Six moments musicaux (French for "Six Musical Moments"; Russian: Шесть музыкальных моментов, romanized: Shest’ muzykál’nykh moméntov),Op.16, is a set of solo piano pieces composed by the Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff between October and December 1896. Each Moment musical reproduces a musical form characteristic of a previous musical era. The forms that appear in Rachmaninoff's incarnation are the nocturne, song without words, barcarolle, virtuoso étude, and theme and variations.
4. Presto, E minor:
The fourth piece, Presto in E minor, presents similarities with the study Op. 10 n. 12 , the prelude op. 28 no. 3 by Fryderyk Chopin and the study Op. 692 n. 21 by Carl Czerny . It is made up of 67 bars for a duration of just under 3 minutes, and is presented in ternary form with a coda. The piece begins with a fortissimo introduction with the left hand performing continuous chromatic sestinas. The central section is characterized by a repetition of pianissimo figures in the right hand and ascending scales in the left hand. The finale is a coda in Prestissimo and the piece closes with a heavy E minor chord reminiscent of the ringing of bells as in the Second Concerto for Piano and Orchestra and the Prelude in C sharp minor . The piece is an important exercise in resistance and precision: the beginning opens with a figuration that requires a tenth interval. The frequent octave intervals and rapid sextuplets require rapid action of the wrist and arm. The two melodies in this song serve to keep both hands busy.
