Thanks for showing the innards of the swivel base. I had been curious about its operation. Too, the Bondo repair was interesting.

Hi Tom ! I love that power arm ... so another project for the TO-DO list ! I'll pause the video and see if I can catch all the part, make a drawing for a nice little project with some challenges ;-)) Thx for sharing !

Thanks for taking the powerarm apart, I was really curious how that would work. In my head I was picturing various but ineffective clutch systems and bizarre ultimately unworkable mechanical locks. I was stuck in a rut and couldn't see the elegant simple solution this used!

Bondo also works great for patching a chip in concrete floors and if you get the right color hardener it is hardly noticeable.

Hi Tom, great video as usual. Thanks for showing the innards of the power-arm, nice simple design, nice effective piece of kit ! I find an 18 mm snap-off utility knife blade is great for scraping/post-spooging. 3-4 inches long or so, and it's flexible - you can (carefully) bend it. Just bear in mind the 'snap-off' in the name :-) !
@morrisgallo23619 жыл бұрын
Another great meal. You mentioned adjusting the tightness of the ball using the large nut. The set-screw would then hold that position while the snap ring keeps the loose joint intact. Therefore you wouldn't have devet for the set-screw as you can't foretell at what position the nut will come to rest
@chemech9 жыл бұрын
Morris Gallo More likely, the nut is *supposed* to remain in a fixed position, and the range of motion of the lever arm is intended to be sufficient to compress and release the brass/bronze socket against the steel ball... Using a 5/8" - 11 thread, the motion of 1/4 turn will translate into (1/11)" /4 = 0.023" Doesn't seem like much, does it? You just need to set or release the clamping action, so it's plenty of motion... and, another reason for making the socket out of bearing metal. Regards, Eric
@morrisgallo23619 жыл бұрын
chemech Perhaps I was unclear. I believe we both agree the large nut (round threaded disc) is supposed to adjust the allowable play between the housing, ball, and bearing cup, so that the simple small motion of the lever compresses these three components and thereby locking out any motion. Once this ideal position of the large nut is achieved, then it is the function of the set-screw to hold the large nut in position and prevent any loosening due to the rotational forces of using the lever.
@chemech9 жыл бұрын
Morris - That's more like my understanding of how the design is supposed to work... except that I would call the movement of the screw "travel", and the nut can be rotated such that the motion of the lever arm and its associated motion, the travel of the screw - has its upper limit set to compress the socket against the ball in the correct location. Then, as you say, lock it in place with the set screw and a bit of torque, and the machine should function smoothly... Cheers, Eric

You may want to look up spooge in the Urban Dictionary - it might not mean what you hope it does. My PowerArm Jr has a much smaller brass "jam plate" - about 1/2" diameter. As somebody has noted, the big nut has spanner holes to adjust the tension before you tighten the set screw.
@KnolltopFarms9 жыл бұрын
Zander Kale I think that variation of which you speak has an "L" in it, no? Maybe they're both in there, I'm not sure. I'm always wary of going to the Urban Dictionary for fear of getting lost and possibly repeating what I can never un-learn, LOL!
@zanderkale9 жыл бұрын
Knolltop Farms Nope, I also checked a bunch of online dictionaries (including Wikipedia), and, while definitions vary, the one I'm thinking of is common to all of them. And you're right, some things you can never unlearn, which is why I got a giggle out of Tom's use of the word.

"Spooge" interchangeable with "Sparge"; to inject a material with the intent of displacing unwanted material. (usually with liquids. We use argon gas(bubbling with a ceramic diffuser) to sparge dissolved organic vapors from a sample of water. Not to be confused with "Spluge" which implies an application of excess material usually with some forward velocity.

I've found that filler adhesives like epoxy, silicone rubber, and bog (what we call bondo down under) grab better if they are forced into the surface of the bits to be joined under a bit of pressure to break the surface tension, that is: scrape some onto the surface with the spatula end leaning on it a bit, then build up the bead as normal. I used to repair (electronic) PCBs and it's become a habit - even with wood glue... :) I enjoy your work, sir!. david

I'm a wood carver, been doing it since 2014 when i retired from the army. I inherited one of these and the handle was loose so thankfully I found your video to help me figure out how to disassemble it fully. After cleaning it and reassembling it I find I am unable to get the handle mechanism to lock it in place anymore. I know it has something to do with the main disk in the bottom. the locking screw holds the disk is in, but the compression isn't there. thoughts?

Them Wilton Power Arms aren't cheap (>$150). Other companies make them and the price goes through the roof. Would be a great lathe project. Could make your own that is much stronger and more durable than the cast models. PanaVise makes one, but it is for lightweight (tieing flies, ha ha) use and just for holding things at odd angles (while soldering or very light application of force). Definitely a useful item when welding small stuff.
