There was something so special about Monica at night…the sound of her ground strokes…the way she hit the ball when there was no wind and the sun was down. Also, there was something different about her focus when she knew she was the favorite to win a match. She rarely lost to a player ranked below her. The grunt and the teeth grinding was on another level when she was suppose to win. God I miss her.

so true and when she dominated from 90-93 she never really felt like the underdog, maybe against Graf on grass but when she believed she was better she played much better and this happened against everyone except maybe three or four players above her from 1996-2002

⁠@@bryguy0111I dont even think she had the time to feel like an underdog against Graf on grass. Their rivalry was cut short way before she could feel like that. They played each other only twice on grass. You can count out 1989. Monica was only 15 and in her first year on tour. Then they only played again in 1992 and we know what happened at that tournament for Monica. Without the stabbing I think she would have eventually beaten Graf on grass. Before the stabbing I dont think she felt like an underdog against anyone. I mean why would she? She was the best player in the world. After the stabbing, I think she felt like an underdog against Hingis, Davenport (later on) and the Williams sisters. Yes you said it, when she believed she was better she played much better and almost never lost. Which is sad, perhaps a lack of confidence after that stabbing because her tennis alone was still the best. No one hit the ball like her even after the stabbing. Her groundstrokes were still the best. Mentally she was still the best on a tennis court. However I think physically she knew she was the underdog. She knew she wasn’t a great natural athlete and she knew, physically, that she had her demons. Thats what changed after the stabbing.

Seles then lost to peak Venus in the final. Venus was unbeatable that year.

Monica had star power....something lacking from women's tennis these days. She played the game in a completely different way than we had ever seen before or since. Not just the pace of shot, but the angles and point construction were outstanding. She would break down your best shot in order to beat you. Example...the cross court exchanges between the Seles backhand and the Graf forehand. She was not afraid of the Graf forehand at all. The Seles backhand was at least as powerful and way less unforced errors than the Graf forehand. That's how she beat Graf in 3 of their first 4 slam finals. Watch them again if you don't believe me. Graf never had an opponent challenge her forehand. She didn't know what to do under those circumstances.

Seles was a child prodigy..she can construct points at young age beating the in-form & seasoned gunther parche graf in her own game

Im impressed with anna strokes. She has talent , needed a decent coach, focus and a bit more time. But at times match the power of monica

GREAT MATCH. I REALLY MISS MONICA SELES. GREAT PLAYER. IF IT WASN'T FOR THAT HORRIFIC STABBING, I HAVE NO DOUBT SHE WOULD HAVE 25-30 GRAND SLAMS TITLES. NO DOUBT. AT 18YO SHE HAD 6 SLAMS. AS FOR KOURNIKOVA SHE WOULD HAVE BEEN A CONTENDER IF SHE WASN'T PREOCCUPIED WITH HER BEAUTY. SHE WAS A TOP DOUBLES PLAYERS.

Talented as Kournikova was, she was no match for the GOAT. She was only able to win 1 or their 6 matches, and that’s against Monica in her second career when she was 75% of her former self.
