Hey there! In this video, I want to share with you all the expenses I accrued for a span of one month using my first ever Ph.D. salary in the Netherlands. Just a note: expenses included here may differ for the next few months. I just thought it would be a great challenge to keep track of all my expenses and see roughly how much it would cost me in my day-to-day life.

Thank you very much for your cool video, but can't you make more by doing sub-phd works like: freelance jobs, on-campus job as handling lectures or tutorials? Thank you very much for your answer in advance

Hi, could you share about 30%tax ruling criteria? From the details you shared in video, it looks like your salary doesn't include this advantage?
@havesciencewilltravel
@havesciencewilltravel 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! Briefly, 30% tax ruling is a tax break given to internationally-recruited employees (30% of your gross income is note included in the "taxed" wage). And you are correct, I am not eligible for this. My master's university in Germany is within the 150 km distance from a Dutch border which disqualifies me, unfortunately.

Hi, thanks for information. I am close to finish my master thesis by next month in Germany. I got PhD in Netherlands and want to know how long did it take for you to get all procedure after you got acceptance? Do we need to submit master diploma certificate before joining or we can submit in some time after joining?
@havesciencewilltravel
@havesciencewilltravel 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! Depending on your institution, the process can definitely vary. For me, I applied during my second semester of my master's and was offered the position. With my expected start date of September, the HR department of my institution started all paperwork in March (which for them was also too early). By July they started applying for the residency permit. So for me, by September, I just bought a train ticket and moved here.

Per your master diploma, my lab allowed me to join without it. I was still writing my thesis when I moved to the Netherlands. However, you OFFICIALLY need it to enroll in a university that will award your degree. I am now provisionally enrolled since I just sent them a copy of my transcript, this allows me to enroll in classes now. I am just waiting for my diploma now.

Hi, Thank you for sharing the info. I do have a question related to health insurance. I have just finished my master from Germany and will be moving to Netherland for my PhD. What would you suggest in case of health insurance?
@havesciencewilltravel
@havesciencewilltravel 3 жыл бұрын
Hey there! Congratulations! I am pretty sure you will love it here. The first thing I would in your case is to contact the HR department of your institute. Most likely, they have an agreement with a health insurance company that will give you a few percent discounts. The next thing is to use a comparison website like zorgwijzer(dot)nl. Here you can compare prices and coverage. Finally, once you pick a company, there will also be more choices on what coverage you want.

Do you get holidays to comeback home for few weeks once in a year?
@havesciencewilltravel
@havesciencewilltravel 3 жыл бұрын
Hey! Yes, I think on average we get about 3-4 weeks holiday a year. I joined in October and by the end of the year, I have about 6 days. I plan to use them once traveling is an option again.

Hi, is your salary not deducted by tax?
@havesciencewilltravel
@havesciencewilltravel 3 жыл бұрын
It is -- the money I used in the video is the money after taxes are deducted. However, the salary table was pre-tax. All taxes are taken out at work, so you don't need to worry about it (this is what I know so far, consult the tax dept for official info).

So I can send my family about 500 € a month without cutting technology, food, clothing and entertainment right?
@havesciencewilltravel
@havesciencewilltravel 3 жыл бұрын
Of course, that depends on your personal living cost. As I mentioned, this is my first month's expense, and that my rent for my first year is way below the city's average.
