Manekaji Is a dignified politician who is different from the other Gandhi members like Sonia or Rahul in that she never speaks ill of the other opposition and she has won consistently because of her connect to ground realities in her constituency. BJP will surely miss her presence in parliament and she is one of the few sane politicians whose action speak louder than words. Varun is also a dignified politician and a chip of the old block. I hope the election result will temper many of the BJP politicians and will make them understand that one should never take the voter for granted.

In the early 1980s, Maneka Gandhi was a member of Janta party. Vidya Sagar was president Janta party, District Patiala. I was Deputy Commissioner, Patiala in the early 1980s. Because of communal riots in Patiala, I had imposed curfew in the gated city. Vidya Sagar's son, Ashwini Kumar appeared in the balcony of his house. The Police shot him dead. Maneka Gandhi visited Patiala. She wanted to address the public outside Sheranwala gate. I spoke to the Home Secretary, Amrik Singh Pooni whether she should be allowed to address the public because of imposition of Section 144 Cr. P.C. He told me that she should not be allowed to address the public. As she got out of the Circuit House, she was arrested and was sent to the Sadr Police Station on Nabha Road. She was sent back at midnight towards Delhi. I have narrated this incident in detail in my autobiography.
