“True 50mm” is not an appropriate way to describe lens behavior on different sensor sizes. It is always a 50mm. It will always have the characteristics and distortion of a 50mm. Prior to ten years ago, no one described a 50mm on a normal Super 35 movie set as “75mm”. And no one calls a 50mm that can only accommodate a super 35 or a 2/3rds frame an “untrue” 50mm. That’s my two cents! Love your vids! I just feel the sensor size as it relates to lenses convo is confusing sometimes. But ultimately I suppose I’m just being picky in terms of word choice rn.
@mondobytes4 жыл бұрын
Steven Bailey You’d be surprised as to how many people don’t know that the field of view changes depending on the sensor size. I felt the way I explained it made the most sense for everyone to visually see the difference when the same lens is used on a different sensor.
@stevenbaileytv4 жыл бұрын
@@mondobytes Totally! Makes sense to use equivalent FOV to describe lenses on different sensors. I just would hate for people to spend extra on a FF camera thinking it will magically make their lenses "behave properly" or something like that, haha. There are some cool videos online showing that once DOF and FOV is adjusted for, it's extremely difficult to tell the difference between S16, S35, FF, and beyond. I think about that a lot when I drool over FF cameras. If I love how a 50 looks on FF, then I'm happy knowing my 32-35 essentially achieves that look on my S35 camera. I hope this isn't coming off as being critical of you! Just throwing in some thoughts about ways we talk about things and thinking of clearer ways we might be able to talk in the future.
@mondobytes4 жыл бұрын

but it's cropped... so it inherits the characteristics and distortion of a 75mm. what he said was actually more accurate then what you said
@stevenbaileytv3 жыл бұрын
@@Sunny-rk8us Equivalence goes both ways. You could just as easily say a 75 on a FF "inherits the characteristics and distortion" of a 50 on a crop sensor. I would argue that you are not changing anything about the optics at all by swapping sensor sizes because of course you aren't and the optics of a 50, even at the center of its image circle, will look unique to that 50 no matter how large or small the image sensor is. Plus there are plenty of Super 35-only 50's so in that case you're not "cropping" anything at all. You're just shooting through a 50 and the entirety of its image circle lol.

Great review boys! I believe the reason for the audio being over there is for the sound person or A/C to have access to the controls while the camera op has access to all the image controls. Thoughts on that?
@mondobytes4 жыл бұрын
I think that anyone that can hire an audio person will have their own equipment to do it separately. I feel the onboard stuff is for solo operators which can be frustrating.
@dvdaltizer4 жыл бұрын
Armando Ferreira true true. One thing I noticed on the Venice is it had controls on the right and on the left! Something like that may be the best solution? Maybe canon is going for that high end cine market with the c500 cause most pro cine cameras have audio controls on the right hand side... but forgetting the single op people. C300mkiii has it on the right as well

A few details worth considering: 1. EIS performs exceptionally poorly in low light shooting situations in most cameras. I noticed you provided an example shot in broad daylight. Optical and mechanical, or a combination of the two provide far superior results generally speaking. 2. The reason you can get superior images when shooting above 800 ISO is because there is some image noise processing going on inside the camera. Some productions prefer to get the raw image and do all their noise reduction in post, thus the main reason why the Arri Alexa series of cameras only outputs the basic image without any in camera processing. What do you mean when you say you cannot record in 6K 10 Bit colour ? So what is the colour space with this camera when shooting in 6K then ? Is it only in RAW ? The images do look really fantastic however Armondo. 👍

Great video but I have to say that the c500 mk3 seriously needs a firmware upgrade that will add 2 very important features: 6k 10 bit codex and 120 fps. Considering that the less expensive cameras such as canon c70 and canon c300 mk3 both have the 120 fps feature - I don't think that should be a problem - as you mentioned in your video, 120 fps s35 sensor size is acceptable but full frame 120 fps would be amazing...and 6k raw in most cases is just overkill in terms of storage...6k xf avc or any other 10 bit codec is the way to go...if they add these 2 features in their next firmware upgrade I am sold...coming from an owner of 2 x canon c300 mk3 and an eos r5.

Only thing that bugs me about the C500 mkII is that the C300 mkIII arguably has a better sensor design (DGO), despite the higher resolution and Full Frame on the C500. Here's hoping we get a C500 mkIII!
@mondobytes3 жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t say it’s better, I’d still take the full frame sensor over the Super35 DGO.
@DaCarnival3 жыл бұрын
@@mondobytes I would too! But I just can't help thinking what if they made a full-frame DGO sensor... DGO is a big part of the Arri alexa mojo, and it seems a shame the flagship Canon camera doesn't feature it. And the C300 mkIII also has better 120p than the C500 mk II - just saying I wished it was more unequivocally the best Canon has to offer.
@mondobytes3 жыл бұрын
Me guess is that it requires an incredible amount of processing power to expose 2 images in 6K on a Full Frame sensor. Much easier to do on a Super35 sensor in 4K. The 120FPS does bother me a bit, that should be a firmware update fix

Where I don't need 6k as much and the 6K raw of it doesn't play back smoothly on my computer anyway, the missing 4k120 is def a deal breaker for me. I don't want to invest 17k into a camera that doesn't have that feature as I film a lot of athletes and sports. The 120p and even the 180p of the C300 is absolutely amazing! If you want the same focal length as 50mm on a smaller sensor like super35, then just use a 35mm lens, or 25mm if youre on micro 4/3. There is no difference in what they look like, so this shouldn't be a talking point (unless you want to get something insanely wide like fisheye style, which is super rare). Lower noise, better low light and shallower depth of field are some better talking points.
@mondobytes4 жыл бұрын
That’s not true, using a 35mm on a Super 35 and a 50mm on a full frame might give you a similar field of view but compression will be very different. I’ve done this before, not to mention there’s unique lenses that are not available in multiple focal ranges which limits Super35mm cameras in tighter environments.

I’m still not sure which card I prefer the look of.😅 The Hoodman has a cooler colour. The Sandisk is warmer. I think the Hoodman is sharper also. I’ve tried a few different SD usb card readers and they all look slightly different also. I’m trying different combos to settle on one workflow. People may think I’m seeing things, but I assure you, their are slight differences I can see and hear (audio wise) on different combos, without zooming in, that is at the normal 100%. I’m therefore certain that there is a difference between brands of cards. Even the brand of ssd that I store footage on makes a difference (Samsung, WD, Adata). During Covid, this has been fascinating to test. Bottom line, there are slight differences. It just depends on what one finds appealing.
