Swami Ranganathananda gives a lecture in Berkeley, California 1980s

This was filmed during Swami's tour of the Vedanta Centers of West.
Swami Ranganathananda, the thirteenth President of the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, was born on 15 December 1908 at Trikkur village near Trichur in Kerala. His pre-monastic name was Shankaran Kutty. His parents were Neelakantha Sastri and Lakshmi Kutty Amma. Young Shankaran was deeply inspired by the teachings of Sri Ramakrishna and Swami Vivekananda. Consequently, he joined the Mysore Centre in 1926.
He served at the Mysore Centre and also the Bangalore Centre for more than a decade, under Swami Siddheswarananda. Swami Shivananda gave him the spiritual initiation on 30 June 1926. Shankaran received his brahmacharya vows on 23 March 1929 and sannyasa on 23 January 1933, both from Swami Shivananda.
Swami Ranganathananda served as the Secretary and the Librarian at the Rangoon Centre, between 1939 and 1942. After the bombing of Rangoon during the Second World War, Maharaj left for India on foot along with other Indian evacuees from Burma. After his return, he served as the head of the Karachi Centre, from 1942 to 1948, until the partition of India. The Mission found it difficult to continue its activities at Karachi after the partition and so it had been closed. The Swami served as the Secretary at the Delhi Centre, from 1949 to 1962. His classes on scriptures at Karachi and later at Delhi were immensely popular and were attended by many distinguished personalities.
Swami Ranganathananda served as the Secretary of the Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture, Kolkata, the Director of School of Humanistic and Cultural Studies and also the Editor of the Institute’s journal. In 1973, he became the head of the Hyderabad Centre where he founded the Vivekananda Vani School of Languages, a temple and a library. He used to deliver spiritual discourses regularly.
Swami Ranganathananda was chosen by the Government of India for the Padma-Vibhushan Award in 2000, but being wholly dedicated to the cause of the Order, he declined the honour as it was conferred on him in his individual capacity and not for the Order.
Swami Ranganathananda was regarded as a saint, savant and ‘silver-tongued’ orator. He had authored over 50 books, some of which have been published by noted institutions like the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and others, besides the publication centres of the Order.
‘Godward Passion and Manward Love’ was his motto. Swami Ranganathananda stressed on service as a way of life, and Vedanta as a science of religion. His personality was marked by simplicity, profound love for humanity and an attitude of equality to all. Oratorical skills and intellectual inclination marked him out among his peers.
Swami Ranganathananda passed away on Monday, 25 April 2005 at the age of a little over 96. To commemorate the birth centenary of Swami Ranganathananda, the Government of India’s Department of Post released a postage stamp in the denomination of rupees five only, on 15 December 2008, at Kolkata.

Revered Swami Ranganathananda Maharaj is just an burning reflection of Swami Vivekananda. His wisdom, knowledge, realization everything are just beyond our Imagination. It is a great learning experience in every way, to everyone present. Unexpected viewing this video. Fortunate enough. Great analytical, lucid lecture. Cannot imagine and comment his memory, knowledge and moreso the balance and stability appearing in his face. Heard a few lectures personally on Sunday evenings at Hyderabad Rk Mutt during 1987 and there after I remember. After his departure to Calcutta, I gradually did not go as I was in touch with a Guruji. Swami had been a great inspirator. He was a great asset to RK Mutt at that time. @@gurvirsingh9790 You are right, it is a bane, a problem waiting to be fully solved. But is it not better than it once was? Perhaps a democracy built on top of a caste system can be nothing but hypocritical. Regardless, it is not the essential message of Vedanta, to my ears. As a total outsider to Indian society, the caste system appears to me as an attempt, within a society, to reckon with the fact that human beings have varying capacities, and that the society has specific wants. Absent the complex factors that resulted in prizing individual autonomy in the West, classification by birth would seem to be the standard way to set things up. That said, if the boundaries between castes are absolute, it must feel like a prison -- is that where you see the place for growth, loosening the boundaries? Of course, by modern standards, the idea of social role through ancestry seems antiquated. But still the problem remains -- what are all the people to do? What role? It's not true that anyone can be anything; we all have different capacities. Meritocracies seem to have the danger that the rich get richer and the poor get poorer, without limit, so that gradually there is only an overclass and an underclass. And what if there are no roles available for the underclass anymore? -- which appears to be a growing threat for workers in modern democracies that slowly make use of AI and robotic technologies. I'm not totally rejecting what you're saying, just think it's quite a difficult problem.

Grateful to Vedanta video for presenting us with this illuminating speech by one of the greatest RKM monks of our times. His differentiation between what he perceptively termed the ethnical level and the higher(mystical) level of religion is remarkable. What always fascinated me about Maharaj Ji is his insightful commentary on the contemporaneity. He has taken up the mantle right where the famous Vedanta monks ( the early second generation monks included those who went to America, our Swami may be called one of the late second generation monks along with Swami Gambhiranandaji) left it.

There was not a stir for a whole hour, we just frozen listening to guru, as he exposed humanism do clearly with historical to present, a treasure of knowledge and spirituality. It's also a great pleasure to hear Swami Ranganathanandaji's voice on 11th September as on this day, 128 years ago Swami Vivekananda jiggled the whole world through His divine sparks which were bursting like an atom bomb, specially in Ranganathananda Maharaj's word as a Vedantic bomb. Swamiji on that day taught the whole world about the principle of toleration, principle of positive acceptance and here's like the Vedantic Humanism... What a profound philosophy the Upanishad is! Thakur Shree Ramakrishna said once, "Naren will teach the whole world". Indeed His closest disciple Swamiji taught the whole world what is Sanatan religion and what it is carrying, the sacred blood of Ancient Divine Rishis, the essence of Vedas and Knowledge of Brahman. Similarly, Thakur Shree Ramakrishna's direct disciple Swami Shivananda's disciple was Swami Ranganathananda. Once his Guru Swami Shivananda asked, "What do you want from me?" Swami Ranganathananda Maharaj replied, "Gurudev, give me the power as if I could spread the profound messages, Vedantic philosophy and Swamiji's teachings throughout the world". His Guru replied, "You'll do it". That's why today we're blessed to get a glimpse of Swamiji here who is the burning reflection of Swami Vivekananda! Not as a devotee of Ramakrishna Order but even from a neutral point of view, It's said that, The Ramakrishna Order is enough to integrate whole world through its selfless love. Today we need such messages and teachings what Thakur said in Kathamrita/The Gospel of Shree Ramakrishna. Jai Shree Ramakrishna, Maa Sarada, Swamiji Vivekananda.

Great reverence for this highest 👏 Vedantic ,humane ,urbane , and a true humanist , intellectual , and a dedicated Sanyasin of the highest order of S S R K P -- S S S M -- S V -- S N -- Guru S S -- lineage. Very fortunate to see him from very close, during my early college days, during his visit to Ramakrishna Mission "Ashram " , Patna. May be in the turbulent years between 1974 -- 1977 . I still recollect his evening walk in the garden lawn cum passage of the Ashram right in front of the main administrative block , that housed a lavish library of variety of books, in the ground floor huge hall . The second floor , yes , I still correctly remember , had the guest rooms ......besides as well the Sanyasins/monk's and brahmachari's room.
