This. The whole video is great, but I *especially* appreciate Ramit's assessment of the 4th guy (20:33). Really highlights the difference between the way Ramit operates - respecting his audience and trying to help them- vs this other, way too common approach, where you just try to get people angry, embarrassed, and vengeful so they'll be amped up enough to buy whatever bullsh*t you're saying without thinking about it. My parents had this older gentleman that passed away next door to a property. in the neighbor's will, they wanted to offer the property for sale to my parents first before anyone else. His son went to a realtor and told my parents that they were getting offers of $150k for the property so that's the market price. My dad was ready to pay, but my mom is quite knowledgeable about properties so she said there's no way it was worth that much. She went to the public assessment records and checked that the property public records indicated the property was only worth I think 40-60k. Then they went back to the son and realtor and presented the evidence that it was nowhere near 150k and if someone else wanted to buy it they could. Then a few weeks later, they came back and cut a deal with my parents for 60k on the property.

If it was a bad video I assumed it would be to buy IULs or pitching a Real Estate course, "Just get CDs" was not on my list of possible bad advice... that's a new one. And then to get it wrong and be like these are great for emergency funds? I mean, no penalty CDs are good for emergency funds but a no penalty CD is really just a HYSA in disguise. Also for like "we are going to buy a house in 3 years" it could also make sense to use a CD. Me personally, I would just put that in a MM or HYSA and keep it liquid in case of an extended lob loss or something.

I really appreciate your channel Ramit. My family is a high income family. We earn over 300k a year but we're spending less than a third of that and putting everything else into savings and investments (which after taxes is around 50% of our pretax earnings). Probably no surprise but we both grew up in lower income families. My dad lost his job when I was a kid and my partner's dad passed away. So we're very fearful of an unexpected life event that could complete upend our lives. So many channels miss the psychological aspect of money. The good thing is that we have a house that's paid off and are well set up for retirement. Your channel has made me realize that we could be enjoying life so much more now and we're going way overboard for retirement savings even if we retire early at 55. It's going to take a big mindset shift but the first step was realizing that we're okay and can spend more now.

I think CDs are only useful in a very limited set of scenarios. You can use them if you have a scheduled, relatively large expense or purchase that you have to put money aside for that has not already been invested. For example, if you are intending to buy a car in a year and you want to put aside 10k specifically for that purchase, a 12 month CD can work. The issue is that CDs typically don't give you much more than a high interest savings account so the return you get for locking away your money is pretty minimal.

I defnitely agree with the comparison comment. We can definitely see the big houses, fancy cars, designer bags, but what we dont see is their bank acocunts, investments, credit card debt. and what I have learnt so far is, don't believe in everything you see. : live your own rich life. for me, it means renting (even though we have kids and pretty good salary, sending my kid to activities, good education , saving for retirement), I still own the same furniture I used to when I was single, buy thrift for kid and myself and am a kirkland girlie all the way. I just do not find value in showing off. My success, joy and money is for my family.

Very informative! Also, I 100% agreed, with your take on Grant Cardone. I wouldn’t trade my moral values for his either.

The CD video gives the same vibes as those posts that say “Don’t forget to put sugar in your gas tank to keep it from freezing in the winter” 😂

This is awesome advice for buying a car! I felt sooo taken advantage of when I bought my car last year, it was a horrible feeling and I will never go in person again until its time to sign for the car. Thank you!

Agreed about the car buying experience. I bought a car in 2019 and would only do business with the dealerships that were willing to give quotes online or over the phone. If they told me I had to come in person to get a quote, thank you next. I got multiple quotes and used them to negotiate a lower price from a dealership near me. I'm still happy with the car and continue to take care of it so I hopefully won't need to buy a new one for a very long time.

I like the Bruce Lee approach "Absorb what is useful, discard what is useless and add what is specifically your own". Look at the tiktocks and see the good and bad

Me and my husband have become regular watcher and are working our way through the book together - had to laugh when you talk about buying a car in Sacramento - I'm originally from Roseville and boy did I get taken on my first couple cars from Sacramento!!

Whenever we went to buy my wife's car, we split the shopping experience into 2 parts: exploration, then research and purchase. In part one, we just went to several different dealerships, in fact some of them were extremely overpriced. She got a chance to test-drive several cars, figure out the brand and model she wanted, so she is happy with it. For part 2, I told her that I will find her the car at a good price. I went through and ran all the numbers on trade-in, any add-ons, etc. Then I start calling and emailing dealers in our area to see what they had and at what price. It took couple week, but we found her the exact car she wanted at a reasonable price and we were even able to get extra couple grand on her trade-in.

Agree. Telling people to never test drive a vehicle is crazy.

The dealership thing is true. The last car i bought there, the finance guy almost wanted to cuss me out. I said thank you, have a good day and he didn't even answer 😂

The “Gall” for Grant to actually believe that Black people know “who he is” because he and his team talk “street vocabulary has Got to be ONE of the MOST ignorant statements ever made and I feel sorry for his children who are learning this from him

The other problem with savings accounts is that the earnings are taxed while the compounding in stocks is untaxed until you sell. The continuous tax is a massive drag on wealth creation.
