Guide dog name reveal dropped on Patreon yesterday! patreon.com/mollyburke if you just can't wait! :D Also, for clarity... when the guide dog trainers ask us to not compare out new dog to our old ones, they mean negatively. Finding the positive ways in which your new dog is like your previous guides is a really great thing to do because it can help you bond faster and feel more connected and open to them. When I ask you not to compare my new guide dog my previous two, it's the same thing. I'm asking you not to say you like one better than the other, one is cuter looking than the other, etc. but seeing the wonderful ways in which they are similar is encouraged! :)

Very accurate description of how it usually works if you don't get prematched. My service dog also chose me and it's honestly the same for all service dog handlers I know that didn't get a prematch. A friend at first didn't want her dog at all, as she set her heart on another, but the dog chose her and there was no way the dog would work for someone else. Now they're an amazing team with an incredibly strong bond and she often says how lucky she was that her dog did not let go.

Yes, service dogs can be very helpful. But do realise that they are also a dog. They need all the dog things a normal dog does + extra training (even if you get a pre trained one). They require time and energy. And they are always by your side, in times you really need their help, but also in times when you need them less and having a dog with you is a bit more inconvenient (space constraints, less accessible areas, discrimination etc). Just something I think every service dog owner should be aware of before they decide to take a service dog. Because it is overlooked sometimes. Best of luck with whatever choice you make!
@GemzaStar093 жыл бұрын
@@laartje24 I agree in the UK they are called Assistance dogs. I have an assistance dog in training and it really is a lot of work, even more so if you owner-train them. My dog also has a trainer that he sees, this costs me £45/hour, that's $61/hour, that price is actually classified as cheap as most other trainers cost between £60-80 an hour. Not only do you have to train your dog but also train yourself, especially with guide and mobility tasks there are specific ways in how to work with your dog so that you don't cause harm to your dog. I have to train him every day and keep up to date with where he is at with each individual task and have to note down any issues that come up and focus on them. The training required to pass a public access test is actually quite a lot and takes a lot of time if you owner train. Not to mention you have to pay for vet bills (Jabs and annual checks included, especially if they are doing guide/mobility work to check that their joints are doing well), Food also can cost quite a lot, especially for a larger dog (the larger the dog the more food the dog needs) and mobility and guide tasks usually require larger dogs. I currently spend £39/month which is $53/month on food alone. On top of all this they are dogs after all, they need daily walks in order to burn off all that energy, especially for high energy working breeds, if you can't do that yourself then you have the added costs of dog walkers, my local dog walkers charge around £10/hour which is $13/hour. they also need play time and relax time / off duty time. If you don't have the time and the money then it can become a nightmare and you'll end up with an average pet dog instead of an assistance/service dog. Note: I also agree, you will get challenged when entering buildings on a regular basis, you will get people look at you and ask you questions on a daily basis, you will also have a lot of attention drawn to you even if you don't want that attention. Not to mention how many children will run up to you and will want to pet your dog. Because of these factors quite often doctors in the UK will not recommend an assistance/service dog to you. I myself brought up the idea to my therapist whom agreed that it would help me due to my circumstances, but my doctor refused to give a note for it and referred me to more therapy sessions instead.

I think sometimes a contrasting personality works best. Like Molly said she's very uptight and that's why she needs a chill dog, but someone who was down or had low energy might work best with a really enthusiastic dog because that enthusiasm can be catching.

I was very spoiled when matched with my first service dog at 18. I can confidently say that he picked me. All the trainers and the rest of the people in my class saw it. I've had pet dogs all my life, but this was something else. He worked with others in the class and I worked with other dogs, but anytime we were together it felt perfect. I can remember doing laps around the training room and any time we passed a trainer, he would hug a bit closer to my side and look at them like "I got this. We're good". He also had this quirk about him that happened from day one. When he was in a down under the table during dinner or lecture, he'd paw at me until I held his hand. He did it all 12 years I had him, all through HS and college. He couldn't relax under the desk unless he knew where I was. If I got up while he was dozing to present in front of the class, he'd wake up and march to the front to lay at my feet. He had such a wise old soul. I don't think I'll ever have another dog like him. My current SD is the opposite. Very chill boy, but is young at heart. Both are wonderful in their own right. The bond of an SD team is like nothing else. Somehow this intelligent, furry creature becomes an extension of yourself in a way that's hard to describe.

Glad you found a better match! As a service dog user myself: dominance theory is actually pretty outdated and has been debunked. There's no inherent drawbacks to letting a service or guide dog sleep on the 'same level' as you except for personal preference and logistics. They aren't going to start seeing you as inferior or anything. Plus, dogs are very smart and capable of learning context. This means they can learn when it is okay to get on the furniture and when it is not allowed, such as when you are at home vs at a hotel. Skilled trainers can teach them contextual contingencies, like “you can only jump up on the bed to wake me up from a PTSD nightmare” or “you can sleep on the bed, but if you jump off you shouldn’t get back up unless invited to do so so you don’t interrupt my sleep”. It doesn’t have to be all or nothing, and training in absolutes this way undermines the intelligence of the dog. We owe it to them to teach them presuming competence.

13:50 Dominance theory has been looong debunked. 1. There's nothing wrong with not letting a dog on the furniture. You can choose to not allow your dog on your bed for more comfortable sleeping, or you might want to avoid having hair on the couch. Maybe you want your home to feel more comfortable for guests. Maybe it's just a preference, no specific reason. All perfectly valid. But to think that no furniture will somehow translate into exerting "dominance" or show that you're "on a different level" is just silly. 2. I understand this seems like an innoncent enough couple of sentences, but dominance theory is what leads people to use harmful methods, so please, for the sake of dogs, let's stop perpetuating this lie. 3. It can still be a good idea to not let the dog on the bed (initially or forever) in order to set boundaries. Especially when a dog is new to one's home it's important to create a set of "house rules" that make happy co-existing possible. Letting your dog in your bed is also completely fine. Again, not here to judge anything Molly or other dog owners do, I just hope we can FINALLY let that bs theory go. Can't post links, so if you're interested: - The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behaviour (AVSAB) has a Dominance Position Statement on their site, - The Association of Professional Dog Trainers (APDT) has a great article titled Dominance and Dog Training (edited typo, clarified sentence)

Can easily be fixed by having a request position, where the dog requests to get up with a paw up or similiar No need for dominance, but can help establish boundaries if you're going to other houses with furniture

thank you for saying that about the looks of a dog. I’m a trainer and see so many cases where someone got a breed because of the way they look and then cannot give them what they need. good for you for being able to look past that!

Agreed. Unfortainly Black dog syndrome is a phenomenon in which black dogs are passed over for adoption in favor of lighter-colored animals. Animal shelters often use the term BBD, (Big Black Dog)

I'm loving this series, and as a sighted person, it's been really informative as ive never thought about how much goes into the process of training these guide dogs and matching them with their owners. I can't wait to see if you end up with Gallop 2.0! it's funny in some ways he looks so similar, but you can notice his little unique differences too, like his fluffier tail, and his ears sit in a floppier position on the side of his head than Gallops do.

3:15 My service dog is more laid back, but he's a perfect example of what you're saying. When the harness is on, perfect angel (never makes a single mistake) and when the harness is off he's a regular dog who loves playing, giving kisses and barking at his toys. It really is a light switch

I expected you to go with Polly but I'm glad you and the trainers are considering your needs as well as where the dog would thrive. I also really liked how you brought up that what you want as far as looks/breed/gender is the bottom of the list of what matters as far as what you need and want in a guide dog.

If the dog is put in an environment where they aren't happy, they won't be a good guide dog. It's about finding the right match for the blind person, and for the dog!
@nyxredfern50423 жыл бұрын
@@MollyBurkeOfficial Question, if you don't mind, they must have known before you "trialed" her that Polly wasn't a city gal and wouldn't be a good fit based on environment. Given that, why did they bother having you try her out? Was it just to give you a range of dogs to test out or were they thinking that you guys may "click" so well it would be worth having Polly go outside her environmental comfort zone?

What you say about feeling it is so true! I started my process with my heart set on a collie or doodle, then settled on a lab when my mom found a litter of labs up for adoption since I knew they were great as service dogs too, then the shelter told us a special dog had come into the shelter the day before and introduced my mom and I to this seven pound pink creature named "Piglet", who burrowed into my arms whimpering, and I couldn't let go. I adopted him, breed unknown, after changing his name, because seriously, and hoped he would grow large enough to help me since he just felt RIGHT, and I HAD adopted him as a potential mobility support dog for the future. As my Louie has grown (and grown, and GROWN), things continue feeling right, even with puppy challenges, and while I've loved and felt safe with many dogs, I've never felt safer than with him, even with my Collie princess (who has sort of become canonized in family lore and memory). We're very early in the process, and I don't know for sure if he'll check out for final training, but I'm so hopeful that things will continue to fall into place for us because I just, like you said, FEEL like he's the dog who is supposed to help me as my condition progresses. I'm so eager to see how you and Galpsy (Gylop?) do in your early days or if he is even the one! Good luck!

It's so interesting how so many people want dogs that match their energy levels(probably more important for service dogs and their owners). As much as I loved my low energy dogs that matched my own low energy, I somehow ended up with a much stronger bond with my high energy dog. It's definitely not the same, though, bc my dogs have all been just pets with basic training lol 😄 I'm thankful Molly has shared this experience with us! And GIGI IS SO ADORABLE I LOVE HER 😍😍😍

OMG I had a MIRA dog!!!! I volunteered as a foster family for a black lab, I named her Nyssa, and I fostered her for that first year when I lived in Quebec City going to University there. I was devastated when her time with me was up, and she left permanently to stay and continue her training at the MIRA foundation. It never worked out though - the foundation called me about a month later, saying it wasn't working out and asked if I wanted to keep her. Ma belle Nyssa - I got her back and she remained my dog for the rest of her life. She passed away earlier this year. While she did not end up helping a blind person or an autistic child, she ended up in a way being my unofficial guide dog and she is dearly missed.

Hi Molly. I do understand the temptation to blame puppy raisers when a new dog exhibits less than appropriate behaviors, but coming from someone who is a Long time graduate of many years Who has also been a puppy raiser to six German Shepherd‘s for the Seeing Eye, I can tell you that when I was matched with the brother of the first puppy I raised the first thing he did was jump up on my bed. I know for a fact that his puppy raisers never allowed him on the bed. I have worked with all different kind of dogs for many years and I can tell you that they are always so full of surprises and certainly like to keep us guessing on what is coming up next. I always knew as a trainer that I would never be bored.

My God, when he jumped out of the car and then walked around it I about had a heart attack! I know he was in a controlled environment and he was safe but good lord... as a dog mom of a non-service dog it terrified me to imagine that happening in the middle of a busy city... and then thinking if that happening with a guide dog?? Your eyes??? So scary!!! In terms of non service dogs, it is absolutely adorable how he wants to be right next to you whether sleeping or in the car. To a total layman like me, it seems like that could be a little scary or problematic as a guide dog, but I also assume that's the sort of thing that training addresses in one on one work. Looking forward to seeing who you end up with! Regardless, all the dogs have been so cute and sweet

Being respite boarders for Guide Dogs (UK), we've definitely had more Micmacs than Gallop 2.0s staying with us through the years! The chillest we had was an early retiring boy called Spencer, who was the biggest, laziest black lab/golden retriever cross - he looked very much like Gallop, actually. When he was rehomed his new owners kept in touch - he has decided that one of their couches is now his rightful place on an almost permanent basis. A big part of the crazy energy thing we see is probably that when dogs are with us, they're not working, and all of that excess mental energy has to go somewhere. We definitely plan lots of brain games to keep their minds busy and avoid them making their own entertainment (which can get messy, lol). With most of them, we could literally walk them for miles, and they'd still be raring to go unless they have something to tax their brains, too. We've had a couple of extremely clever girls in particular who were/are amazing guides, but they certainly put us through our paces trying to keep them out of trouble!

I relate to this. I had to get my 1.5 year old Golden SDIT trough quarantine and since I live in the city that ment only long walks before dawn and after dusk, and only 2 public access trips for a year. Keeping her busy was a challenge and a half. Because training in the living room, puzzles, and free running only get you so far. It doesn't drain their energy like navigating the busy city streets does. I was terrified she would wash out, but it seems like she is pulling trough now that she is back in action, where she belongs.
