In today’s episode of Figuring Out, we have Dinesh Thakkar in conversation with Raj Shamani. He is the managing director of Angel One which is a Fintech company providing broking services, margin trading facilities, research services, depository services, investment education, and financial products distribution to its clients.
In this episode, we started talking about his journey of starting Angel One from scratch, and how he took 1.5cr-2crs from his friends, and how their investment has turned into 100s of crores. He also shared how Harshad Mehta's scam affected the market and how he came out of it. He then shared how his company is growing around 80-85% consumer base every year and how much profits they make. We discussed what went wrong in Paytm, what is the new generation investing in, and three tips that he would like to give any young person who is just starting their investment journey.
Towards the end, we talked about the mistakes people make while investing and what are the things they should avoid. We then talked about why he became the associate partner in IPL and what is his strategy or thought process behind it. Then we talked about the different prices of various collaborations in IPL and how he never invested in equity himself. We ended our conversation by talking about his car collection. People dont understand that the prices of things are never going back down. This inflation is deeper than we think. Those buying groceries are well aware that the real inflation is much over 10%. The increments dont match our income, yet certain investors still earn over $365,000 in stocks and assets. Wish I could accomplish that.

Dividend yield of many good stocks in India is far better than the rental yield of properties even in metros like Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi NCR. Also the liquidity is much higher in case of equity products (direct stocks, MF's) compared to Real Estate. Hence there is no better substitute other than equity in Indian Market. Even the worst performing long term equity MF has delivered a CAGR of more than 13% in the last 30 year period!

Have started watching podcasts on your channel from around one month and it feels like learning something good adding value to life. Being a pharmacist I would like to say in today's world the intake of medicines is more than food. Considering it if possible can you invite any guest from pharma industry to reveal some information about medications today being used. Few questions can be covered such as is intake of medicine for longer duration safe. All the medicines available in market are of good quality. Are medicines prepared in such a way that it will cure your one problem and cause another side effect.
