If anyone got confused like Momo lol, heres a quick explanation. She's talking about 'school age', as in the grade/year that you are in school. Since the cutoff point of a school year is at September, anyone born between September of the year and the August of the following year fall into that grade/year. Momo, Sana, Jihyo and Mina were all born in the same academic year. So its kinda weird to call someone in the same grade as you as unnie. Correction: the exact months would be different since Japan and Korea school years start in April and March respectively, but all four of them would still be in the same school grade/year

Momo probably just have slight problem explaining it. The culture of Japan and Korea is very different. Korean really emphasize the age difference in their language formality down to the weeks, days and even hours. Japan on the other hand care more about their relationship closeness and setting (school, work place, people you didn't know) more than age

Just to add on why mina calls jeongyeon, unnie. If they follow the Korean age system, mina isn't consider the same age as jeongyeon. But if they follow the Japanese age system, mina and jeongyeon are the same age friends.

Technically, it's not about the same age, it's about the same grade(school year). The word 'same age(동갑)' she used just made things confusing. So, 96s and 97s are of different ages, of course. But still they can be treated the same age and be friends to each other. This whole things could be so much confusing.. The unique Korean age calculation method, the Korean and Japanese school systems, and the Asian culture, which is strictly distinguished by age, are all mixed in this situation. 😂

I think i got, the school year in Japan starts on April 1st and ends on March 31st of the following year. On April 1st 2003 Mina was six years old as her birthday is March 27th thus entering school at six years old, Momo and Sana are children born in November and December 1996 on April 1st 2003 they were the same age Mina's age. In Japan their school calendar starts from April. that explains why November Japanese Momo is "same school-age" as March Mina. But Korean age goes by the year, so 1996 Korean Jeongyeon is unnie to 1997 Mina. Hope that helps.

Since both JY and Jihyo are koreans, and korea school semester starts in March, if they happen to be in the same school, both November JY and February Jihyo could be classmates thus becoming "friends". Similarly for Momo and Mina - they can be classmates aka "friends" in Japan since Japan semester starts in April. However, we need to understand the context and situation when you first get to know a person. Mina "met" JY in Korea, so the Japanese system shouldn't count here. Even if we use the Korean school semester, March Mina is junior to both JY and Jihyo (Semester starts in March 1st, Mina is "late"... heheh). Also, other than during school age, for adults they will usually go by Birth Year for seniority. In the end, some will disregard and do away with such formalities so as to feel more closer. East Asian culture is a lot about respecting one's senior and the "school semester / age" + different countries confuses more... :p
