This New Jersey Historical Commission Black History Month 2024 program explores the lives of early Black women entrepreneurs and community leaders in New Jersey.
Despite almost insurmountable odds, Black women, only a few decades out of slavery, established companies, banks, and shelters for Black girls and women. Hear the stories of these remarkable women who worked to protect their communities.
This virtual panel on February 22, 2024 was introduced by the executive director of the New Jersey Historical Commission, Sara Cureton. It was moderated by the Director of our African American History Program, Noelle Lorraine Williams, scholars Betty Holloway of the Montclair African American Heritage Foundation Subcommittee on History and Dr. George Robb, professor emeritus at William Paterson University will explore the lives of early Black women entrepreneurs and community leaders in New Jersey.
