Watch the silicone mold making process of a corbel for an architectural restoration project in Brooklyn NY. An existing corbel is scanned and 3D printed. The printed piece is molded using Rebound 25 silicone and Plasti-Paste II resin. After the mold cures, the model is demolded and sandstone is cast into the mold, making a perfect duplicate of the model.

Wow, these guys really dropped the ball on this, they went to all the trouble and expense to make rubber registration keys and a $350 plasti-paste mold and then they had to embed it into a box full of sand etc etc when they could easily have made this mother mold out of molding plaster like I do, and it's quick, cheap and easily supports concrete in the mold. They could have made this mold with about 5 pieces, no sand box, no sand, no having to turn the heavy thing over after screwing plywood on, undoing it all etc. The weight of the sand no doubt will distort the plasti-paste shell at least a small amount on something this large. I don't need to add registration keys to the rubber with the plaster mother mold method.

I need to ask the question ,,,, would it not have been easier and way cheaper to 3D print these corbels instead of molding them ? or was it a conservation requirement ???

These needed to be actual sandstone, as per the restoration requirements.

That was my thought finally. I know that despite in america many buildings being left to rot and fall down or are demolished ( even historic house ) those that do get restored are covered by a certain number of rules and régulations. I do get annoyed when I see American billionaires giving money to restore French ( I live in France ) houses when so many of your own buildings need repair jsut as much if not more !! great job, fascinating to Watch.

@@TheFiown We restored each stone on the front of the building out of respect. That is why we chose to vary the colors just like the original stones. We used new stones from the original quarry under the large front windows but that quarry had again shut down before we began the facade restoration. We also took the cornice back to bare wood and replaced all the missing elements. Our colors had to be approved by NYC Landmarks Commission but because we got them approved, they can now be used by anyone on a historic NYC building.

This project used a bit less than 2 gallon units of Rebound 25 and 4 gallon units of Plasti-Paste. Thanks for watching!

How many 5 gallon pails of material did this project take?, what was the cost of the total project in material alone?

We didn't really have unlimited funds as we bought the building in '95 when they were still stripping cars on this Boerum Hill Historic District street. Sadly, even the millionaires now moving into the neighborhood seem to spend their money adding suburban-sized kitchens rather than honoring and protecting the original facade stones for future generations.

What procedure you need to prepare the 3D printed piece before brushing on the silicone?

In this case only a release agent was applied but some customers smooth their models with XTC-3D epoxy.

@@smoothon We also used auto body filler to refine the 3D print before we created the molds. Our team consisted of a master plasterer, a master mason and a master carpenter but we had never done anything like this before.

Those original corbels don't look like wood to me, they look like and would have typically been SANDSTONE on a building like that one.

The original corbels were indeed carved brownstone from a giant quarry in Portland, Connecticut that is no longer in operation.
