I always kind of felt sorry for her in the 90s anime. It was like she just wanted a friend but would kill anyone who she touched. I wonder if she is like a metaphor for something, or someone cursed her?

Moomin Valley is that fairy tale idealized version of what the socialist agenda teaches the dimwitted into believing as a true way of living. Even the Amish have a capitalist aspect to their society, so the whole 'true socialist' narrative is a dream only workable in a fictional story.

Yeah. And you know what? I encountered Moomin at the age of ten, and found the Groke a figure of sympathy, not fear The word has passed into my everyday speech ie. 'gerraway, you Groke', 'I feel grokely; etc. It's a great sustitute for swearwords, I find. [I'm nearly 70]

I remember this stop motion show! The Groak freaked me out! I saw this in English too on my TV. I can't remember what channel this was on. It was a while ago. I never saw the other Moomins show that was 2D animation but I remember this stop motion one. I think the other Moomins show was animated by a Japanese animation company.

The Moomins (Originally: Opowiadania Muminków/Die Mumins) - Poland/Austria, 1977-82 (TV series). The Japanese versions were made prior to this. The animation here is clearly in the Germanic style.

Tufslan and Vifslan think the ruby's value lies in its beauty and the joy it brings. The Groke sees only it's monetary value, and is willing to intimidate others to get it, and eventually trades it for another very expensive object.

Funny, I still remember the answers from my childhood. The suitcase contains the King-Ruby (symbolizing hidden love), and the hat belongs to Trollkarl, the Magician (mistakenly translated as the Hobgoblin, here).

Groke seems to be a spirit of winter. Perhaps in the shows native europe, where winters are bitterly cold, people would dislike the groke... But here in Australia, I personally despise the extreme heat, and love what cold we get in winter and autumn. The heat miser from the rudolph cartoons is a more appropriate weather spirit to despise IMHO.

I'm only fourteen, and I'm from Canada, so I'm pretty sure I never watched this as a child and if I did I certainly do not remember doing so. But I saw a tumblr post mentioning how scary 'The Groke' was, so I looked (what I believe to be a her?) up and she's(?) not that bad. Kind of cute, actually.
