don't know who came up with that idea of "sell it when it was hot and then buy it back later", but that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard! The only way that works out really well is if you weren't into the card for very much from the beginning, it went absolutely crazy and say 10x in value, and then somehow down the line you end up being able to buy it for 1X or 2x what you originally paid.. otherwise, with the time energy and everything put into it, it's just a wash at best!

If you've speculated into a young prospect, and they haven't taken off like you thought, or they got injured, BUT you still believe they can make an impact in the future, it can still be worth it to buy the dip. I mean, if you're into those two Davis Mills for a combined $900ish, why not spend another $100 for a third one now, and lower your cost basis from $450 a piece down to $333 a piece.

Seriously, I dont lose money..My strategy is that I only buy superstars i.e. Kobe, LeBron, Jordan, Brady etc. The 9nly rookies I buy are rookies that I actually know are going to be 🌟 like Joe Burrow etc. If I to sit & guess about a card if its going be a good investment I wait until that player actually accomplishes smthg significant. The only time I invest in Rookies is "if" I buy a 📦. I take my cards & only grade the cards that I know will get a high grade but I only grade at the cheapest service level

I guess Im just glad they werent part of the steriod sluggers. Also invested in McGwire and Canseco among others. Between that and my Manning led Colts being outshined by the Pats and the Pacer's basketball brawl, player involved shootings and bar fighte... i was done with sports cards. Unfortunately Kevin Durant is a super talented athlete who has an ego problem, at least to me. He has the world’s biggest chip on his shoulder and I for one admire his skill set but I don’t care about him one bit. I realize that he could care less about my opinion or anyone else’s opinion.

The worst loss I took on a card was a Topps Tripple Threads Brett Favre Auto. Got for trade bait, but of course Brett had to be an asshole and steal money from the poor to pay for a stupid volleyball stadium. Somethings you just cant predict lol.

Bought a Mahomes Vitreous /10 for $175. Recent sales are 60-100…😢 just brutal, but I love the card.

Vintage is probably the safest bet. Investing in rookies is scary....Look at Andrew Luck. So much money lost with him. Jimmy G as well.
