I love sealed product. Not as a form of investment but as a long term form of entertainment. Yes Legends and Urza's block are out of my price range but Tempest and Visions aren't, Mirrodin and Zendikar and Innistrad aren't. It isn't about recuperating a loss, it's about having fun with my friends who I used to draft with in the late 90s. In 2043 ill be in my 50s and guess what? I'll still have some of these sealed boxes getting ready for an Apocalypse draft, or Ravnica block draft or a Homelands-Dragons Maze-Fallen Empires-Prophecy pain draft. Baby I'm ready to crack some packs, smoke some blunts and slowly drift into senility. Forget the market noise, pick up the products you like and enjoy them with the people you love because ultimately that's what matters.

@@monkey39128 Understood. Well think about this, in the past 20-30 years, there is MTG and Pokemon who have stood the test of time, Yugioh too. Everybody else either died or is a tiny tiny player. Its like Coke and Pepsi, lots of other colas out there, many no longer made, those that are left, tiny regional players. Right now Cokemon is taking share from Pepsi, both will still be around in 20 years, but one will be much larger than the other. Demand is what creates the secondary market and drives it. MTG secondary is dying and will end up like the secondary Pez market. BTW there is a cool movie/docu about the Pez market. Another point to consider, MTG adds hundreds of millions of merch to the pile every year. So if you wait 5-10 years for a rebound, at that point, the market cap has significantly grown in price, even at the lower prices in the market, and now you need a pandemic level type influx to have enough people with enough money to start sucking up the supply to create the demand, problem is, there is now so much more product in the market place, and lots more money needed as a whole. Another pandemic and free government money would potentially do it for MTG. Short of that, maybe aliens arriving and wanting to trade diamonds and gold for MTG cards.

I honestly don't know about that Rudy. I bought ZNR set boxes for $99.97 in April of 2021.and they are at $92.24 shipped as of today 12/31/23. Commander legends for $112 it's at $140 (so good on that one). CRU unlimited for $121, its now $75. WTR for $61 it's now $69 (so again not bad). Tales of Aria first ed, for $80 and it's now $62. So this is not just a 6 month, 1 year or 2 year hold. Some of this stuff is coming up on 3 years with almost -10%. Some of the best I have would have to be core 2021 because I got a case for like $60 or $70 a box from that one "sports and some extra stuff" shop. I was going to say Commander 2018, but that has tanked from $280 to now $170. It is still fun to collect and look at, but I don't even know if any of this stuff will double in value even after 10 years.

Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate Rudy. However, I don’t think he grasps the irony of being critical of Hasbro and other TCG’s “over-printing” when people like him enable it. Buying $3 million of Pokémon products to hoard is “inorganic demand” - just as companies were/are printing to the perceived inorganic demand. His focus was centered around print runs staying reasonable and hoarding supply that he can slowly release on the market so it doesn’t get flooded, selling at a premium. Just like De Boers and Diamonds, if they sold what they mined in a given year prices would tank (hence the term cartel). I agree with all the opportunity comments moving forward but at the same time product hoarding is leading to over-printing and Rudy is the face of product hoarding on KZbin. Regardless of product hoarding in life saying “so and so told me do something” never eliminates your personally accountability for your choice to buy these products.

@@fatmakesyoufat SP have about 10% upside from here, and about a 50% downside risk, So not the time to be loading up on the SP In 2 years it will be, so sell the MTG now before it goes lower, and sit on the sidelines until the market sells off. Can also wait for Bitcoin to pullback to 32k area, buy some, be prepared to add some more if it gets down to 25-28k, then it will make the move to new all time highs. MTG secondary market is clearly on a steep decline at this point. There are hundreds of card games, sport cards, TCG, and collectibles that went down and never came back and never will. Japan is littered with decades old TCG games in sealed boxes that nobody cares about and you can buy 30 year old boxes of card for $30-40. No different than here. Another reason why prices on MTG won't increase sunstantially if at all, there are many bag holders, many will need money at times and there will always be this supply dribbling in, while many still hold strong until its their turn to bail. If price ticks up a bit, some bag holders will unload, driving it back down. Vicious cycle, and you still got all the minime Rudies with their mini hoards waiting to unload.

I don't necessarily agree that in the long term it is bound to go in your favor. For example it you kept investing in tube televisions knowing LED televisions exist and are gaining traction... you'd have to sitting on a warehouse of tube TVs to maintain that level of cope.... But seriously. I do think paper could be a solid investment, but it has to be taken out of the hands of those currently handling it. They do not understand they are making a collectible product, they just think they are making toilet paper, so the more they sell, the more they profit. Which of course, is things you've already said. It could all come crashing down, and maybe it should; and needs to. So these IPs can fall into the hands of people who understand what they are. Then your warehouse of cardboard is suddenly worth a whole lot more.

People don't "like to be negative" when things are bad. The negativity is a defense mechanism because when things are bad, the amount of false opportunities that pop up increase to try and counterbalance net loses from things being bad. People behave in the opposite manner when things are good because the space is more filled with legitimate opportunities. It's a matter of the risk reward profile of the time. Not that people get off on feeling right about a take that's easy to get behind depending on the timing. At the end of the day, all you're advocating for is higher risk higher reward action and arguing that the risk is perhaps lower than it seems on the surface. But TBH, your rhetoric just sounds like every other coin flip decision now. Especially hocking your grading company. Not saying you can't promote it, but like... it's giving rhetorical conflict of interest.

To be honest, I never bought any F&B or Metazoo because I simply did not want to. I really do not like the games or the cards... F&B art is actually excellent, but the game is basically non-existent in my area. If I ask a LGS about it, they always say "yeah I order a box or two for the people that want to collect it" which means no one plays it. I've purchased items from Rudy that ended up taking a dump on the market, but I don't blame Rudy. I'm the stupid ass that bought it, but I also open 90% of what I buy... I don't have a storage unit full of sealed product sitting around that I think is basically like bricks of gold. I do have probably half a closet full of unopened Commander decks that I've been accumulating for about 6 years, but laziness is the main factor that has kept them sealed.

collectibles generally have a 30-40 year lifespan at most. The toys that were hot 20-30 years ago, robots, western stuff, lunch boxes, pedal cars, and more, are all selling for less than they did back then. So in reality for each $1 invested in that stuff back then, buys you about 25 cents today. Lost huge on those collectibles.

However, when something is way overprinted and/or gets last year's treatment, someone might think that, even if the tide turns, it won' t change. Products before and after that time frame? Yes for sure, why not. 2022 whole lineup? That's a scary question to me... Also (off topic), since this is a long term reasoning, I wonder what happens long term when a product comes out and outshines its predecessors for some new feature or whatever. Example: variants' evolution. Or serialized cards even. If I take a product that was released before but not so long before the one that changed everything, with both print runs reasonably comparable, what will happen to the older one in the long run? Is there a correlation between the two? Will they have both enough air to breathe or will one overshadow the other?

You are asking to many questions. Just blindly buy every single collector box. That is what the "investment guru" rudy tells his timmys to do. Anyone with an actual brain knows wizards is trying to suck every last drop out of the secondary market. Even if they change course. That doesn't unprint all the overprinted garbage.
Dear Rudy: You are the Problem.
