For this list, we’ll be ranking only the main numbered entries in the Final Fantasy franchise, so don’t expect to see any of the spinoffs on this list. Sorry Final Fantasy Tactics. And while all of these titles are beloved, some of them do rank higher both critically and in gamers’ hearts the world over. What Final Fantasy games are your favorites? Final Fantasy X will always be my all time favourite Final Fantasy game. Though I won't argue with those who state VI, VII or IX as their favourite as I can understand why they feel that way. Because they're great!

FF VII is the Michael Jordan of Final Fantasy because it is the one that popularized Final Fantasy to the whole world. FF VI is like Wilt Chamberlain who maybe could be the GOAT but it was a completely different era when he played. My personal number 1 is FF XIV btw considering Shadowbringers.

IX is my personal favorite, and I’m kinda shocked it was placed above VII. The return of the traditional fantasy setting and classes were really special to me, and it made me smile seeing it so high on this list!

It's better than VII and most critics agree. Most critics will place VI as the best in the series for good reason, and IX is often placed second. The main debate is whether VII or X is 3rd. I personally think X is better.

FFVI has been a driving force in my life ever since I played back in 95. It shaped, changed and influenced me on the way I view many a things. It's my favorite game ever and I'm gonna love it as long as I live.

Finally a list that doesn't put FF7 at nr1.. Yeah I love FF7 but imo FF6 is still the best and I'm glad some people agree. Kefka is still by far the best villain and the story has some of the best moments in the entire franchise.. The suicide scene, The Phantom train...THAT poison scene.

Believe it or not I love final fantasy 12. The non stop grind to level up every character, getting the best gear by selling rare loot. And then beating every single hunt especially Yiazmat, which took me 6 hours since they didn’t input the speed up option till later on.

Fantastic list! The fact that everyone's personal ranking is potentially different I think demonstrates just how awesome the FF series is in general. The games cater to so many different preferences in terms of gameplay, world and character designs, themes, and even genres, that if you're an RPG fan at all, you'd be down with at least a few of them

Random chest loot grinding, first mainline too not be turnbased, maps were ridiculously large in some areas. Those were bound to be turnoffs for some. I hated the battle system at first. Until I unlocked a bunch more magic and tecs and maxed out gambit slots, then I loved the customization. The zodiac age fixed the obnoxious walking distance with speed up and autosaves.I still hate the chest grinding, though. Still one of my personal top 5 in the series.

@@slick_anonymous1126 If you have the time, I love xenoblade chronicles, but if I only have 1-2 hours a day to play games, it takes too long to finish irl, and I lose interest in the game, the world, story and characters. if the game is 60 hours and I play 1.5 hours a day that means it will take me 40 days to beat the game, that's a long time.

My Personal Rank goes to: 1 - Final Fantasy XIV. 2 - Final Fantasy XII. 3 - Final Fantasy VI. 4 - Final Fantasy VIII. 5 - Final Fantasy IX. 6 - Final Fantasy IV. 7 - Final Fantasy X. 8 - Final Fantasy VII. 9 - Final Fantasy XIII. 10 - Final Fantasy XV. 11 - Final Fantasy III. 12 - Final Fantasy V. 13 - Final Fantasy. 14 - Final Fantasy II. I did played all of them multiple times except for Final Fantasy V that i only did once ( going to play again with Pixel Remaster ) and Final Fantasy XI that i never played before, so i won't Rank a game i never tried. In general, i like all Final Fantasy games and there's no game i think it's really bad, despite some huge disappointed that i got ( like, for example, XIII and XV ) they still ok for me. I almost played all Spin-offs as well except for Mobile ones ( the only ones i tried a bit it was Opera Omnia and Brave Exvius for a couple of weeks, but i can't deal with Gatchas ).

For me, my first one I played was VII. However, VIII was the first one I finished. Besides those two, I played IX, X, and XV. Each had its charm and unique aspects. This is a fun video and relieve great moments.

Oh my god, a ranking I relatively agree with. I love seeing IX get its recongnition. When we got to number 5 on the list, I realized VI, VII, IX, & X would have to be in the top 4, and all 4 of those are my favorites! Oh noes, here comes the one negative...hrnnhh....cant hold it in...FFIII was way too high...like, FFIII over V? Noooo.

The top two games are VI and VII. VI is always the jrpg fans choice, but there's no denying the influence VII had. Third is a distant third and should be X or IX. Again depending on taste. IX's battle system was too slow for my tastes, and it had a habit of highlighting it (lots of the game without a full party, high % of back attacks, etc). Also having no control over trance was a major flaw. Good story though. X was too linear and didn't really open up until the end, but the battle system was probably one of the best in the mainline series.

Ff9 is definitely my all time favorite, followed closely by ffx tied with ff7. All 3 are amazing, especially the ps1 era of square soft jrpgs in general. The magic that flowed through that system was intoxicating and then the ps2 got plenty of that magic as well.

I began with VII and still loving it ; i played also VIII , IX , X , XII and tried to play X-2 , XIII and XV but didn't like them in the slightest. Final Fantasy 7 remake is a great game but the original VII is by far my most loved one.

I still get chills when I walk through Balaamb Garden and Fishermans horizon, the scores and graphic design are artistic perfection. Its not everyone's cup of tea but you might miss out on your favourite game of all time if you skip FF8.

@@ff3player no. You need to mug Elastoids for Laser Cannons inside Lunatic Pandora when you’re in the second dream world sequence and refine them into pulse ammo. Adamantoises drops adamantine, and T-Rexes drop Dragon Fangs. Nothing of this require any triple triad grinding. You need a high level and a bit of patience but it is easily obtainable before Galbadia Garden on disc 1.

Last week I finished the pixel remaster of ff3. I liked it so much that I started playing the original on an NES emulator, I just got the Eureka jobs (Ninja and Sage) Only the final dungeon (Crystal Tower and World of Darkness) and The Cloud Of Darkness are left for me to beat. This entry really surprised me. I never expected to like it so much. Now it's on my top 3 (with FF5 as the second place and FF6 as the first) There's something special that FF3 has that the others don't, I don't know how to explain it. FF3 is amazing. When I finished the NES version I will be on to the 3D remake.

6 and 7 are my two top favorites; with 6 at number 1 as well. I played some Final Fantasy games on the Gameboy, but this was my first on any console. It's also my favorite for other reasons; one was how the story continues throughout the end credits. Another was in the thief's story. I renamed mine River; after the late actor River Phoenix, so when the Thief gets the Esper Phoenix, the game reads RIVER receives PHOENIX. That's a moment you could not have seen coming.

The music in FFX was vastly underrated imo. That opening theme is so calming as Tidus opens up "..this may be our last chance." Only to then realize later on that scene is the last peaceful moment before heading to Zanarkand and the tension amongst the party knowing that Yuna needed to sacrifice herself for her final summoning aeon. Ugh. Chills, bro.

FF9 has always been rated as the best FF alongside FF6 amongst most FF fans, but more mainstream reviewers such as Mojo have neglected its greatness in its previous videos. I still remember it was placed even lower than X in their last video. I'm glad that they have righted this wrong though. FF9 is my favourite game, and I also think it's the best, but I will have no arguments with anyone who thinks FF6 deserves the #1 spot.

A lot are saying that X & X2 is a chick game. But it really hits deep. Personally, I teared up when Seymour's story was revealed, he was still an ass, but my hatred for him became softer. It has a touch of reality and psychology. Plus the soundtrack set will forever be my fave. You slow down Yuna's theme, it becomes Yuna's ballad that is so heartfelt. I liked the idea of "Sin", Yu Yevon and Dream Zanarkand. It's unique. The plot was really thought well.

VIII has the best soundtrack hands down. The Man with a Machinegun is just top tier, with one of the best opening game sequence of all time and its soundtrack Liberi Fatali. Coming close in second would be X, To Zanarkand, Otherworld.

I'll also chime in and say not everyone. 7 > 10 > 6 > rest. I was pretty disappointed with 9 when I played it at release. Everything up through Disc 1 was great, same as with 8, but then went downhill for me. I think I might appreciate both it and 8 with a replay, but I've neve replayed either.

@@nightstrider15 My favourite game is 9, and while I played 6 back in the day, I never completed it. In fact, I think I only played the first 2 hours or so. I've just recently finished 6 like 2 days ago, and it really IS that good. The story is amazing, sure the beginning was a little slow but gradually becomes one hell of an epic emotional roller-coaster as the game progresses. It really does become a masterpiece by the end of it. I'm also one of those who shits on 7, because it really is just another average JRPG to me and I find it baffling that so many people call it the best game of all time. It also sickens me that 7 gets all the extra content and sequel while every other entry gets ignored. I get angry when someone says 7 is better than my favourite game 9, but I can't really say that I do if someone says 6 is better, because 6 actually is a great game just like 9 is and 7 isn't.

@@nightstrider15 I've seen many lists that put 6 all the way down at 5th even, or if not just listing Final Fantasy games but RPGs in general, not even have it in their top 10. FF7 was well done for what it was, and when you include its spin-offs, it moved the franchise from moderate success to a massively marketable enterprise. I do think FF7 deserves a place in the top five, but I would at least put it lower than FF6, because so much of what made FF7 work... had been done in FF6 and earlier games at the trope level. It did, however, have its own sense of style (as most games FF6 and later did), and the cutscenes, such as they were with the limited technology at the time, were very striking. If compared to everything the company put out (as a combined entity or its separate parts), I would, of course, put Chrono Trigger higher than either, but FF6 and FF7 would still be in the top 5 for RPGs that they ever put out. I don't think it is nostalgia so much as a recognition of what came before. I played FF7 before I played FF6, and I still love FF6 more for what it managed to do, and could see elements that FF6 took from it, because FF7 came later, despite the order I played them. FF6 took the franchise in new directions with the storytelling and characters specifically that wasn't done often, and certainly not as successfully, until after FF6 was overshadowed by the financial success of FF7. Both have their issues, but I would still say both are masterpieces with taking a grain of salt for the technical and financial limitations of the time. Chrono Trigger is its own separate thing in comparison, due to how it all blended together and feels more timeless as a result, but it too has a few flaws here and there, and Chrono Cross had even more. All four of those games deserve to be in the all-time RPG top 20, as well as many others in the FF franchise having a solid go depending on whether they count only English-release games or those that required patches or were never translated. I personally love Secret of Evermore, but it is on so few people's lists, for assorted reasons, despite being a polished game with great graphics, story, sound, and mechanics. Not everything has to be a masterpiece or thrown into the dung heap, but it is important to recognize that the best of the best may still owe its own success to earlier games which didn't do as well financially, but may have fewer flaws. To me, that's what puts FF6 higher. It achieved much of what FF7 did earlier, had even more memorable events, deeper story and characters, and just happened to get overshadowed with the next release. If they ever made a FF6 remaster that put it into proper 3D and expanded it ala FF7:Remake (whether fixing some of the minor flaws or not), I'm sure it would be extremely well received even by those who never played it, because many of its core elements are much more relatable in a broad sense, than things which happen in FF7. In a vague sense, FF6 is the older sibling who ended up in the news for one success before the internet became massive, and FF7 ended up in the news when it was starting to become huge, allowing for so much fan art and fan fiction, reviews and critiques, and so much more sharing what the game is about in an easier manner, by those who had never played the earlier games. It owes its wild success to more interconnectivity between its fans and those they could convince to either play the game, or enjoy what fan works were made. This, in turn, led to spinoffs, which only further fueled the fandom with more official content to expand even further with the fandom's take on them. FF6 has its original game, a few characters in Dissidia, and then the fan content. There is just far less that has been around to draw in new fans, and the console itself is older while FF7 now has the Remake to draw in even more new fans. Hopefully one day FF6 will get more than just a high placement on lists from old fans, so that newcomers can see why the old fans place it so high. Yes, it ended up on the Wii virtual console and on the Super NES Classic Edition, but with the Wii Virtual Console closed and the SNES Classic Edition being so limited in release... it still doesn't have a tenth of the exposure FF7 Remake has.

I recently played FFX for the first time and I thought that scene was really good! I went into FFX knowing about that infamous scene from the internet that has been memed and ridiculed to death so I expected the worst. I expected The Room levels of cringe but to my surprise that scene actually works and that people only nitpicked certain part of it to make it look cringier than it actually is.

3 is definitely true the scene is horribly oit of context However you're wrong on 2. Originally it was supposedly to be Fighting Fantasy but the name was taken so they needed another F. They went with Final because it would have been their last game had it not succeeded. Both Uematsu and Sakaguchi have conformed this as having been near constant conversation at the time. Sakaguchi was keen to having it named FF and settled on Final after his first choice was taken for exactly the reason you attribute to legend. Just because it wasn't the first choice doesn't mean that they didn't chose Final for a reason. It could have been Frontier Fantasy or Fantastic Fantasy but they went with final. Far from debunked just more complicated than the simple narrative but they've been clear especially Uematsu that the reason the went with final was the standard reason given.

XIII wasn't that bad, while flawed it did some things great and better than other entries in the series mainly with it's deeper combat, difficulty, lore, customization/equipment system all of which XV was really bad at. The cast of XIII wasn't so bad either outside Snow and Vanille but the entire cast has some of the best character development and chemistry in the series, No doubt FFXIII is like VIII a flawed but good game that was hit and or miss. If I was to rank the games I would say... 1.FF6 2.FF10 3.FF7 4.FF9 5.FF4 6.FF12 7.FF5 8.FF8 9.FF13 10.FF15 11.FF3 12.FF1 13.FF2

It also has one of the best stories in the series with well developed characters and arcs, although i have to admit I like it more now than I did before. As long as they don't make it a dopey action rpg I'd love it. Take the 3d style of say.. DQ11 and I'd pay $100 easy. Games like FF6 all i really want is a new coat of paint. Don't mess with the systems, maybe tweak the story to add more dialog and flesh out a few things for fun (like they did in 7remake) but leave the story and everything alone.

In your previous Final Fantasy ranking, you placed IX below both VII and X, because those 2 games were more popular. I always found it baffling how you guys would snub IX in every Final Fantasy or JRPG video that you've made. However, now I can praise you for putting IX in a more deserved position this time around. I can have no arguments with VI being #1 even though I still prefer IX personally. I do disagree with your placement of V. I would've ranked it above both III and IV. The reason XIII manage to get 2 sequels is due to square nearing bankruptcy due to the failure of FFXIV 1.0. XIII was able to kept them afloat and milked it just enough for them to be back on track.

They needed to make money quick, thankfully the sequels were cheap to develop because they could easily be considered flops with 13-2 doing half the sales of 13 and LR half the sales of 13-2. I actually do like 13 a lot, my point is just that they didn't make sequels because it was good.

@@tsunaxsawada10 While I did enjoy 13 a lot, I had the same feeling as you when it came to the sequels and it never really changed afterwards, 13-2 felt too different from 13 for me, I didn't really care for Serah as a main character, for the whole time travelling thing and for the fact that they basically had to rewrite the ending of 13 for 13-2's story to make sense, the gameplay was fun though. LR made the story even more convoluted and looked super cheap and downright ugly in some parts, which was a shame seeing as the original 13 was a gorgeous game, and I wasn't a fan of the countdown thing, so I also didn't care much for that one.

Final Fantasy XIV is the absolute best FF in the franchise. Not only it has a beautiful story (the Shadowbringers expansion is by far my most favorite of the series), the main character is you. You are the one that’s living that story. That’s what makes the game the best of the franchise.

The whole myth that Final Fantasy was named that because it was Square's last roll of the dice is... Just that. A myth. It was just called Final Fantasy because the director (can't rmember who now...) liked the alliteration. Square was far from the behemoth it is now, but they'd already had success with Rad Racer and 3-D Worldrunner on NES and the original FF could've been a flop and still wouldn't have sunk the company (though I'm sure it wouldn't be the empire it is today without FF's success.) One of the great myths in video game history that, as this video proves, is still going strong today despite a moderate googling debunking it. VI(III in its confused original US nomenclature) and VII are the best, BTW. IX would probably be a fairly close third but there's no way it beats VII, and both the latter and VI are amongst the greatest games ever made.

Gameplay wise, this game, in my opinion, was the best out of the first six games, since the games difficulty is not as easy to cheese as in VI, and sometimes it was even really fun to exploit even the hardest of bosses through creative means

I agree with you. Well said. I definitely enjoyed playing FF5. For me it has a well-balanced gameplay, if not a bit too difficult. And that’s what I want in an FF game. A truly challenging game. Some areas have enemies that are surprisingly too strong but not impossible to beat. Maybe it’s different in other versions. I played the SNES version, fan-translated. But I definitely enjoyed this game way more than FF6. I wasn’t impressed with 6 gameplay-wise. I felt like things just passed. It may have a nice story but I felt more immersed into FF5’s world. Its story and characters were actually great.

I was preparing to write a long comment about this list be a failure of VI wasn’t at the top. Glad y’all got this right! Also, the footage at the start that’s labeled as IV is actually from V. And finally, I understand why they are where they are, but personally I would have put I and II higher-but I have a lot of personal feelings and memories attached! (Hot take: I actually enjoyed abusing the leveling system in II).
