Love it! I have always been a heavy sleeper through the years. Now that I've been a Mom for over 20 years I can hear a kid retching and getting ready to vomit from half a house away, in my sleep. It's crazy cool how we get trained as Mommies.

I will never forget when my cousins, my sister and I were playing in the bedroom on our bunkbeds. One would be on the bottom bunk on their back at push on the springs of the top bunk to bounce the person on the top bunk. My cousin, Mark pushed too hard and the top bunk legs came off the bottom bunks frame. Next thing we knew, my mom and Aunt were in the bedroom, fixed the bunkbeds, shook there finger at us and said, "Don't do that again!" Walked out of the room and shut the door. We just stood there stunned. Years later I asked my mom about the incident. She said we were giggling. Then it got immediately quiet and they heard "uh, oh." My aunt and mom just looked at each other and headed for the bedroom. They aren't sisters, so sibling intuition wasn't a factor. Mom ears in action!

I sent my husband to an audiologist to have his hearing checked and it was perfect. The audiologist said that men were sent in all of the time by their wives only to find that their hearing was perfect. My husband begged her to fudge the numbers to make it look like he had a deficit. She did not comply. We had many a laugh over that story.

This is so funny as it is so true. My "mommy ears" started immediately after giving birth to my first daughter. I was in my room at the hospital when I heard a baby in the nursery crying. I knew it was my daughter. I walked over to the nursery and saw two nurses rocking babies. I pointed at the one crying and said, "I can take her, that is my baby." They didn't believe me at first and had a good laugh, but checked ids. They were amazed that I first of all heard her in my room, and secondly that I knew it was her.

It's just that it's everywhere you look: girls are showed and expected to care (not just moms) be aware of everything and pick up messes. I was a Grade 2 teacher and already the difference between boys and girls was there x_x When a boy dropped his stuff on the floor, he'd stand there doing nothing while 3 to 4 girls were already on the floor helping out. Then I made them all realize that the girls were great for being nice, but they shouldn't help someone who just stood there like they were maids. And boys should act right away because it's their mess. Cooperation is different from expectation and blocking out one's responsibility. But then I saw how their moms acted picking the boys up (did everything for them) while the daughters were expected to get all their stuff themselves. That's when I realized it's from birth. It's in cartoons, books, ads, songs, and it's emulated everywhere. We have ways to go. Moms need to expect from their boys as much as girls, but also from their husbands (they also are responsible for that paper toilet roll!). Men need to realize that yes, life sucks, and their wives aren't there so they don't have to do things and they don't get to sit down for football if the house is a mess after the wife also works a full shift plus taking care of kids. Or vice versa, some women do the same to their hubbies. It's not a blanket statement. Great on you guys for being introspective! :D

I hear everything sick related or injury related. I also know that 4 year olds need to eat lunch. Somehow or another "they didn't say they were hungry" is ok to not feed them. My adhd daughter also has a super human power. She can actually "HEAR" my eyes open. If its Saturday and I'm wanting to sleep in, to maybe 8 a.m., you can guarantee she will be in her room listening for the eyes.

I will qualify this by saying, I'm 66 years old, have tinnitis (ringing in my ears 24/7, 365 days a year since I was 27 years old, and have 50% hearing loss in my right ear from a family malady, no joke ....SERIOUSLY), and my wife know every bit of this. She is in a room 2 rooms away, both my TV, and her TV are on, and she will talk to me. I can't hear anything discernable as language or words, just a "plethora of sound" (POS). So, I grab the remote as I ask loudly, "What?" She starts repeating as I look for the volume mute buttons, and I have to say "WAIT, wait, wait gotta turn down the TV, turn yours down too." Then if I can't hear, gotta say "Wait, I'm coming to you........" so at least I can SEE her beautiful lips, and lip read to augment my lack of hearing. Or my wife will turn away and walk out of the room......I can't discern what she is saying, and can't read her lips at all to help. I AM NOT ignoring her, I TRULY CAN'T discern or hear what is being said. I get rather defensive when I am accused of not listening. If the eardrum(tympanic membrane) can't, or is impared in moving the signal to the malleus, incus, and stapes, through the semicircular canals, to the Cochlea, to the Cochlear nerve and/or Vestibular nerve, to the brain for analysis. Strokes (of which I have had 2, in 2009, and 2014) can change how you can analyze the received signal. That is IF ALL the links send the signal on, I have nerve damage, so the things I want to hear, I have difficulty. So next time you get angry with someone that you think is ignoring you, find a way to temporarily replicate their difficulty, and empathize. I had made a cassette (yes, it was THAT LONG ago 😳) of John Maxwell, I put it in the player, after about 30 seconds later, my wife said, "I CAN'T STAND THIS!", and popped the cassette out. I asked why, she said, "That whistling is driving me crazy, can't you hear it?" I asked her to tell me when it was normal loudness, listen for 45 seconds, I have a GOOD reason for having you do this. After the 45 seconds, and I popped the cassette out, she glared at me and asked, "What was THAT for?" I said, "What you just heard is what I have heard for 24/7 constantly for the last 15 YEARS." BE GLAD for what you have, and don't have, and show empathy.

Damn, this is so true! But it's not just a "mom/dad-problem" it's a "women/men-problem"! Same thing with my boyfriend. I can stand right in front of the bathroom door (and the bathroom is really small) and talk with a loud voice to him and he says he doesn't hear me, but when I'm in the bathroom and he's talking to me, I can understand him very clearly even when he's not talking with a loud voice... same thing with other situations. BUT THEN sometimes when I'm eating chips while we are watching a movie or when the radio is on (definitely not loud), he goes crazy because it's "too loud"... So I'm like... wtf is going on with his ears? 😂😂😅

Now you made me remember when I was like 7, on a Summer activity thing, and we were playing a game where you need to find a toy inside a big room. While the person was hiding it, my teammate and I were trying to cheat and see where it is. I quickly stopped but he didn't, and a teacher had to turn him and stop him. Then he started shouting "I HAVE EYES IN MY BACK, I HAVE EYES IN MY BACK!!!". When the race started, he was somehow the one who found it, even though he didn't look and he didn't hear anything. I'm starting to get terified.

Never underestimate the power of Mom Hearing. It works for kids, partners, pets... basically anything that’s “off”. I can hear by the sound of one of my dog’s nails clicking on the floor that he’s trying to sneak something unspeakable into the house. I can hear if my cat wants out because she’s bored or because she wants to go potty. The sound of how my daughter turns the pages of her book tells me if she.s actually doing homework or pretending. Even silence can trigger our Mom Ears. Every Mom knows about that ominous silence that spells possible disaster. I’m a heavy sleeper but things my subconscious will qualify as “trigger sounds” or “trigger silences” will have me standing next to my bed and half dressed in the blink of an eye, completely awake and clear-minded. In a normal situation you could fire a cannon foot from me and it wouldn’t rouse me, and in the morning don’t even think of asking me to utter more than a grunt before I’ve had two big mugs of coffee. One little sound that something’s off and I’ll have all cylinders firing with a vengeance though. 🤣 My SO is a single Dad and has developed Mom Ears out of necessity. As a team we’re lethal. And don’t get me started on the Mom Nose. It’s our other superpower. 😎

I think as moms it's instilled in us naturally to pay attention to our offspring in the hopes of keeping them safe. I can hear the pitch of my son's cry from another room and can usually tell what happened. The one time he had to go to the hospital and have stitches, I heard it in his cry immediately that something was REALLY wrong. Men I don't think pay attention because they don't really think they need too? lol My ex-husband was like that. He assumed I'd just take care of everything.

I had my hearing checked and I have a 20 year old’s hearing... So on top of that and being super observant my kids never get away with anything!! My husband is always amazing! And my daughter hates it

Really selective hearing. As a father of five, I had to tune out noise but could hear important things. Tone would get my attention - hurt, scared or very loud would definitely get my attention.

My mom can tell exactly what I mean by my tone of voice in a mumble, one time I just got teeth pulled and had gauze in my mouth, I said mmhh huuuu llm (can I have a popsickle?) and she said, "no, not till after lunch."

My late husband complained about not hearing me and do not get some “phrase” or “utterance” which I thought is well..should be audible or understandable
