The Karnataka Cabinet has approved legislation that will enable quotas for locals in the private sector in different roles and capacities, triggering a huge row in a city known as the Silicon Valley of India.
The move may also be illegal and unconstitutional. Previous attempts at such quotas in other states have been stopped by the Supreme Court. Late Wednesday evening, the government announced a halt to the proposed legislaton for the time being

I, am a citizen of Bangalore who has become it's inhabitant it for a long time. More than any other city of India. I constantly face situations in which the kannada speaking 'locals' always ask me - where I come from. I am a Gujarati who grew up in cosmopolitan Calcutta and who never saw Gujarat till I was in high school. Moved to Bangalore more than 45 years ago as my family shifted business here. The reality of India today is about this khichdi culture, migratory and work patterns and the fun of its flavors. Some of us grasp the language, some take a long time, some never get it. What is important is how we connect with these inevitable changes...and LOOK AFTER our varied city spaces including the disappearing green belts. While Bangalore is growing tall and spreading wide, the everyday streets, foot paths, dug up roads, pot holes...not to forget the garbage strewn across, neglected...constant violation of traffic regulations, noise pollution are getting disastrous. Rare persons seem to care and speak about these issues. We strangely seem to accept these as a norm; part of development! I think what truly makes me belong to a city is the way I take care, raise concerns, speak up. It is certainly not merely about speaking a language fluently. Having said that, I also am someone who appreciates the local food, varied dialects indigenous cultures. But let us not make it hard for those who have become its residents for some generations now. Bangalore seems to have opened its flood gates to students long ago. For students for admissions in engineering and medical colleges. For IT sector opportunities galore. And now it's too late to feel so threatened. Maybe we need to build greater communication, public awareness and empathy in such matters?

The socio-economic angle to this whole language debate just did not come up at all.... Language Chauvinism, people who back it, the crowd that is impressed with promises of reservation for locals all has a link to socio-economic status of a person. Karnataka has already done this with the IT companies. Till other states don't do the same, there will always be a shortage of jobs in Karnataka. The population of UP is 25 crore and the population of Karnataka is 7 crore. Why can't Lukhnow or Kanpur become like Karnataka? Why is that not the subject of debates. Why are locals not asking for that from their government instead of bulldozing houses and destroying poor people's small businesses. I live in Gurgaon and most companies here have majority people from UP and even management is quietly propagating casteist culture here. Why are there no protests in UP for education and jobs, why only commun al fights?

With my experience, I can say that not only UP , Bihar , RJ people speak in hindi but people from Odisha , bengal , north east and Maharashtra also speak in Hindi in non Hindi state so don't blame north India. The real reason behind the rising negative sentiments against immigrants is actually against their lack of demands from their local governments. Not even once in this debate did anyone ask the question "What is the BJP government doing in UP to attract companies there?". UP had a population of 25 crore. What has anyone there done to create jobs locally for 25 crore people there. How many people from Karnataka, Haryana and Maharashtra work in UP. What is Ajay Bisht doing there to make sure those who were born there and speak the local language find employment in their home state. I have not seen people from Bangalore either learn Marathi while being in Mumbai or Gujarati while being in Gujarat.
