I was just thinking does the OP has this. This was a rare one. It was one of the rare times when artists lipsynced during this era. Cause she did a live vocal over the track with Don't Take It Personal, Angel of Mine, and All Eyes on Me on the 2nd iteration of the show. I think IMX performed the most on All That then Monica is a close second.

I hope they don't beat me up for this. But I think this song challenged her as a vocalist and instead of growing Monica became very stagnant. Monica was on path to be the next vocal great, and her early producers really pushed her vocally. We know that David Foster love BIG voice singers and big notes. I think when it came time to perform live, she was lazy to attempt it. Once artists become bigger and gain more control they have more say. It's kind of sad how she had not grown as an artist or vocalist.

@@brucep9393 I agree with you 100%. She was at her absolute best vocally on her debut but as time went on she just stayed in a comfort zone. I own all her albums but is it weird to say I don't know who she is as an artist? Like, what's her identity? Her peers, Brandy and Aaliyah, have distinct identities as artists. I'm a fan and want her to win but I wish she would push herself vocally and artistically.

Ya'll are both wrong about Monica growing vocally. Have you not heard the Still Standing album? "One In A Lifetime" "Everything To Me" "Love All Over Me" All big vocal performances from last decade. Hell, even the newer song she did with Brandy had good vocals and they performed it live a lot without lip syncing. I can agree with some points you all have made. Monica had been through a lot of personal trauma and as you know, that can affect all of us differently. My biggest issue with Monica and Brandy and other artists from that era (who are not Beyoncé) is their refusal to reinvent themselves (and work with better songwriters and producers). I get disappointed because these vocal giants from back then just aren't living up to it anymore. But who am I to judge? I still appreciate all the art they've gifted us. But saying Monica hadn't grown vocally since her debut album is objectively false.
