Not very good reporting. They didn't even explain what the actual danger was with the kid who died after coming up three times for help. Was it a sudden drop off in the depth? Was there some type of undercurrent? Other than stating that the water gets cold, and could get deep - neither of which was offered as the explanation for the kid's death - I didn't see what the point of the story was.

1) Don't dive from such a high elevation. Jump in straight like a pencil, feet first, legs closed, and butt cheeks clenched. 2) Beware of rocks when jumping into the water. 3) Don't swim long distances if you aren't a really strong swimmer. 4) If you get a cramp, just relax and float on your back until it's gone. The quicker you breathe in/out and tense up, the faster you will sink. 5) Stretch beforehand and stay hydrated. Otherwise there is a high possibility of getting a cramp. 6) Don't go swimming while high or drunk. 7) Have at least one strong swimmer in the group that can save you. 8) have at least one person in the group trained in CPR. 9) Use common sense. Follow most/all of these rules and you should be safe.

Even more common is the silky sediment that changes the waters density and as a result makes you less buoyant. It also increases the resistance meaning you need a lot more energy and strength to swim in it. I'm not sure why this isn't mentioned as it's a really common danger and a HIDDEN danger.

@@aidanaldrich7795 It's great that you're an expert and all, but how do you know he didn't hit a really cold patch of water and lose feeling in his limbs, or get sucked under by an underground stream/outlet, or breathe in toxic gases leaching up from something on the bottom like Sulfur Dioxide and get faint or sick? If it makes you feel better to think that swimming in an old mining pit is safe, then go ahead, no one is stopping you. But not everybody's son or daughter is an expert swimmer like you, so they might want to keep their non-expert swimmer kids out of a quarry so they don't drown.

Although they didn’t give the exact reason why he died, here’s my best conclusion: He jumped into the water, and he was met with cold temperatures, which caused his muscles to tighten and cramp. Because of this, he didn’t have the strength to bring himself up and to swim on the surface. He then drowned. This is the best I have right now.

I grew up across the street from a quarry. The only time I ever got hurt was stubbing my toe really hard when getting a running start to jump off the main cliff. Since I was a kid, they've added spray paint to mark dangerous cliffs where rocks and other things may be lurking beneath the water below, several filters throughout to keep the water clean (I used to straight up swim through algae as a kid) and lifeguards at every popular swimming spot. They paddle around on canoes. You also need to sign a waiver when entering which wasn't there when I was growing up. The coolest but scariest thing I would do is swim to the island that we had. It's only about 100 yards away, but while swimming there you can put your head underwater and open your eyes to see a super deep, giant black hole. It always got cold when swimming over it.

@@alonsop9861 pool swimming, even competitive, is significantly different to open water swimming. Someone doing 100m breaststroke on Olympic level may still struggle doing 1k in open water. Different technique and endurance levels. Also, the idea that you have to be on a team to be a swimmer is ridiculous. If you ride a bike regularly , you’re a cyclist, if you swim regularly, your a swimmer, if you run, you’re a runner. Being on a team is in no way an indication of whether they’re a swimmer or not 🤦♂️

When I was in Highschool I had a good friend who drowned in a quarry in Springfield Township in Ohio. He was not only a friend but we grew up on the same street. I’m 54 yrs old now and still have never forgotten. Bob Rex you will always be remembered. Such a young life taken tragically and way too soon.

Wavy Bone true, I've worked as a swim coach and life guard and if you're not trained, it can be incredibly daunting. If I didn't have my training, I'm not sure I would've known what to do either... so hard for everyone involved

Quarries can be great places to swim as long as caution is taken. Any body of water can be dangerous without lifeguards present. Cliff jumping is not for the faint of heart and unless you have someone ready to assist, if needed, it is incredibly risky.

Its because of the tempature drop under like 6 feet the water gets alot colder. If you go too deep you cant swim like normally and u can drown. almost everyone in the comments is so stupid
@MariaLopez-lh4vq7 жыл бұрын
coliniscolin actually when you jump into a quarries the water is first shallow so your confident but as you walk you take surer steps since you can't see the bottom. Once you step over the edge you plummet because there is a whirlpool effect at the bottom that Sucks you in not to mention your foot could get stuck in construction equipment and you can't see so..... ant to add to that, using the water above you to go to the surface is useless your fighting against the water so your basically a goner😐😐😐😐😐not trying to be rude or anything😊☺️

Google drowning. Most people drown in a vertical position. He didn't get pulled down but simply kept sinking as he became too exhausted to tread water.
