I have to say how refreshing it has been to follow someone as passionate as Dave at Mokuhankan for the last few years. Speaking as someone who grew disillusioned with a career in art, Dave's knowledge and the fire of his love for Japanese woodblock prints is just inspiring. So glad 2024 was a huge year for the shop.

Ah yes, disillustionment in the biz of art, I know it well. Loved designing, carving, printing woodblocks, not so much the grind of sales or locked into "what sells" rather than freedom to explore own artistic path. Dave is truly an inspiration for a return to this work I love, without making it a business.

Thanks for the update Dave. We had the pleasure of a brief chat (I felt so guilty interrupting you) back in April and we came away with three prints that are now framed and hanging in our home, one of which (Sparrow and Peony) became very special to us in particular as a few weeks after returning from Japan we found out my wifes mother had terminal cancer and a few weeks later she passed, she was a keen bird watcher and lover of nature and really liked the print when we showed it to her. Hearing about your own journey as well through that and thankfully a happier ending for yourself at least confirms that there is right in the world, and you deserve many more years of it. Thank you to yourself and all the staff at Mokuhankan!

I got to meet Dave in October of this year. Super nice guy. He took time out of his lunch break to play puzzles with my kids while my wife and I browsed the selection of prints. Afterwards he posed for pictures and answered all my questions. Again, incredibly nice and accommodating person. Can’t wait to go back.

Dave, none of this could have happened without your deep love and passion for wood block prints. We support you because we all want to be a part of the passion, to know we can own some small piece which was developed with such care, love, and thought. I hope you have a great 2025 and look forward to perching over your shoulder via twitch and youtube as you continue to show us how beautiful care, attention, and dedication can make the humble piece of paper.

I'm going to be visiting Tokyo on my own in June 2025 and at the very top of my list is visiting Mokuhankan. I've been an avid follower of your KZbin content for a little while now and I'm not ashamed to say that your business and videos are a big reason why I decided to visit Tokyo. I'm learning Japanese and very much looking forward to immersing myself in the culture and experiences that Japan has to offer. Thank you for everything you do - for us and for your team.

It's so satisfying to see all the success you and your team have earned. I started following you around 2017, around the time when you made your post first asking for Patreon revenue... It's absolutely insane to see where things have got to. Happy new year, Mokuhankan!

Well, there is always a price for success. But one of the best things about youtube are all the creators who end up hiring help as their channel grows, spreading the wealth around. Helping this young paper maker is a nod to the future of print making. Congratulations on your success and the great fun it has been learning how print making works.

I spent two weeks in Japan traveling and hiking in September. Tokyo, Fuji-san, Nagano, Kyoto and even made it to Fukui/Echizen. In fact, today I’m going to pick up the print I purchased in Asakusa. I had it professionally framed so I could display it. Also, going soon to the Art Institute of Chicago to view their amazing collection. Absolutely loved my time in Japan and looking forward to returning in ‘25. Thank you Dave for sharing your knowledge and experience ! 加油!!

I feel the public has not been sufficiently warned about the dangers of watching David Bull's channel. I used to think I was safe. I've been watching since the first ukiyo-e heroes days, and never felt any interest in buying anything. "Sure," I though, "it's all very wonderful, the prints look very nice, it's great that Dave is keeping the craft alive, it's good that people are willing to pay for it, but me, buying any of it? Why would I want to? Looking at it through my monitor is more than good enough for me." Years passed. One night I had a dream that I was opening a package from Dave filled with prints and I was feeling intensely happy. I woke up. The first thing I felt was disappointment that the prints were a dream, the package wasn't coming. Then I immediately crawled to my computer, googled "Mokuhankan" and started ordering. I'm now $1500 poorer. Also, covered in prints. Think not yourself safe! I thought I was, and yet... You never know when you break. Stay safe.

It would be interesting to hear why you didn't raise prices as you are clearly not at equilibrium and also yen is 50% weaker
@seseragistudio5 сағат бұрын
Because most of our customers are overseas, paying us in $ £ and €, and given that the yen has become weaker and weaker recently, this gives us an automatic increase (at this end), without changing the price at the customer end. A fairly large percent of that 'growth' in the charts is due to this weakening of the yen, not an actual increase in the number of prints being shipped.
