Momentum is the product of an object's mass and its velocity. It is a vector quantity. Newton's second law can be rearranged to reveal that the net force on an object is equal to the rate of change of the object's momentum. The larger the net force experienced by an object, the more rapidly the object's momentum will change.

I grasp the implication of momentum however I do not understand what momentum itself is.

It is a mathematical quantity which has physical significance like how i understood it is it helps us to understand some physical phenomena but isn't a physical quantity itself. It is mathematical in nature and people get confused because they think momentum is a fundamental property of an object but it is not. I am saying this again it is a mathematical quantity
