The thing that mom needs to realize is that Oliver's lyrics are like the Psalms in a way. He's taking us with him on his emotional journeys, whether they be past or present, right or wrong. He's also a recovered alcoholic but has a song singing 'I gotta get sober, but it ain't gonna be tonight' apparently a state of mind that he's not currently in but a wrong mindset that he's been in in the past thats highly relatable for a lot of people. It's the same concept.

I realize what the psalms are. I also realize that sharing your woes, is cathartic. If like David (who wrote most of the psalms), he’s crying out to the Lord to get him out of the place he’s in, that’s fine but he doesn’t say that - unlike the Psalms. Also, as I mentioned in the video - I’m a problem solving, solution finder not someone who sits in the sadness and cries about it. My music review here. My reaction. Check 11:45 forward because I call out the “woes me” message (comparative to the Psalms), the cry for help but what I would hope is beyond that. There’s absolutely nothing I need to realize here. Maybe go back and take another listen so you can understand that. Take care.

It's beautiful to have an open relationship with your mom. Cherish that relationship. A lot of folks don't have that. Mr. Christopher Anthony is a blessing for us all and it's beautiful to see the spark he created that everyone is talking about. Talking through difficulties is progress. I don’t think I’ve ever commented on KZbin but I want to say thank you for knowing your history!!! It’s amazing to know there are people out there that know the history. ….. I will say I don’t agree with your view of the history, BUT, this country was founded on and survived on an agreement to have discussion that could be in disagreement. The disagreement comes from the republic instead of a true democracy. In my opinion it was necessary to create the nation we live in. Anyways, love that there others that appreciate the true history and founding of this country.

I believe Oliver fully understands that fear is not of the Lord, but we are all sinners. Sometimes this world feels so lost you wish you could see the grace and love of god today. I agree some churches push fear to manipulate and control you, but not all. Again, we are all sinners so don't put your faith in man, but put your faith in God.

I've become a big fan of Oliver. While I may not agree with all of your mom's interpretation I do respect her right to listen and interpret the way she thinks he is writing. The great thing about some of his songs is that you can listen to them and interpret them in the way that you like and express those views. That's what's great about his music and this country you can have your own opinion and express as long as we don't infringe on each. My relationship with my mother was very similar we could openly discuss listen and talk about many things. I know that do to her face she is where she believed she would be. Cherish this time with your mother and know that you were truly blessed.

I think you can truly have both. Your faith can be strong yet you get so tired of fighting in this world of Hell. Most of us have felt that heaven is a beautiful place where we see our loved ones. The problem with a higher minimum wage is the cost of everything goes up, I live in California, minimum wage is 15.50, now it’s going up to 20.00 for fast food workers, seriously! To those who went into debt to get an education to make more money it’s like a slap in the face. They not only have massive debt for that education, now the cost of everything will go up bc of the high minimum wage. A fast food job was traditionally for high school or college kids just starting out or the uneducated starting out, it’s not meant to be a lifelong career. So now, every other worker, are going to look around and say, hey if they are getting 20.00 an hour why aren’t I making more, especially bc the cost of everything is going up. It’s a vicious cycle, like a dog chasing his tail. When I was just starting out, I worked at a fast food place, I made 1.29 an hour, it was the minimum wage at the time, it wasn’t a job meant to be a career. People think now days when they first start out, they should have everything their parents have instantly. I’ve been married 51yrs, it took 10 yrs for us to be able to buy a house, we married young, so it was expected that we would have to work our way up. The cost of living has gotten so high now, kids just starting out or people who are single can’t even afford rent here. This is caused by minimum wage being so high, which drives up the pay for other jobs which drives up the cost of everything else. It’s like a dog chasing his tail! We helped our kids by letting them live at home to save money, until they could afford their own place. So they would have a good start in life. All but my youngest have their own homes. In people’s pursuit of things, they have driven up the cost of necessities, like food. People are paying 8.00 for a cup of coffee, they could make at home for a fraction of the cost, it’s insane, where does it stop?

Absolutely disagree with you. The cost increases are due to the desire to maximize profits which benefit the majority of the wealthiest as well as share holders. It’s pure greed. That’s the fear story they’ve sold us. You can pay a livable wage without increasing costs BUT you sacrifice some profits to do it. It’s the greed cycle. Look at the wealth gap vs stagnation of minimum wage vs cost of living. Direct correlation. Also policy making by the generation that’s been out of touch for a long time. I don’t need to name that generation. They’ve been the ruling majority age for 40- 50 years. Short sided & selfish leadership

What I would like to add... I don't think the line "I want to go home" means de-lifing or giving up. I think it's more like time travel. To me " I want to go home" means to go home to the good old days. For me 1984 was a great year, (ironically). If I Imagine it that way, "I want to go home" is actually " I want to go back when things didn't suck so bad. When a problem or situation, though stressful, could be worked out. When you could work your way out of that stuff. Without crying for the government to fix your problems. "I want to go home" means, "I want to go back, before all the BS, and hatred and being so divided and paying out the wazzoo for anything!", that we're dealing with right now."

Only thing I’ve disagreed with mom on is raising minimum wage. Minimum wage is not meant to keep up with inflation because that would create a death loop. Min wage increases, which increases the price of everything, and then inflation goes up. Rinse and repeat. Minimum wage is a base level of pay that was specifically created so that workers had a starting point to leverage and achieve higher pay through collective bargaining. It was never meant to be a livable wage. And was absolutely never meant to meet the cost of living.
