Joan Crawford was once asked about the next generation of actresses in Hollywood, and she said none of them had potential EXCEPT for Faye Dunaway 😂 Love these retro reviews, more please!!

idontcarerocks Hi. Interestingly enough, Bette Davis, who was very enthusiastic about and showed great sympathy for the newer actresses (whom she equally referred to as actors, good on her) because with the loss of the studio system they were truly left on their own to find any kind of part with the dreaded casting couch looming in every office. In all her wonderful tv interviews I've seen, from Dick Cavett to Carson, to the lesser known hosts, she was totally blunt about literary everything. I could see especially Cavett and Carson, whom she sent to his knees laughing with a sexual word that got bleeped, absolutely adored her. The in house audiences actually listened to her stories, some quite candid. She was a Star alright, as was proven again and again when the audiences stopped the show as soon as she entered with standing ovations to which she responded with a bow, then a second, a third, and on Carson a fourth that so affected her that she went to center stage, threw out her arms and gave several blown kisses then, pro that she was, went back and sat down. Truly a mutual love fest. Carson was clearly moved. To his credit, he didn't have of it cut out for time. She was every inch a diva in the best sense. Now here's the fun part. As I said, she was always totally blunt. Every appearance she made, she was asked which young actresses she liked the most. She liked several. Then she was asked if there were any she disliked, and one name came out almost before the question was finished. Faye Dunaway. Emphatically. Faye Dunaway. Couldn't stand her. But for all the right reasons. She considered her unprofessional. Evidently, they'd made a movie together, don't know the title. But she showed up hours late, unprepared, was dismissive of the crews, nasty to people to their face in front of everyone (except Miss Davis,) made change demands on the set, argued and insulted the director on the set, took breaks when she felt like it, and left early. This was the polar opposite of the way Davis worked and utterly unforgivable in her assessment. This single word, unprofessional, could never be said of Bette Davis, no matter how lousy the material thrust by contract on her. I wonder if years later, she bothered to see Mommie Dearest. I doubt it. But whatever their personal animosity, she always gave Joan Crawford public credit for being professional. I think that's saying quite a lot.

Not to get all serious, because I loved this review (as all your others) but abuse can be very different in families. So one child's experience isn't another's. Christina has said that Christopher had it worse than she did, so his experience might have been consistent with thinking this film was accurate. Whereas the twins might not have had the same(or any) abuse. Anyhew, loved the discussion of Joan's legs as separate characters. Hilarious choice by Faye.

Her behavior is consistent with a mother with a Narcissist Personality Disorder. It's very real and true in a lot of cases. And the children are purposefully treated differently when one parent is a Narcissist. I'm sure all of the children have different stories which would be consistent with NPD. JS

yes, it is I know a man who constantly abuse her children, and wives. I don't know but that kind of abuse it's really hard to prove it. Every women, divorced her, and took the children away from him, except one, but because his abuse she become mentally ill, he completely destroyed her so he got the children, beside of his abuse. He is a very sick men, she choose young women, like when he met his wives mention above, he was around 50 and she was 17-18. For his life, can be a good Hollywood movie, but you will have that feeling, it's uncomfortable to watch because it could happened and it happened.

In the later scene where you can see Carol Anne with aged makeup/practical effects, joan was also meant to look older but faye refused to have her face aged up too, for her own vain reasons but it rlly takes you out of it (as does everything else in the movie) when you see joan as never aging (ageing?)

Ok so I watched this movie for the first time today and I find it interesting to hear how over the top she seems to most people. My mom suffers from bi polar disorder and acts almost exactly like that. It was sad and upsetting (not triggering) for me to watch, but I really liked how the movie accurately portrays how chaotic, unpredictable and conflicting it can be to have a mom like that. I was also happy to finally understand a lot of the references to this movie I’ve seen and heard but never understood 🤣🙌🏾. Thanks again guys. This is my favorite KZbin channel ❤️🖤

I think the director is trying to show that that is actually how Crawford was...all sweetness and light one minute and a raging monster the next. That's how malignant narcissists are. Narcissists ARE that extreme. It's not just bad movie making. It's inherent to Crawford and her narcissism. The movie is trying to show that narcissists are so self-centered that others are just peripheral characters in their lives. That disjointedness is a representation of Crawford's own emotional disjointedness as a narcissist.

It’s a very interesting movie IMO. It’s a mix of sad and scary drama but also hilariously over the top acting/makeup/fashion and iconic quotes every few minutes Plus Faye delivered one of the most memorable acting performances of all time. It was very theatrical and operatic but there are people who act exactly like that in real life though

I can relate to being conflicted, wanting more depth and cohesion in the storyline, and remembering it in a more comical way than it actually felt watching it. This movie made it imperative to search out every Joan Crawford film I could find. The book had a different and even more grim vibe with much more sadistic and mean spirited abuse than even the movie. Great review! Thank you!

Faye Dunaway is more believable as Joan Crawford. Jessica Lange Joan Crawford's character was to soft, acted to wimpy. Joan Crawford was strong, stood up for her self, and let nobody stand in her way. Joan Crawford is not wimpy, she knows what she wants. Joan is not this sweet innocent person that every body made her out to be on the program Feud.

Please please please review "LEAVE HER TO HEAVEN", the reception to the movie has actually improved a lot critically over the decades, pertaining to Gene Tierney's excellently underplayed performance and the lush visuals of the era make it quintessentially campy in an unintentional way. It spawned the whole psycho female lover genre think, "Single White Female" and "Gone Girl" way before anyone could even rationalize a beautiful mentally-deranged woman from high society. A lot of the movie is serious, but some specific scenes are so dated and staged, it makes for many funny moments highlighted by some interesting serious scenes that were groundbreaking in Hollywood. A film that has some great subtle camp that you have to look deeply to appreciate.

...I found a VHS tape today and it was a recording of this movie. I watched the entire thing and loved it. Then I found out you guys had a review of it! I had no idea this was based on a true story! damn, now I feel weird about this!

I still wish Faye would embrace this movie. People love this movie and her performance. Even if it's for the "wrong" reasons. Can you imagine her at a screening of this movie? She'd get more attention and publicity than she has in years. It'd be great! And great review by the way. You're both awesome. Definitely subscribing.

hate that this role was purely amazing for Faye and doing it with perfection. But Hollywood turned on her big time for doing it

Faye overacted in this movie like I have never seen before; it was intended to be taken seriously but it came out like a parody.

This movie is the dramatic equivalent of "At Long Last Love": beautiful on the surface, rotten at the core.
