@@Ankataa Great job. However wouldn't it be better to keep only the Bambara subs (preferably in Latin script) and to let the viewer chose between EN and FR captions. Four subtitles is really too much.

Walayi! :-) So glad you like and that you're picking up some stuff. I love doing the transcript for that reason too! I took some notes on the interesting stuff and was thinking about writing it up at some point. Something like a commentary for the dedicated learners or linguists out there. Any interest if I found the time?

Getting change has perhaps always been a chore in BKO but it looks like the problem is getting worse... I'd never heard of change merchants before! Coleman, have you asked people what they see as the cause of the lack of small change in Bamako? I encountered the same shortage of small bills and coins during my Brazzaville fieldwork, and many Congolese people blamed immigrants from other African countries--they said immigrants hoarded it or even turned the coins into jewellery. That idea still seems so ridiculous to me, though perhaps not more so than gun-crazed Americans blaming our homicides on immigrants.

You know, during filming, no one drifted towards identifying an underlying cause other than those hinted at here. That said, I didn't ask specifically - might have to do a reboot episode in another city and reframe a question or two :-)

As PCVs we used to play cards for small change. A pot always felt way more valuable than its list price, just because of the added convenience of having exact change for the coming week. Occasionally we'd see change merchants merchants in BKO, but it sound's like everything's gotten harder. If it's that bad in Bamako these day, I imagine breaking a bill in village right now is pretty rough.
@Ankataa6 жыл бұрын
I never got in on any card games but I remember the jostling over of who got to pay for a group dinner in a restaurant and therefore collect all the other PCVs' small bills and change!

That's interesting about Brazzaville, Bruce. Yesterday I was visiting with a man from Zim who said that no one back in Zim buys anything these days except the total bare necessities and only if they have the exact amount worked out. If you overpay in USD or ZAR, you get a bond note back as change for a non-existent currency. The bond notes can then be signed over and used to pay for something else, but there's the USD/ZAR price for things and a bond note price, which is always double. But, yes, change in Mali is always an issue. Sometimes I'll pull out a 2000 XOF note to pay for a single hard-boiled egg just to joke with the seller ... there's always the look of horror and then relief when I have coins.

In 2014-2015, we were paying change merchants 10% fee for change (we needed 100 fcfa denominations).
