Garcinia indica. It's the fruit of the plant, so yes, it's vegetal. Grows in the Western Ghats. You can find it in stores that cater to South Indians and so forth. In Canada I see it in stores that cater to Punjabis sometimes, though I don't think it's eaten in Punjab.
