Monastery ruins Hude

The Hude Monastery is a former Cistercian abbey in the municipality of Hude in the district of Oldenburg (Lower Saxony/Germany), parts of the buildings of which have been preserved.
The monastery was founded in 1232 by Count Otto I of Oldenburg and occupied by monks from the Marienthal monastery near Helmstedt. The monastery church served as the official burial place for the Counts of Oldenburg for more than two centuries.
In its heyday, the Hude Monastery was the spiritual and economic center of the region. It had a large agricultural estate, a mill, a brewery and a brickworks. The monastery was also an important educational site.
The monastery was dissolved in the course of the Reformation in the 16th century. The buildings were initially used as a palace, but later they fell into disrepair.
Today the monastery ruins are a popular destination. The ruins of the monastery church are well preserved and offer an impressive sight. The monastery grounds are surrounded by an idyllic landscape park.
