Hey, I never thought that I would be so confused about momentum and KE in my life, but here i am! So the main itch in my head is that, we always talk about KE referencing with work, PE and distance.. which is reasonable but momentum is simply explained as the "quantity of motion". Also momentum and KE are related to each other as in the formula P= KE squared upon 2M. So here is my question, 1. How come with two particles with inversely related mass and velocity can have same momentum but different KE where KE is the function of their masses?! ( i understand through the formula, but what does that information imply?) Or do i dont understand Energy at all? this really has me questioning my entire knowledge of physics, help!

04:58 - "Because it [the IMPULSE] is the Product of Force with Time" --> Hi, it looks to me it would be More Meaningful, More Intuitive, to say instead: - "Because it [the IMPULSE] is the APPLICATION of Force DURING A CERTAIN PERIOD of Time. What Do You think? :)

Sir I have a doubt Example Object 1 mass=5 velocity=6 Object 2 mass=6 velocity=5 momentum of Object 1=30 momentum of Object 2=30 Ke of Object 1=90 Ke of Object 2=75 Same momentum, different kinetic energy. What would happen if Both collided in perfectly elastic conditions

Thanks for this explanation! Can you explain why shooting a heavier arrow from the same bow will cause greater penetration? (The heavier arrow will have greater momentum but ideally the same KE).
@andreashon
@andreashon Жыл бұрын
The arrow with the greater kinetic energy will penetrate deeper. And as E_kin=mv², it depends on the velocity as a square, and on mass - only linearly. And as your bow is a real life object it accelerates arrows with different masses unevenly. The bow contracts with the finite speed, and to pass the same energy to half as heavy arrow it has to contract 4 times as fast. Third as heavy - 9 times as fast and so on. You see, the bow bumps into its constructional limits when decrease of arrow weight can no longer increase the speed of the contraction. (Imagine a grain of sand, which weights ~0.0001g - your bow won't be able to accelerate it to near supersonic speed to match the kinetic energy of ~50g arrow, no mater what, because it couldn't accelerate its bare string that much) So there is an optimal (in terms of energy transfer) weight of an arrow for every paticular bow.

Sir, great explanation. have been searching for a video exactly like this from so long to understand the real meaning and purpose of momentum and kinetic energy of an object and the difference between them. I need some help in understanding one problem I have been facing. When two vehicles having heavier and lighter mass have same momentum, it is known that the kinetic energy of the lighter mass vehicle will be greater compared to heavier mass vehicle. My doubt is , which vehicle requires more force(or impulse) in the opposite direction to make them stop in 1 second? And which vehicle will cause a greater acceleration on a block of mass (say 5kg)? Which is more dangerous? having more momentum with heavier mass or rather more kinetic energy with lighter mass?

If same force is applied to stop the two vehicles, then to stop the lighter vehicle, it will require more time than stopping the heavier vehicle. So since impulse is Force × time, that means the smaller vehicle has higher impulse.

For your second question, I believe since both vehicle have same momentum(strength to cause another body to move), both could produce same acceleration on 5kg block.

Having more momentum means it has higher possibility to cause harm. Having high kinetic energy means it has more force needs to be applied in order to stop it.
