Remember the previous two tarantulas that had a mold outbreak? Out of all the other Ts, mold now decides to attack my OBT! With that, in this video we will be cleaning out the OBT's enclosure and rehousing her into a Critter Keeper with more ventilation, in hopes that it will combat future mold problems. Right, a few things that would probably help: 1. get a dehumidifier for the room, as it's obviously too moist right now and is inhibiting the explosive growth of this mould. 2. put less water in the Ts tanks, and clean/change it more frequently to be sure that it isn't the biggest cause. 3. ALWAYS CLEAN MOLDY ITEMS OUTDOORS (or at least in the emptiest room you have) 4. Stop putting the spore-covered items from the tanks BACK into the tanks once you've put in new substrate. Just replace them. 5. Try changing up your substrate type/ratio, it could be as simple as that (had a friend with a similar problem in his 1 tank, and this seemed to fix it for him--but each case is different). 6. Get tanks (or at the very least lids) that are better ventilated, the wood just absorbs moisture and it winds up staying close to the 'ground' of the tank, helping to foster mould. 7. Be more careful when putting water into the tanks, as you tend to spill quite a bit and this creates small pockets of damp earth, which is a great breeding ground for mould (notice how a lot of times the mould will be clustered at the BOTTOM of the water dishes, where the most moisture from spillage can be found). 8. Please put that moult, which you pulled from the MOLDY cage, into an air-tight container--it is, no doubt, covered in spores. Maybe ask Ants-Canada about the mould issue, as I know he's made many terrariums/paludariums/bio-spheres with differing water/soil concentrates and may have encountered this problem while trying to figure out just the right mixtures.

That's really well put. AC had a mold problem at one stage. The room/tanks could probably do with a wipe with something to kill spores. For a crawly friendly option, a couple of drops of tea tree oil in warm water. ( I'm not being all hippy; years ago when I studied book restoration a friend did her thesis on non chemical solutions to mold infestations in organic materials and found it really effective.)

Stop cleaning the tanks inside. When you disrupt the mold, its spores release into the air. You need to clean them outside, replace the wood with a well ventilated lid, and cut down on the amount of water you put in the Ts’ tanks. Tarantulas only need a very shallow water dish, as they get most of their hydration from their prey. If the problem persists, get a dehumidifier for the T rooms. If even that doesn’t help, you may want to get your house tested as you may have a mold infestation, which is also hazard to your health.

If you want to stop this mould spreading to more enclosures you need to do things differently. DO NOT disturb an enclosure with mould in it in the spider room because you're just spreading spores around. Take the mouldy enclosure outside or into another room with no spiders in it and remove the spider and clean the enclosure there. By digging around in mouldy substrate you're sending millions of microscopically small spores into the air. They will settle on literally everything else in the room and it only takes a single spore to start a new mould outbreak on or in something else. edit to add - that piece of wood that was in the OBT enclosure, just get rid of it. you might be able to clean it, the best way would probably be to clean it as well as you can and then bake it in the oven for couple of hours but mould spores can be super resilient and if the mould is in the wood as opposed to just on the surface its probably there to stay. personally I dont think its worth the risk just for a bit of wood you could easily replace

I would also advise to use an organic forest soil/clay soil mix while also adding white springtails and woodlice. They are mold killers and even in very moist enclosures like dolichothele bolivianum - i had zero mold

I had arachnophobia but after adopting a tarantula and falling in love with the hobby I've come to realize spiders are pretty harmless. Even black widows- who haven't killed anyone in over a decade, eject very little venom and are almost unable to kill an adult human. Most spiders are too small to penetrate your skin, and even then they won't bite you just because they are on you. I went from freaking out to just half-paying-attention brushing them off of me while at the PC. They live happily in my house and leave me alone.

Ok so as a mold removing specialist. Yes, the spores are active in the environment and are sreading to every wet spot they find. Start with all new fresh media and invest in some humidity control (like dessicant packs from the hardware store near your tanks).

You could get a mold testing kit or hire someone to test your house, the room at least for mold if you think you have a mold problem there. However I wonder if it possibly still a ventilation and/or a humidity issue. Purchase a hygrometer and place in the T's room to see if it too humid in there. Maybe even placing a dehumidifiers (especially in humid climates) might keep room optimal and stop or reduce mold outbreaks in the enclosure. Small fan in the room too should keep the air moving and help with the ventilation in the room as well.

Always nice to see Miss Lord have Mercy. Being a brit we don't really see too many exotics... My mom in particular is arachnaphobic and I think that gave me a feeling of not wanting to be near spiders. Thanks to all your videos, I came across a british house spider at work today... and surprisingly, felt no fear but a mild curiosity. I still don't want to handle spiders directly, but I had no problem snatching up a catch cup and a bit of paper, scaring a few co-workers on the way out to release it XD Thank you for having this channel.

Mold is ubiquitous in the environment, so yes, the room is filled with mold. Everyone's rooms are filled with mold. I highly recommend avoiding wooden covers of any kind and using plastic. Even treated wood is a perfect substrate for mold growth if there is any significant moisture. Plus, treated wood can off gas some nasty chemicals that may affect the health of your T. You cannot "disenfect" wood, even with bleach. Consider speaking with a veterinarian with a subspecialty in exotic animals.

The glass tanks are the issue I think, because you only get ventilation from the top, you need cross ventilation. The critter keepers are good because you can just drill a heap of cross vent holes in each side, and that I think will solve a lot of the issues even with the open top of the critter keeper, you still aren't getting cross ventilation. Also test each individual tarantula when you rehouse, just wet down one corner of the substrate and see if the spider goes to it or avoids it. If it avoids the moisture then it will be happier in a dryer set up, if it likes the water then just use less moisture more often instead of more moisture less often. I have seen good comments below about cleaning the enclosures outside to avoid spreading the mould, and putting the wood features in the oven for a while to kill all mould spores and possible mites etc. I like the channel, thanks for the content. You have an amazing group of incredible creatures, I absolutely love the Haplopelma Minax (Thailand Black) she is amazing.

Here’s some advice! 1. Always wear gloves when handling mold 2. Handle mold outside of your house 3. Get a dehumidifier (if too moist) 4. Add less water to bowls 5. Get rid of the wood plates 6. ⬆️Get better ventilated plates 7. Boil the wood blocks and let it cool 8. Test your house for mold 9. Don’t spray as much water 10. Get different substrate - Hope this helps!

I am so afraid of spiders and always have been. I came across one of these videos and I can't stop watching and I have a new appreciation for spiders and tarantulas. Thank you for the amazing videos keep it up!
