Molten Modular 17 - Eurorack overflow and update on journey so far

Sadly I now have more modules than I have space for. So I'm using it as an opportunity to examine my rack and decide what stays and what goes. I'll go through all my choices, my recent discoveries, my thoughts and feelings about this modular rabbit hole we find ourselves plummeting through. It's an hour of me running on about modular and that.

May I suggest the stereo output of the oliverb? Kudos on your content, I find your approach refreshing and your beginne adventures entertaining, informative tho other times frustrating (tho entertaining)-dammit I know we both hate reading manuals but you blunder past some useful things- maths as an attenuater for example...short of manufacturers constantly throwing modules at you or forever spending at some point you may come to appreciate the depth of certain modules and the vastness, precision, usefulness and reward. Big fan of the channel. Visiting a friend who has more money and time than you do, and watch him gush with the enthusiasm of a true believer, learn from him, and then go off and do your version. Brilliant. One comment: watching your videos has helped me decide to approach modular from a much more minimal angle than you. I think it's possible that you have hobbled yourself from focus by module overdose. I have certain goals I want to achieve with modular: a combination of learning and utility (use in more traditional songwriting). What is your goal? If it's live performance, then look at it that way. Decide what you will do as a performer, then rack up only that. Practice until you've got it, perform it, repeat. Add modules as necessary, to taste.

Yeah, maybe, some people like a focused approach. I tend to push back against the idea that you must have a plan. What was attractive to me in the first place was that I didn't really know where this would take me and actually it's not been important because every step, every module throws up interesting ideas and possibilities. It's a sort of paradox where you don't know if you want to perform with modular until you have enough modular to be able to perform with. I think now, a few years down the road, where i have performed and reworked the system and been able to make more focused decisions that i am looking to compartmentalise more - building a case for gigging is very much a preoccupation right now - but there's no way i could have started this journey with that in mind. It requires so much knowledge and understanding that you might not have when you start out. So i go by the line that you don't have to understand anything or have any kind of plan to begin experimenting with modular. Plans may well reveal themselves along the way, or not! But my journey is not for everyone :D

I'm finally taking the eurorack plunge!! I've gotten smart & bought myself a semi! The Arturia Minibrute 2S had this incredible deal to include a 6U rack/carrying case/cables for just $150 more & it's in the mail heading in my direction in just a few short days. Except for one Make Noise module that I want to start with in the near future, it looks like all you need are a few ES Distings! So I figure it'll be like this: - MB2S experimentation (enroute) - Komplete Audio 6 upgrade + ES cables to leverage Bitwig/Reaktor/VCV-Rack. - Make Noise module (TBD) - VCA - ES Disting (it almost seems like you could have an entire row of these to get a million different combinations of things! But I'll probably just start with just one...) Despite all the talk about having a lot of VCAs, I usually only see 1 or so on most euroracks displayed on KZbin. I'll probably have to load Reaktor or VCV Rack to figure out the value of more of them.

Yay! Distings appear useful and they are great at being a test bed or a missing module in a patch but they aren’t fun to mess about with. You need a minimum of 1 VCA per oscillator output. And then more when you want to start shaping modulation - but you probably won’t do that for a while. Getting a quad VCA is a great starting point in my view.

pull the momma out - room for more modules :-s problem solved regarding the lack of use of the O-coast, why not simply fabricate a little add on to the case so the o-coast is floating on the side? would take about 5 minutes and a £3 piece of timber

The Z4000 was one of my first modules i bought too before I ever used a modular synth. I was really confused about how it worked even though I had been into synthesis for most of my life. I opened the manual and the first thing it said was how to use the deviater and attenuverter knobs! I'm glad I did because it set me on the right path straight away. What I really love now are my AJH Synth ADSRs that have a delay feature, for modulation that is invaluable! It also loops and has a hold feature which makes it so versatile as an LFO. For modulation a fully featured ADSR is an invaluable tool.

For your question about getting a quantizer for your turing machine: Have you considered the Ornament & Crime? Look up the "quantermain" mode. It is a 4 channel quantiser that you can feed CV to or you can generate pitch CV internally with built in Turing machine. It is 4 quantised turing machines in a small package. I use attenuverters to help control it better. It also does a bunch of other crazy things. It's not as hard to learn as it appears too (common complaint I see)

The fact that you can take the microScale and shift the scale it's using, so you not only quantize to a scale, but then change that scale based on an input, is huge.

Quantizing is something I felt I needed too. My Klavis Twin Waves Osc has some onboard quantizing, and I have a WMD Arpitecht + triad expander that is so incredibly musical. I hear good things about the Intelligel Uscale2 as well. Cheers and happy Knob turning!

Take the Moog out of the rack, put it back into its case & put it on top of your rack & free up the HP for other units.

I recommend the 2hp Quantizer for now, unless you require a “keyboard” interface for scale making. I use it next to my Turing Machine, and am happy with it. Cheap and small and has CV-able diatonic transposition. A basic clock divider can help you vary your rhythms: 4ms RCD or 2hp Div (CV-able divisions are fun).

Hi Robin, thanks for the nice video! For the pico, select drum 2, hold the top button encoder until it flashes green (load preset mode) turn until it flashes red (after the 6 load slots) ,now choose your save slot ( one of the six) and briefly push the encoder... settings are now stored in that slot. Next time you can load whatever settings you saved in one of the 6 slots. Voila👍 hope to meet you in the flesh in Berlin for superbooth!

Thanks for your videos, they have been very useful for my modular journey too. :) You can add other 2 more Moog racks above the 3. Just add a metal bar from the bottom to the top inside (between the wood and the screw holes) and would hold the 5 racks together. Also the powe modules you have should be enugh to power the 5 racks. Just pass the ribbon cable from the inside to the top racks. I did that with mine and I have got 5 racks now. It's very solid. :)

Not random, but you can get a lot of complexity out of Batumi by mixing its outputs together, and with self-patching. Don’t forget to play with the four modes. And the Poti expander is nice. It doesn’t give you anything you can’t do with the jumpers, but it’s a lot more handy. Great show!

I'm just building my first 104hp rack. I'm just a hobbyist and musically im quite amateur if im honest. I like to just create great sounds and one day hope to be able to put a track together. Took me a while to realise what i want to achieve with my rack but now i have a goal (ambient sound scapes with occational beats kicking in) , I'm finding it quite a lot of fun restricting myself to 104hp and trying to get as much of what i need into it (without just buying 2hp modules). Its like a puzzle. I do have some small modules but i dont want a cramped rack as well as I cant afford to fill it with loads of small things. I did find a great DIY uClouds (Magpie Modular currently being built) which will be a great HP saver. Just wish there was a uRings as well. Maths was also one of my first purchases and although its huge on a 104hp rack i find it very useful. Regarding quantizers: The ADDAC "Intuitive" quantizer is amazing because it has four channels each of which can be quantized to the same scale or arpeggio. This way you can have up to 4 voices all playing in tune with each other. However, they're particularly difficult to find right now ever since MylarMelodies did a review of it.

Enjoying watching your journey, especially as I'm at a similar stage to you. You gave me the confidence to build my Turing Machine, so thanks. I know what you mean about Clouds. I too bought mine when i heard it was being discontinued and very soon wished I hadn't. Then I clocked it. Or rather, I triggered it from a sequence from my BeatStep Pro. It tames it and makes it more manageable. Add in a LFO in to either the 'position', or 'size' input (or quantised into the 'V/OCT') and it takes it out of the realm of 'ambient only' into something regular and, in my opinion, more musical. That's assuming you're using a frozen sound source, if you know what i mean? Cheers. :)

As for a quantiser, I bought the ADDAC Intuitive Quantiser. 4 channels. It can be complex, but it's very easy to use for its basic functions. Had to get it direct from ADDAC though, as nowhere had it in stock. I'd definitely recommend it.

I suggest you try plugging some LFOs, for example, to the cv inputs on the Clouds and you might find new enjoyable things from it! I think Clouds is at it´s best when used as a granular synth.

Nice video Robin and great interview with Divkid. you're Pico Drums will save up to six setups, which includes you're sample selection pitch decay and volume info, you can save settings by holding down the top encoder for a couple of seconds until it flashes green, then you'll see as you move the encoder clockwise the led's will light up indicating the 6 save positions, one more turn clockwise will then take you to the save locations and the encoder will flash red, press the encoder on one for now. when you power on you're rig next time make sure the drum select is set to drums2 and much awesomeness happens. well it'll load in you're last used save. loving you're journey, and just realised i hadn't subbed, well that's rectified. deviate setting seems like a positive offset on the outputed enveloppe. thats why you feel like the gate doesnt fully closes. a non offsetted enveloppe will go back to 0v at end of cycle. if you offset it by 1v, then 1v becomes end of cycle, letting audio pass through at all times at minimum 1v amplitude (vca's gain never goes back to zero)

an attenuverter shifts the voltage either higher or lower, like an attenuator but in both directions +/-. You can use your Maths as one too.

Nice video. I sold my clouds to buy a morphagene - that was much more what i was after. For a nice Quad VCA - the Doepfer 1-132-4 is lovely - no knobs but dense functionality AND you can overdrive it for a nice dirty sound. +1 for moving your M32 out - mine never made it in - but it sits right in front of my case so it's always patched in

The part about MI Clouds (~04:20min) - for me it was the same, I didn't get the Clouds at all and then I've upgraded it to Parasite firmware which made it even more complicated which led me to open the manuals and carefully read all of them through. It's amazing module but at the end I think I understand why it was taken away from the market. Anyway, now it's one of the most important modules in my rig.

you never really know what you need until you've bought a ton of modules and start using them (or not as the case may be) I've bought (and sold on) many modules before i got to a rig i was happy with. regarding space... get that mother out of there and back into its original box, it's just WAY too much space to use up in a eurorack. you won't be losing anything but gaining space. (I would have ripped that mother out of there the SECOND I got the graphic VCO in my hands) I have a pittsburgh SV-1 that is not in my rack (it would take up 48hp ffs ;) , like you suggest it sits at the side of my rack.... It is still used in practically every patch. you'll just need some longer patch cables :) the attenuverter on your ADSR will allow you to either amplify the signal (+) or send an inverted version of the envelope (-) like this www.ajhsynth.com/images/New%20Modules/Biased%20inverted%20envelope.png yellow line is original envelope... green is inverted. Agreed the BIA is BY FAR my fave module in euro. (feed it gate patterns into morph fold and harm and all hell breaks loose :) kzbin.info/www/bejne/eHmQhZqYiqyen7c this is 2 sound sources....... BIA and pico drums. its completely nuts. (it also works great as an OSC... feed cv from a sequencer into pitch then modulate the other stuff and you get some crazy results.)

That manhattan analog mixer is based on the CP-3 moog mixer! It has a great saturation character :) You can also use unplugged channels to introduce dc offsets and make things fuzzed out.

Cool, glad to hear it's a good thing. It's weird how it's a little 3 channel mixer module that cost the same as an 8 channel mixing console with faders, EQ, sends and metering i bought for live gigs. I've shuffled and squeezed it into the rack. The Mother is staying for the moment :)

I think you correctly highlighted the sequencer as being the most obtuse thing about the MO-32. Everything else is pretty good. An LFO, noise source, a cv adder, and so forth can be very handy. I daily fight the irrational urge to by a MO-32.

I have the TipTop quantizer and the Arpitecht. Both have pros and cons, but the more I use the Arp... the more I like it. The TipTop, with its slider (and I daresay useless "keyboard") is probably better for more real-time "performance" playing, where I am more set-it-and-forget-it or CV control. I've been enjoying having both, but I think the TT needs to go soon.

You should take the mother 32 out of the rack and use the space to get a Matrix mixer or matrix vca for your batumi. You said you want to combine Batumis LFOs and for that it's perfect. currently your lacking attenuators anyways.putting the batumi outs into something without some kind of attenuation in between is a big no-go for me - subtlety is king! The Matrix mixer solves that. Sure you can use your VCA for it but if your not modulating the level thats a bit of a waste. Batumis expert firmware has built in amplitude control afaik, but that's hidden parameters and RTFM again ;)

Clouds seems to be discontinued to be replaced with something more intuitive perhaps? I've no idea. I've not even started with synth or even thought about it before. I'm dipping my toes in since I seemed interested in an unreleased pedal (Empress Effects Zoia) that has a guitar and synth background. I initially thought of it to be a multi-modulation pedal. I've watched this series in full and have been hooked in seeing your journey. So much so that I may jump into Eurorack?! I did wonder why one of the popular guitar effects companies are releasing a Eurorack module (Strymon Magneto). I definitely see why. It is fascinating!

Doh, same issues. I limited myself to two rows of 84hp and although I started off with a solid base of modules I've added some off the cuff and some more after careful research. Not all of them are gelling , some are not getting the attention they need - lack of free time also being a factor and it's getting a tad muddled. Now I'm at a state of having to re-think the entire set-up but I can't for the life of me work out what I can do without. All I know for sure is what I'd like to add!! :/

Mixers, attenuation, and offset add so much and takes stuff away ;-) when integrating LFOs into a patch. If you clear up space from the mother-32 you've got the graphic VCO ready to make up for that voice then it seems like you could fill up some of that other space with a more playable sequencer. II get what you say about quantizers coming from a more traditional music background and bought a disting for the same reason. The want to have everything in tune especially if you play in a jam with other people. But you still need to tune your oscillators after the quantizer. Which means to make everything musical you'll want to always tune your oscillators to each other and to whom you're playing with. So do you need a quantizer? It seems nice to make arpeggios. I appreciate following your journey.

The quantizer is more for turning the Turing into a tuneful sequencer and for generating melodic ideas rather than keeping things in tune - i tend to tune things as i go :)

yeah, it's handy for arpeggios and swapping between major or minor scales. I still have to figure out why it'll only spit out one note if the z knob is turned more than halfway to the left.

i bought maths cause i thought i needed it, but i never used it, so eventually i sold it. You can always play around with lfos modulating lfos. (a slow lfo modulating a fast lfo modulating an oscillator) could be interesting. Ive also experimented using Batumi as a sound source. putting a sequencer pitch info into its input, then putting the channel into audio rates.

I would sell the Moog modules and then you can put the cool Erica VCO into your rack- that thing looks pretty awesome. Maybe try an external sequencer like Beatstep Pro or Octatrack or Korg SQ-1?

I haven't really seen this suggestion but why not buy another 3 tier mother 32 case and put them side by side since you love the way they look and the height is perfect. Then it start to look like a wall of modular because lets be honest there is no stopping now especially with companies sending you modules

If I would ever come to this… problem/opportunity, I would go through my modules one-by-one. But since one module doesn't do sh** in eurorack, I would take mental notes, which modules I would use to test the one I'm looking at. This way I'd find out, what modules work good together, what modules I tend to use for what purpose and what modules I underuse.

If you add an attenuverter between the Turing machine and a quantizer you get some amazingly interesting control options. You could build an amazing rack out of 12 Disting modules because the Disting has oscillators, it has VCAs, it has LFOs, it has wave tables, it has filters, it can do everything, but you would have absolutely no intuitive idea how to patch it without constantly referring to the manual.

There are a few videos on here already showing you how to rack mount one. You only need to separate the front panel from the main PEC, then detach the PEC from the rear case. The only fiddle bit is reattaching the power cable, a right angled adaptor is one possibility or just leave a suitable blank space to the left of the case to allow for the Make Noise cable/plug.

Re: quantisers...If the Disting is doing the job well for you now and it will also be a delay and a whole bunch of other things (and only takes up 2hp) why not get another couple of them? You know how it works and it's ultimately useful, rather than exciting. Just a thought.
