19th May, Kaldenkirchen, European Championship From Custom Car magazine A few weeks before the big European Hot Rod meet at Wimbledon a team of British rods toured Europe in a 'Brtain v Europe' match race series. They came second. The rot had set in. Not long after, a strong team of drivers from the Grand Prix Midget Club went to Kaldenkirchen to contend the European Midget title; the team included Frank Boyles, then title holder. As luck would have it two of the fastest continentals drew front-row positions-Peter Loff and Wim Janssen-with Boyles having to start way down the field. It was a great race, but Loff got away to a good start and held his lead to the chequered flag. Mick Bonner drove like a demon and may well have passed Loff had his engine not overheated, forcing him to slow down and come second. The jovial Janssen placed third, followed by Geoff Hughes, Frank Boyles and Berti Heuhsen.
