Guys, at 0:30 I say "moles solute per liter of solvent", but it's per liter of solution! What a dumb mistake on my part, but it's an important definition to get right so please take note.

1:21 does that mean that even after adding more solvent volume of solute remains constant?
@gabriels23954 жыл бұрын
I would say YES. Because the volume of solute only increases by adding more solute. Now it is the CONCENTRATION of that solute the one that changes if the volume of solvent is altered. This because the concentration is a "ratio" between the solute AND the solvent.

Can someone explain the intuition behind why dilution can be represented with the M1*V1 = M2*V2 equation? I don't want to just blindly use the formula - would like to know why it works. Is there a way to do these dilution problems with dimensional analysis?
@ProfessorDaveExplains5 жыл бұрын
well concentration and volume are inversely proportional, if you double the volume of solvent, the concentration will necessarily be cut in half

Hi just gonna ask if you are converting mL to Liters you should divide it by 1000 right? should it be 0.2L or 0.200L? the answer will be different but only in decimal places.
@ProfessorDaveExplains3 жыл бұрын
yep that's right. number of decimal places will depend on the number of sig figs present.

First of all, thanks for the great videos. I just have a quick question. Are you supposed to add the mass of the solute to the solvent to get the total mass of the solution? I don't know this for certain, and want to make sure I am doing the right calculations. Thanks in advance. *Edit* Mean't volume, not mass.
@ProfessorDaveExplains7 жыл бұрын
well here mass doesn't come into play, as molarity is moles solute per liter solution. but there could be other applications where mass is relevant.
@1NikkiPink17 жыл бұрын
So the volume of the solution is the same with or without the solute inside? That's what I meant.
@1NikkiPink17 жыл бұрын
I confused mass and volume. Sorry.
@ProfessorDaveExplains7 жыл бұрын
oh, yes! i know it seems weird but solute will fit into the spots between the solvent particles and won't impact the overall volume, so if adding a solid solute, we don't have to factor that into the total volume. of course if combining liquids, we do add the volumes.
