When the order comes down from either Congress or the president to confiscate firearms, then we'll see how many patriots are among us. Any law enforcement officer or member of the armed forces who participates in said confiscation will be in violation of their oath & a traitor.

Yes, Andrew, it will be a moment that in fact separates the boys from the men. Having pent 20 years in the U. S. Army, I would never accept a confiscation order, nor would I pass it on to anyone under my command. I have been retired for 25 years. I can only hope the young people in uniform today remember their oath!

I might add one thing about translating from the Greek. Though I never studied the Greek language, I studied Latin and Latin is known as an "inflected" language. More or less, that means the form of a word contains information about the context, tense, actor, et cetera. So the form of the word changes depending on these variables. As an example, in Latin there is an "imperative" case where the "you" - the person being commanded to do something - is understood by the shape of the word. So I guess I'm asking, even though only "two words," would "molon labe" be more accurately translated as "You come and take," with the object, their arms, being understood? Is Greek an inflected language?

I learned in Texas History in Elementary School that the Gonzales Cannon was blown up, probably by accident, during the conflict. Later, in College Texas History, we learned that the cannon was transported from Gonzales to San Antonio de Bexar and used during the siege at the Alamo. Supposedly it was buried at the Mission and may have been rediscovered during an archeological dig in 1936, but it was never authenticated.

As a greek i would say.. Sparta was by itself a different society with different values and mottos in life within Greece at that time. Translation in English of Molon Lave loses a lot of its beauty, sounds cheaper. Spartans tended to use the fewer words they could to give a very deeper meaning, it was some kind of motto. That's why there is a greek saying «το λακωνίζειν εστί φιλοσοφείν» which is again pretty difficult to translate. But the main meaning is: "to talk like spartan (with fewer words) it is philosophy". Spartan sayings are short and full of symbolizations that someone to understand should know much deeper info about their society. Another spartan example is that mothers would say to their sons when leaving for war "ἢ τὰν ἢ ἐπὶ τᾶς" actual translation is "or with it or on it" which means "that I will be waiting for you to come back with your shield (which means he will return alive with his shield and victorious because people that surrender give their weapons... their shield.. so it's also a call of no surrender) or dead. A spartan who died in the war they would carry his dead body back to Sparta ON HIS SHIELD so everyone could see that this man died honorable fighting for Sparta and not like a coward.

I am a professor of ancient Greek. The phrase ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ means exactly the following: The Spartans were lovers of philosophy, witty and sarcastic towards their enemies. So when Persis told him to hand over the weapons, Leonidas in an ironic tone said to him: "Since you are a passerby among us who are waiting for you, passing by here relieve us of the trouble and come and take them yourself".

Nice video and breakdown of the language differences with the translation. Just a point to note (and I could be wrong, so I'm open to correction)...but the Battle of Thermopylae allowed the Athenians (not the Spartans) to evacuate their city. After Thermopylae, the Greek fleet off the coast meant nothing as the Persians now had a land route once again. They marched on the empty Athens, while the Greeks prepared to defend the Corinthian isthmus and passage onto the Peloponnese peninsula/Saronic Gulf

Excellent video, Brother! ...as an interesting side, in some of _my_ research on the phrase, I found one source that stated that a translation that would help us understand the _intent_ of the phrase betterwould be "having come, take it". In other words, _if_ you can get to me, _then_ take it from me. Regardless of the translation, Leonidas was one awesome dude!
