Katara is indeed one of the best waterbenders in lore, but Yakone casually bloodbended about sixty people, including Aang and Toph, without moving, and while laughing. During daytime. He is leagues above Hama, who needed the full moon power-up to bloodbend, and she did two people at most, controlling each with one hand. The fact Katara broke free from Hama's grip doesn't mean much in this context. Yakone is stupid level OP and broken. Also, you were put off by Tarrlok making Korra levitate above the ground with bloodbending, but didn't even comment how he and Yakone can lift people off the ground and toss around like ragdolls. You've seen how metalbending improved and evolved since AtlA. And now you've seen how bloodbending improved and evolved. And it's some scary shit.

It's an infamous ability at this point thats been outlawed, maybe due to others starting to learn. o.o Im not saying shes at Yakones level, but i do wonder if she could be able to somewhat withstand it. She would certainly have a higher resilience than the others. Thats why im kinda happy shes not in the flashback. I feel like you'd have to put more focus on Katara trying to resist. @xInfoRaderx I don't think you can be naturally skilled in something, skill requires practice. But yes, at least the way the show presents this is that Yakone and his sons are a special bloodline of bloodbenders. But it is a bit more complex than that. Hama needed the full moon to bloodbend specifically because full moon gives waterbenders significantly more power. But someone who is naturally more powerful than Hama (she was very skilled and experienced, but not particularly powerful, her best move in terms of waterbending power is nothing special compared to what Katara, Korra and Unalaq can do during a day) may be powerful enough to bloodbend at any time without the full moon power boost. It comes with practice, Tarrlok mentions that it took him and Amon about three years to learn to bloodbend any time. So in my opinion, the best waterbenders we know can potentially learn to bloodbend anytime as well, but that will require a few years of practice on people or animals, and this is just not something Korra or Katara would do.

In the original avatar, it was sort of implied that if you are a more powerful water bender than the bloodbender then they couldn't affect you. Katara broke out of Hama's hold before she learned how to bloodbend and even say it's cause she's more powerful. That might also be the logic behind why Aang could overpower it with the Avatar State.

Contains spoilers about the season finale So that is actually a genuine question I had. Do you have to be a bloodbender to get out of the other person's grip, or just a stronger waterbender? Because, yes, bloodbenders are very powerful waterbenders, but theoretically, someone could be stronger and not be a bloodbender. In Katara's case, she hadn't bloodbent before, when she was attacked by Hama, but she did pick up on the skill very shortly after that. So was she able to get free because she learned how to bloodbend while Hama was doing it to her, or was it just because she was younger and stronger? Because I think a very popular theory about bloodbending is that to get free, you have to bend your own blood to flow normally while someone is bloodbending you. Now, I am pretty sure Katara wasn't consciously doing that, but yeah, this just makes me think. But since none of the Avatars were bloodbenders, I guess being a stronger waterbender is enough. The Avatar state might just be something else entirely, but Korra does manage without it. So it is probably more likely that it is about strenght. (Though she wasn't 'technically' a waterbender when that happened, so I don't really know. And neither is Mako. I don't know how he was able to shoot his lightning either)

But that would imply that it really does just come down to the strength of the water bender rather than their ability to bend blood. Maybe just being a stronger water bender makes it hard to be directly affected by bending, sort of like how Fire Benders don't get burnt as easily (sorry Zuko)

Isn’t it clear that over time some waterbenders get the idea to blood bend (especially in a more modern time in which you know the human body better). But just once in a while there is a bender powerful enough, to actually be able to do it. I saw many many reactions and a lot of people had the idea of blood bending, even early in the reactions.
