Mom Warns College Students to Wear Coats After Son Dies

Dorothy Connor is still grieving for her son, a University of Vermont freshman who died of hypothermia last year. Surveillance cameras caught his final moments in subzero temperatures. He was wearing neither a hat nor gloves. Dorothy now shares her son’s story at schools, in the hopes that others may avoid her son’s fate. Caylee He wasn’t asleep. This happened to me once. I drank so much I passed out outside on the patio, I was fully conscious and laid out on the ground. But I couldn’t move even 3 feet to get inside, it was it was one of the coldest nights in Canada and I was shivering like crazy and remember thinking I’m gonna die if I don’t get inside. Anyway after about an hour contemplating mustering enough strength to crawl a few feet I finally made it inside. It took everything out of me. And That was only a few feet, I also remember laying there and thinking about all the people I’ve heard about that froze to death outside while they were “passed out” drunk. Realizing they were most likely fully conscious just to incapacitated to move. Sad to think about. Anyway I decided that night not to ever touch another sip of alcohol and I haven’t since.

I would say the higher drinking age makes things worse. It’s not like it makes it impossible for kids to drink. Instead, it drives them to do it in secret or leads to binge drinking. In areas where the drinking laws aren’t so draconian, people tend to drink more responsibly.

My heart absolutely breaks for this mom. I remember when I was 19 and went to the bars for new years eve and got totally loaded. On the way walking home I remember laying down in the snow to take a break, it made me feel so warm and I started to pass out. So luckily I was with a g/f who made me get up and get home. It’s as someone else said on a similar video: it’s this whole bar culture. You can have occasional fun if your campus has a dining hall and/or a late night food store. That was certainly the case of my alma mater, UMBC. I didn’t have to try to hitch a ride with anybody or get on any buses into Baltimore. I also didn’t have to have alcohol every night of my life. Once you’re of legal age, you can still have the occasional drink as long as you’re at home or with trusted friends and don’t get drunk. Wearing a coat certainly would’ve likely helped keep Connor barely alive, although - as others have noted here - it was that he got drunk and was out in subzero temperatures.
