We're never happy with what we have. But excessive consumption is damaging our planet. Could greed lead to the collapse of the climate as well as our society? Find out in Part 2 of GREED - A FATAL DESIRE.
From Buddhists and bankers to Eskimos and psychologists, we explore the phenomenon of greed with people from all walks of life. How can it be defined? What makes us greedy? And what are the repercussions?
People like to have a lot of stuff because it gives them the feeling of living forever," says American social psychologist Sheldon Solomon. He thinks we have to come to terms with our own mortality before we can break the cycle.
Are there other ways to feel happy and content? Can we simply stop being greedy by changing the way we think?

the universe doesnt need us, billions of temporary sufferers. we just breed and put more misery onto the planet and for what? we're bacteria in a bottle and we're consuming it all. it's a good thing it's all coming to an end, when we make life impossible there cannot be anymore suffering, I applaud it. if greed brings it on faster I'll go to the shop and buy something I don't need. now go look at your 'award'. are you greedy for more 'awards' now?

I can't shake the feeling that Philip is the embodiment of what this documentary is about. He talks about hard work, respect and fairness towards others but he has a closet full of shoes he is never going to wear and displays his philanthropy awards like some kind of badge to feed his ego and justify his never-ending hunger for more "stuff". I feel that is the worst kind of greed, the one you feel justified in perpetuating...

Eh, that ain't really true. It does to some extent, but not for us because we elvoved more than we were supposed to in terms of like all the stuff we can create so if nature predicted agriculture, buildings and technology we'd be far more empathic, far more carefull to what we do to other life and then yeah things would work out but since nature didin't predict anymore than us building basic tools, basic weapons (like stone hatchet and crossbow maybe), hunt animals, collect fruits, maybe create some art through music (with very basic instruments) and cave drawings... I'm pretty sure that's the case.

I guess but as a teenager, you see the adults fretting, stressing over bills, pssed off, and think 'whatevers going to happen will, you can only worry so much when most thing are far out of your control anyway' (or at least I did). Just because things may go the way a person planned or schemed, it could just as easily fall apart. I would auit being an adult is doing your best, but accepting the universe is indifferent to your fate

An economic parasite would love a host to believe what is said. No. Ppl have more than myself due to the intellectual property theft & attempts at defamation of my character. What sustain myself should sustain myself, not parceled out to everyone else. And have to have ongoing resources to sustain myself, how can I when ppl continue to siphon my resources including my intellect. No reason why I should be struggling and haggling in my country welfare office. Why Im leaving my country. Im annoyed by blues and reds. both are attempting to drain myself of my wealth then attempt to offer trinkets. No. Restitution from intellectual property theft and attempts of defamation of my character is in order. Ive given far more than what Ive recieved and demanding what is owed isnt being greedy.

A few years back I realized that not only are the people who provide the food I eat; the pickers, sowers, packers, perhaps even up to truckers are paid slave wages. They can’t make enough for a two week vacation, dental, in too many cases, their own homes. And I’m not just talking about the immigrants who may have picked yesterday them deported today; so many American farmers, of all ethnicities, are also hungry. Some American pickers don’t have homes. Far too many of them convinced to vote against their own interests; supporting low taxes on the rich, the constant attacks on medicare, affordable housing or rent control - or they are working too hard or long to vote at all, which is Not their fault… I send these nameless people prayers everyday and talk about them often to anyone who eats. The least we can do is offer best wishes or send a prayer, the most is learn how to make changes locally. To say poor people who live with other poor people don’t experience depression, was a naive statement I trust the speaker no longer agrees with. So grateful for this film!

I found the Tibetan Buddhist monk along with the American sociologist professor among the most enlightening subjects within the film. It has been my own experience that coming to terms with the concept of "enough" did not truly begin to mature within me until i was near 50 years old. I wish I had come to this realization earlier. My wish for my children is that they receive the gift of satisfaction and joy earlier in life. That way they will have that sense of enjoyment for a longer duration.

The man cited God’s commandment to take dominion of the Earth as authority to revel in material riches. What he doesn’t reference are the rebukes of Christ in the temple by the money exchangers, nor the questioning of the rich young ruler in where his allegiance lies (give away your possessions and follow me) nor Matthew 6:24 that states you cannot serve two masters (God and money). The man espouses prosperity gospel heresy. Absolutely heretical and one of the many reasons that hardens the hearts of unbelievers towards Christ.

@Rouge Thanks for your answer. I would though disagree as the very word "e-motion" implies motion, movement hence it cannot be static. But yes, you are right in saying that happiness is in general a turbulent state of mind containing excitement, agitation and sometimes irrationality while peace of mind is a calm, quiet, content, " static" state of mind. When muslims great each other with "As salaam aleikum", they wish each other to find peace of mind, a state of mind full of calmness and content. They do not wish each other "happiness". And its similar with other religions. Yet most of those preaching peace of mind are in fact searching for happiness and joy that comes from wealth, comfort, good food and good sex. My point was that happiness gives meaning to peoples life no matter what they might proclaim otherwise.

What a lovely documentary! Taught me a few things I didn't know and have to really think about! I am a doctor, specialist anesthesiologist, in South Africa, and DEEPLY unhappy in my job. I don't know how to escape this unhappiness, because I literally can't do anything else! After 15 years at university, I can't even go and drive a trash truck, because I don't have a code 14 drivers license!! I can't just pack up and go, because I own a modest home, car and don't live above my means! I haven't had a holiday in years, because I can't afford not to work for even a day. The almighty dollar is unfortunately king, without it you're screwed, so although I would LOVE to simply disappear and live off the land, it's impossible. I owe too much to all sorts of institutions and can't afford to buy land to live off!!

Perhaps, it is not as prestigious and you will be heavily judged by your family/ peers, but you could try teaching English abroad for just a year or two with your family. It won't be easy to up and leave but you could pay off debt etc in two years and have up to 2 months paid holiday a year. Reduced education for kids etc. After that, you could always go back to being an anesthesiologist. I am a South African btw and have taught overseas for a while now, it is not prestigious but it is an " easy' life Hope it all works out

Just watched both episodes and realised that, since this documentary was made, the world has entered an even more perilous phase. It made for a very intense viewing experience which has had quite a profound effect on me. I had, till recently always assumed power was the problem dogging mankind, now my mind has been changed to recognise that before the lust for power, was the greed. It's hard being human and it's hard being alive but mortal. Death is frightening, but it's also a release, and also a possibility that you may meet loved ones passed over. The scariest thing for me, has always been life, and here lies the problem. We are too fearful of life to experience it without multiple psychological crutches, but fearful too of not existing. What can you do.

This is my second comment on the 2/2 documentary: No need to meet any Guru/Teacher to understand what is Greed or any other issues haunting human being. Because, if we can learn from our daily experiences and change , then you yourself become a Guru for your self. According to Hindu Philosophy ( not religion) , God /Guru is in you. This means when ever you go against nature, you will have to pay a price for it in terms of pain, depression etc. You realise it through your daily experience, but you do not want change. If you want to really seek happiness and not pleasure then you listen to your GURU who is inside you. You can purchase pleasure but not happiness.

But even that seems too much to ask. I don't want a car, I don't want vacations, I don't travel, I don't go to restaurants, my clothes are years old, many more than a decade, I don't drink alcohol, I don' t smoke. I made my "Abitur", I am a "Facharbeiter" with good employer' s references, I do voluntary work. I cleaned toilettes and worked as kitchen help, cleaner and garden helper. And still people with more money begrudge me ever cent, because I get my money "doing nothing" as a H4-person. The more people own, the more they seem to feel the need to put others down.

I am 33. A few years ago, I started reading philosophy and psychology, not as a formal student, but as something I needed in life. Over the years since then, life has made a lot of sense. What I learnt is that in the end, there is nearly no "true benefit" (if I could use that phrase) with self-absorption and the drive to focus life on "ever-increasing material goodness of oneself". As far as we get basics to go by, more is simply a prison and an illusion. If we ceased to think of "oneself" all the time and began to think of "others" (being of goodness and help to others), we would have achieved true benefit to others.
