KEY, TO NOT GETTING KILLED ON A SCOOTER: 1. Speed kills, driving 10mph MAX always, is safe. 2. Yield yield yield... Always yield to other drivers. 3. OLD AGE, Drastically affects your reaction times.

@@edic2619 I came over to this video that Paul did because I had a particular interest in listening to what he had to say about owning both motorcycles and cars in the Philippines. I just happened to look down at your comment because it was near the top. 1. Speed kills, yes. Driving 10mph MAX all of the time is ridiculous and in the Philippines an excellent way to get run over....for sure. 2. Always yielding to other drivers in the Philippines means that you will never get anywhere, you may as well bring a lunch for the trip on the way even if you are going a short distance. On the other hand strategically yielding will save your ass and knowing when to impose yourself and take control of your space helps greatly in terms of getting to your destination sooner rather than later. I have VERY loud horns on all of my vehicles here in the Philippines. Loud to the extent that I can and do literally blast the other idiot drivers out of my lane and space. Somehow and strangely enough (you would have to experience it to appreciate it), Filipinos often times lose their minds when they sit behind the controls of a vehicle. It is a generational thing, there has been no traffic law(s) enforcement here for decades. 3. Old age does affect reaction times, yes, and it is on an individual case by case basis. It is not a matter of [once you hit a certain age you are no longer capable]. It doesn't work that way but your words regarding age do ring true at some point. At some point everybody has to give up trying to operate a motor vehicle on a public thoroughfare. I love it and I have been doing it since I was twelve but I have been giving serious contemplation to parking my motorcycle. The Philippines is the wild west in every way when it comes to navigating the public thoroughfares.

Here in Vietnam, Honda changed the name from 150 to 160 but kept the exact same 157cc engine. If you look at the bottom left of your adv 150 engine case, it's probably stamped 157.

Hi Paul. Im from Germany and I used to live in the Davao del Sur region (Digos City) for 6 years and 1 year on Negros (Silay City), near Bacolod. I used to be a professional Truck Driver all over Europe for more than 30 years and over 6 Million km without accident. I drove on plain Ice, snow, heat, rainstorms, hurricanlike winds and fog with visibilities of just a few meters. Im really a passionate driver, but when I came to the Philippines, one of the first things I decided was - I will NOT drive any vehicle here. Not because I was afraid of the traffic. I was afraid to end up in jail within 2 Month because I would beat someone up the way they drive.... Im usually a very calm person, but I figured out that even my patience has limits.

Your safety concerns are completely understandable, and it's admirable that you prioritize your well-being and the law. I appreciate your engagement on this topic!

When I got to the Philippines a year ago, the traffic was daunting, especially with very few traffic lights. I used the trike/taxis for 6 months. Once we bought our little farm, we needed our own transportation. I bought a Tuk Tuk because of its versatility and value. It gets a little over 50mpg and is easy to maintain. It carries lots of supplies. So the Tuk Tuk gave me the best combination of attributes.

I move to Bohol in July 2024. I was torn between a Click 160, or an ADV 160. I'm going to get the ADV 160. It costs a lot more than the Click 160, and has no floor board for groceries. But it has a much larger under seat storage area, and ABS brakes, and better suspension, and way better on rough roads, and better balance because it has no grocery board/foot board. It has real handlebars that you can mount your phone to. I'll add a 45l top box to it and be happy. If I had gotten the Click 160 I could pay to upgrade the suspension, but all the other down sides would stay the same.

Hi Paul.thankyou...great informative video..been here in the Philippines for 5 weeks ..island hopping from Cebu to Negros to Panay and Boracay..coming from Australia and used to driving on the left the change to driving on the right was hard enough but do able.. but as you have explained the greatest challenge l have found is the Philippine road conditions...yes..street dogs, dodging potholes, trucks and buses drive their own rules..then more importantly children and dumb ass pedestrians.. challenging it has been and far more tiring because of the 100% full on concentration needed.. travelling times are far longer..but saying this..whether you travel by motor bike or car travelling independently is by far the most interesting and enjoyable experience..l would agree you have the best bikes and also your small car are ideal choices for the Phillipines ..safe travels.

Good points, good "not advice". Being "various crazy people" I really appreciate your vlog. The Foreign Ministry of Norway recommends safety as the number 1 priority when driving in the PI. They recommend the car, preferably a modern one with high active and passive safety. Having experienced getting injured rather badly on a scooter before, the car is it for me. I will not consider even testing a scooter in the PI. Then again, I find it rather easy to drive a car there, as long as I maintain sharp attention to the traffic.

Good information. We lived in Mabalacat and moved to San Antonio Zambales. The traffic around Angeles and Dau kept me from buying a two wheeler. I bought a 125 Honda TMX and a sidecar here but it's almost as wide as our Honda Civic so I'm driving the car and selling the trike. At 73 I'm not comfortable risking injury to save a few bucks on gas. Maintenance on a used car is expensive but we can't afford a new one.

Another option is repo’s, I bought my 2014 Hyundai Accent from BDO in 2015. At the time a new 2015 Accent listed at 698,000, I purchased the 2014 for 390,000, it had less than 10k on it, was still under warranty, it has been very reliable for almost 8 years. I live in Bacolod, our little town is 630,000 people with virtually no traffic law enforcement. Filipino’s drive with no worry of repercussions because basically there are none. In 8 years of driving with a little more than 100,000km’s only one accident, a Carabao took offense with my car and gored my right rear tire. That being said, driving here requires your head be on swivel. I truly believe driving keeps me young, I’ll be 68 this year and don’t see myself slowing down.

I went with a Bajaj 3 wheeler for my first motor vehicle in Pinas. Handling took a bit of getting used to, as the small, bias ply tires will follow imperfections in the pavement. Pros are: Decent fuel economy Cage for protection vs bikes, Lower center of gravity Lots of room for passengers and groceries ( i added a roof rack) Cons: I had to alter the top so i could see properly A tad under powered, especially with a load, though a bigger ,250cc( vs 200cc) engine is now available Parking is more difficult than a bike For my first " full sized" vehicle, I have decided on a Mahindra Enforcer. Well under 1,000,000php Mitsubishi diesel power 4 door pickup available Option of 2, or 4 wheel drive Plus, like the Jeep it resembles, no problems with having to crouch to look out the windshield, and side windows! One negative ( at least for some), is that I don't think an automatic is available..., But a hydraulic clutch is a wonderful thing...

Good evening, Paul (and watchers). I bought a new Bajaj Maxima last March. It's been trouble free and provides me with shelter from the rain and sun. It's not as enjoyable to drive as the HD I sold before coming here. It's top speed on flat ground with 2 passengers is 70 kph. I've carried as many as 4 adults and two children, plus myself and it will climb pretty steep grades although downshifting is required. Much of the time I'd prefer 2 wheels but there is ample room for a family and a great grocery-getter. I Island hopped with it to Leyte and Samar. It gets 26 kpl. If anyone has any questions about it I'm happy to advise. Thanks for another good video.

When I was in Bohol the GFs neighbor loaned us their MIO 125 scooter. It was OK, but I found it to be too small and not easy to ride. The town that I was in is up a steep, winding mountain road. Quite a few portrions of this cement road was busted up, and badly eroded , so the scooter wheels had a tough time navigating those portions, even going very slowly. I actually went down as you mentioned Paul. The road was wet, the front tire was trying to go thru this rough patch, the wheel hit a one of the cement rocks and before I knew it the handlebars turned all the way to the right and we were down on the ground. Luckily we were only going a bit faster than a walking pace so just had some bruises and scrapes. I will not be buying a scooter. I will get a 500cc motorcycle. I found the scooter does not ride, nor handle like a motorcycle. I have been riding big motorcycles for 28 years and find the scooters just too small and underpowered. Just speaking for myself. 😉

@@accessibleglobetv6995 Me too. The MIO going down the mountain road would not engine brake at all. You had to ride the brakes the entire way down the mountain, if you let go of the brakes you started gaining a lot of speed. That MIO must go through a lot of brake pads. 😅 Having a manual transmission is better in that I can put it in second or even first gear to control my decent down a steep road. Or drop down a gear when going uphill to make sure I have enough power to go up.

Thanks Paul!!! Was a very helpful informal vidio. I could see the scooters would be best far as parking + getting around in traffic and economy!!!!! I'm 68 like you, but I take a lot of meds so I don't trust my balance. Not to long ago I had a CanAm Spyder. It's a three wheeler but the two tires are in the front. About 60" wide and100+ long. Has reverse, stereo, all the bells and whistles. $26,000.00 dollars. Had guys that road Harley's that couldn't wreck it!!!!!! Didn't have to worry about balance, 999cc. You could do 100mph and still have another gear to go!!! Handled like a dream.........had back surgery!!!! Had to sell it financially!!!!! Brought tears to my eyes watching gone down the road when I sold it....... Any it was spendy, but I think it would've been great in the Philippines. Sorry got carried away on my story. Thank you for all that you do for everyone, the information you're a big help!!!!!!! Thanks Paul

All I can say is a Honda Click is a great bike to get around. Plenty of storage under the seat too. The biggest problem about any bike is getting hit or taking a fall. You don't heal as quick when you get older. That's why I parked my Honda Click and started driving a Toyota Yaris. A motorcycle will never win against a car no matter how right you were while driving. In rain, slippery roads, why get wet? Buy a car and be safe.

I would love a good walk around of that car of yours. It's what my wife would like us to get. Presently we have a multi cab van. Its narrow fairly easy to park and has just enough ground clearance to get down all but the worse roads. We had a Toyota Carolla but it just did not have the ground clearance needed for living in the province like we do. I plan on keeping the van (mainly for family transportation) may get a car like yours for longer drives with just me the wife and our son, but also plan on getting a bike for myself a 200cc+ since I am 6'2" and 260lbs. I also had an 1100cc bike for years in the states before I moved but that size is just to much for here.

I grew up in the states and am an oversized Filipino. When I was younger, I rode bikes up and down PCH. Slept on park benches and picnic tables during those trips. The motorbike scene in the philippines is off the hook and have been wanting to do an island loop while there but never had the opportunity. The times I’ve been there and rented out a motorbike the largest model available were 125s. I’m 6’1” 225lbs. This size is not very comfortable for me so I refrain from making longer than 40 minute rides. Smaller vehicles are definitely better options there. Did you ride motorcycles here in the US? Thank you for the very informative video.

I'm an avid motorcycle rider for over 40 years and have three big bikes ranging from a Honda 919 cc sport bike, 1340 cc Harley Road King and a Spyder F3 three-wheeler 1330cc in Southern California. When in the USA I only ride when it's nice weather and don't enjoy riding in the rain at all. I am seeing way too many accidents on a regular basis with expats in the Philippines and don't want to end up hurt. So, I will be buying a car, truck or van when I get to Philippines in July. I plan part-time living in PH and will just leave the vehicle with family or friends to use while I'm gone or just let it sit if possible. Out of them all I like a van the best and that is what I drive in the USA daily.

After a couple different countries and literally buying and giving away motorcycles, I really hate scooters. My mistake was liking motorcycles and buying them when I may not be living there long-term. 1 brand new Honda MSX went to my Thai girlfriend, which I knew may end up as a gift, twenty $200 worth. I just chalk it up as experience and the price of having real transportation. Buying used can just be a headache and it's surprising how little availability there is in a used machine especially an actual motorcycle. Currently I own two or three bikes in the US, and have been riding BMW. You will find that buying a bike is nothing like in the US, and is a little surprising how difficult it is just to go shopping, whereas brand-new that is simple and and expensive though I have rented a couple of scooters I've also rented a couple of really beat down old Honda or Yamaha motorcycles. Despite there being a few million scooters that all look the same that are all very reliable I can't stand them and they're the most impractical thing to be riding around in Asia just due to the fact they are a street machine they are not well design for any kind of off-road or even when it rains. I don't recommend them because they handle like crap they always bottom out and if they're used there going to be beaten down and simply Hammer you to pieces. Most used machines are beaten up and never have seen any maintenance, such as brakes or anyting else that is normal as far as four-wheeled vehicles I really recommend what fits your style but the multicab Suzuki is really pretty good for Simplicity, and it will haul all the relatives as well as building supplies and comes in all different configurations, maybe even working air conditioning. Just watch out for stuff that is been made over rebuilt because it can look so good but hidden issues likely the next time I will choose a Honda CRF 300 that is a really good on off-road and we'll ride smoothly with actual suspension, compared to the four and a half inch scooter Springs. Definitely don't go out and buy something the first 6 months or a year like I did I knew the cost I knew eventually I would be out of that money but that's just the cost of having real transportation, and I really hate riding a bus I don't ride jeepneys and the tricycles are good way to Rattle your brain, as well as eating a lot of exhaust pollution. Most rental places do not even offer an actual motorcycle, or if they do it is a pretty pathetic example. Thinking you're going to buy a Harley or something of that nature is pretty far from reality it would actually be easier to find a used BMW, and that is the choice of the Cambodian police officers, their exclusive biker club that rides like wild Banshees with a death wish most likely way to end up in the hospital or dead is with a scooter, I must add a lot of foreigners have a death wish and buy sport bikes, and the tendency is to get all drunk and stupid and suicidal Behavior, do not ever drink and ride motorcycles, helmets will definitely save you.

How about a bulldozer? Another option is the Suzuki Multicabs which are a pretty good deal, you can pick one up for about 250k or so and come in many versions which will affect the price. I personally have the 4x4 mini truck version as I live in the hills in Bohol and need it to get up and down our roads here as they are only partially paved. They are small so makes it easy to park in the city as well.

Always a good video when you share your knowledge Paul! We are moving over there shortly and we need a small van for getting the wheelchair, camera gear around and something accessible. I've had many bikes over the years 14 or so, and I'll be hunting down a Kawasaki KLX300 with a pack rack on the rear "pretty much the bike for everything" I can go where I want and it is bigger than a scooter but I'm not a small bloke either!. I'm thinking it'll be very ideal for my situation. I did laugh about the glasses comment because I too have glasses. Bikes, scooters are very ideal over there but 100% if the rain is out - I'll be sticking to 4 wheels and just sucking it up. Anytime I can I'll be on 2 wheels and the number one rule is on 2 wheels...EVERYTHING and EVERYONE is out to get you! Stay safe mate!

I had a Click 125 in Luzon, and rode all over the place. We rode 2 up with the top box, under seat, and floor board full of stuff up the mountains. it wouldn't go past 35 kmph on a steep climb, but it got us to where we needed to go. A fairly large individual on a 150 would be fine. I got the 125 up to 110 kmph on the highway several times. 🤫

It will take me a while yo figure it out Paul. I use a motorcycle as my primary transportation here in the states and it is a 900lb Harley Electra Glide and I weigh around 240lbs. It’s going to be tough and I will feel silly as hell on a tiny scooter 🤣🤣

Hi Paul thanks for the video. A lot of practical advice. Being in Lapu-Lapu City most of my day to day travel can be done on foot Jeepney or tricycle however this will change when we move into our new place. Because of our needs, I was looking at buying a scooter for day to day local commutes. I will also require some form of small car or a multi cab. I'm leaning towards a small 4x4, such as a Suzuki Jimmy or early model Kia sportage. I'm taking this approach due to the poor roads and ground clearance.

Hello Paul! You mentioned your hesitation with getting a box installed on your ADV, and I can understand. It’s a bit expensive and bulky, though they are tough and roomy. Have you considered getting a tail bag that just straps onto the rear seat? It’s not as roomy or secure as the box, but they’re so much cheaper and require no brackets and can be popped on and off in seconds. Good enough for some groceries or something. I use one on my large bike and it even fit fine on my old small sporty bike with a tiny back seat. I’m a light packer and have been able to fit a weekend trip for myself with that thing. My was branded, but I’ve seen off brand ones that look just as good or better for cheap. They usually have a zipper along the middle to expand them more. Your ADV seat is quite large and could easily accommodate a larger one of these. Just a thought since I’ve found mine invaluable. I hate backpacks and don’t want to spend the money on properly installed cumbersome luggage. 🤙

hi Paul, love this video. looks like you have the best of both worlds. the perfect bikes for you and Mae and a car for the weather. when I get there, I plan on buying a mitsubishi strada for my transportation. I'm a truck lover and almost always drive one most of my life. I used to ride motorcycles when I was younger until I blew my back out. Haven't been on one for over 30 years. I'm now 73, so riding a bike there would be very stressful in the busy traffic of the cities, but I still might get a small one like yours or Mae's with the floorboard. If I get a bike, I'll buy the skull helmet, I want to be able to see and hear all around me. when using a full helmet, I find you have blind spots. I'm hoping to pull the trigger sometime this year. Not getting any younger. I don't have much cash, so I'll have to be smart in my planning. perhaps, if I can get there, I'll buy you a cup of coffee.

I am in Santa Rosa Laguna about 40 minutes drive from Manila. Been here nearly 10 years and in the first two years got around everywhere on trikes. In year 3 we got a car and much preferred. We currently have 3 cars 2 we own and the third a client left with us when they went back to Malaysia due to Covid. No idea if they are coming back lol.

Those scooters get over 100 miles per gallon. My girlfriend has a multi cab so I use that most of the time instead of my honda 160 but I still love the Honda. I’m going back to the United States at the end of March to sell things, when I get back I plan to buy a good car.

I can’t see, personally, negotiating PH traffic in any fashion. My approach would be to pick a homebase within walking distance to everything I’d need. For anything farther away, or on a rainy day, I’d be more than happy to hire an occasional GRAB. Long term, this set-up seems the cheapest and least risky, injury wise. My strategy might not work for someone living a bit out of town, but we’re planning to be based in Cebu City, nearer the better hospitals. The occasional GRAB/taxi/jeepney is still going to be cheaper than any of the options that you lay out. It’s an option that you didn’t even mention. I thought I’d mention it.

I've got my eye on a CFMoto/ZEEHO AE8 electric scooter. The lithium batteries give it a 190km range, cruise control, and is as powerful as a 250cc. It's got the floorboard for groceries, and good ground clearance. The price starts at 209,800PHP.

Yeah, a 3 wheeler, and in this case we're not talking about a tricycle that Filipinos uses, but a 3 wheeled vehicle to me seems the worst of all worlds for the PH. No protection from the rain, and the rainy season can be BAD like it was last year where our property is where every day for a few weeks it rained for some time period and some days it just dumped most the day. I don't think they'd be good for dealing with all the dirt roads, and those big ditches, etc.... and they don't have the ease of movement like a scooter. I don't see them where we are. People mostly have motorcycles with plenty of clearance. Then they pay someone to build the sidecar to make it a tricycle, and it can be for different function. My wife's brother put a sidecar on for hauling animals, and of course people can get in there too, and you can haul stuff in it.

As I understand it, the national speed limit is 80kph(~48mph); not sure about in town. 2) Do you have access to weather radar on phone or laptop? A doppler facility up north might/should cover most of the country.

Good info, but I have to say, It's not the bike it's the rider, I've been riding MC for a little over 50 years, everything from a Honda 90, to a Harley Davidson. Here in the Philippines I bought a Mio i 125, and you should see some of the roads I've rode on here, (with my wife}, no problems, we have even toured with it with friends who have bigger bikes, and we kept up, even going up hills. For me the Mio is a good all around scooter. My opinion, it depends on how experienced you are riding, but I do agree, if your a big/tall person you should consider something bigger.

I don't have much to say about your review of the various vehicles. I have rented small scooters and various cars. I have ended up buying an N-Max which is a 155cc (I am 67 years old). And why then? Because a car is expensive to own and drive around compared to a scooter. I have chosen a half-sized scooter because of comfort and engine power; and it does not disappoint. I have ordered a top box and side boxes so that I could carry gear with me. Among other things. rain clothes. So I have the attitude to take it easy. If it rains, and it certainly can in quantities that are unbelievable, I take it easy. There are very few days when I absolutely have to do something that cannot be postponed. I find that a car in the center of Dumaguete is troublesome. It is slow and considerably more difficult to find a parking space. Much easier with a scooter. So my bottom line is a scooter big enough to pull me up the mountain. Then I take it easy when it really rains.
