Munawar Faruqui | Prison, Comedy & Self-Censorship | Barkha Dutt

Munawar Faruqui was arrested by Indore Police for a joke for which the Police later said they had no evidence. Munawar's performance was disrupted by son of a BJP MLA Abhimany Gaur at a Cafe in Indore. Gaur claimed he heard Munawar practice a joke on Hindu deities and he was going to crack the same joke. Faruqui later moved to Madhya Pradesh High Court to seek bail, but was denied the bail. Following this, Justice Nariman of the Supreme Court granted Faruqui bail saying that the evidence in the case was "vague". In this conversation, Barkha Dutt speaks to Munawar Faruqui on comedy and censorship.

I remember, when he was in jail and I use to share my opinion on social media platforms and used #releasemunawar often, I faced criticism. I faced abusive language from my people whom I considered friends. I used to comment on his fan pages, and some random individuals used to comment hatred in my name, some reported my account, I never replied to them. They all felt irrelevant. I am so happy and really proud to see an artist happy again, trying to figure out life again and blessed to see him again. Alhumdulilah ❤️
