The thing about the story of Medusa (and most stories in mythology in general) is that it’s widely a matter of interpretation. These stories have been told and retold hundreds of times over the millennia so certain details get muddled or lost. There are versions where Medusa and Poseidon’s relationship was completely consensual, and versions where it wasn’t, and both are valid interpretations. Even today we’re reinterpreting Medusa’s story with a version that Athena’s curse was actually a gift to protect Medusa, which they played around with here. The stories exist to be whatever we need them to be, there’s no definitive version and I think that’s a good thing. It’s how we can get Percy Jackson, and God of War, and American Gods, and all be incredible stories in their own right. Love your reactions, and the show is incredible and can’t wait for more.

@@jrlombardi5251 it also doesn’t help that Athena assisted Perseus on his quest to slay Medusa and then proceeded to put Medusa’s severed head on her shield afterwards. But it’s an interesting take to say the least.

The thing is, Medusa being a mortal woman was never a part of the Greek mythology, as far as we know. It was the Roman poet Ovid who wrote the story of her being cursed by Minerva after her rape by Neptune. As far as Greek myth was concerned, Medusa had been born a monster and even had two equally monstrous sisters. She was pregnant by Poseidon when she died which led to Pegasus and Chrysaor leaping from her neck stump (yeah), but the story of her rape and being cursed is Roman.

The way the whole Medusa fight scene turned out was a major upgrade to me. It fully captivates not just Medusa's character mythologically (people are mad about her not fighting, but the thing is she's not a fighter, she's mischievous and manipulative, she uses words and her powers) but also shows a lot of the trio themselves. Something I always thought it was weird was how long it took for them in the book to figure out she was Medusa and to come up with a plan. Them just immediately making up a plan by simply improvising and surprisingly working feels more in character for me.

Medusa’s story is very interesting in this episode and the way they depict her gives off strong alien vibes and I love the fact that Percy sang Grover’s consensus song itself so funny and such good comedic timing! Also Annabeth’s character here is so sad on the outside she seems very strong, stubborn and very determined to always get things right and do things right on her own side kind of way but on the inside she actually just wants to be accepted and loved by people and I just love how they depicted things between her and Percy and Grover’s character is just perfect the shy outgoing boy who also just wants to go on crazy adventures with his besties and also try to keep his friends from fighting and keeping them on track with the quests I kind of assumed Annabeth would take that role but I loved Grover in that role cause he’s just so funny and strong headed 😊❤ Loved this reaction as always! 🎉

Medusa’s story has a lot of versions. The original Greek version is that Medusa was born as a gorgon then there is the Ovid version. Ovids version it the one most people know. It’s where Medusa got SA by Poseidon. That version also has different interpretations, some think that Athena punished Medusa and others think that Athena granted her a gift of being able to defend herself by turning people into stone. Sorry this is a really long comment I just really love mythology lol

7:40 It was actually a gift from Athena, Poseidon being a God and Brother of Zeus Athena didn't have the power or authority to punish him for what he did and knowing Medusa would be cast out, vulnerable and unable to protect herself from men who might take advantage of her like Poseidon did Athena gave her the power so that no man could ever hurt her again, and that any that tried to do so would be turned to stone.

It is important to point out that the story where Medusa is Rword for Poseidon came to be written centuries later by the Roman Ovideo, who resented the Gods and did not like Athena for having been exiled from Athens, it was also a way to make the faithful question the gods and going to Christianity, it was cowardly cultural violence against Athena, where in other stories it punishes abusers 😉

Well actually, Medusa wasn't "assaulted" by Poseidon in the actual/original mythology. At the very least there is no direct reference to the exact nature of the sex she had with Poseidon. The concept that Poseidon forced himself on her is a much more modern take (and obviously with the rise of feminism and lot of authors just took that idea and ran with it). In the original story, the reason Athena was so pissed at Medusa is because Medusa was a lifelong worshipper of Athena and then the second Poseidon showed up Medusa became infatuated/fell in love (depending on the version of the story) with him instead and then they had sex in Athena's sacred temple. Not only was Athena extremely pissed about one of her maidens, who were supposed to swear off sexual/romantic relationships, having sex, but she did it inside of Athena's temple. And on top of that, Poseidon and Athena already had previously established animosity in Greek and Roman mythology. So Athena didn't unjustly punish a victim of sexual assault. She punished a woman who broke her vows to her patron Goddess (Athena) and had sex with a rival God in Athena's sacred temple. Ovid was the first one to make a reference to Medusa being assaulted. No iteration of the story before his ever does. And before the Poseidon/Medusa/Athena story Medusa was actually just born as a Gorgon on day one. And one of the main reasons Ovid changed the story was because he had beef with the Roman Empire so a lot of his retellings of the myths that were important to them feature the gods being assholes as a form of protesting authority. While you can't directly prove it (cause we cant ask him) Ovid making Poseidon into a rapist and Athena cruel and uncaring could simply be chalked up to Ovid being petty about authority figures. Now, it's important to note that when it came to maidens, the gods were actually extremely unfair. Whether a maiden had sex voluntarily or not they would still be punished if they broke their vow, even if it was because of being assaulted. Which is obviously unfair but lol, the Greek gods weren't exactly forgiving or understanding at any point. I mean Athena has punished people with equally wild curses for far less.

I didn't exactly remember medusa's story and was pretty confused from the one they told in the show. They avoided it for the younger audience but again it would've been nice and rather not incomplete. Like why did Athena felt embarrassed? It was cause the whole thing took place inside her temple. And then they could have done a little bit of curse/gift thing explaining that it was to protect her from other men.

I was soooo hoping and thinking Medusa was played by the movie’s Annabeth from looking at her smile. I thought that woulda been cool for the previous daughter of Athena to play Athena’s victim/protégée. Another take on the myth is that Poseidon sexually assaulted Medusa and Athena couldn’t punish her uncle so she made it so that anyone who gazed upon Medusa would be petrified, preventing them from hurting her. She did it to protect her. But it’s Ancient Greece. So that’s probably just a modern reinterpretation cuz women didn’t have much agency in these myths. The gods, especially Athena, are jealous and petty. She’s my favorite deity but yeah she’s problematic. Haha. Poor Ariadne.
@islasullivan3463
@islasullivan3463 5 ай бұрын
Yeah in the more modern reinterpretation Medusa has essentially been given the gift to turn the male gaze into a weapon primarily against men, so that anyone who tries to objectify her will be turned into a statue, they become a literal object.

I actually didn't like how they put Hermes to deliver the package He's too busy to personally take a package to Olympus, in the second book he spoke to Percy for five minutes and ended up with over 1000 missed calls, he does NOT have time to play around Also, that's a thing about the series that i'm not enjoying: the gods don't look like gods, we talk about how powerful they are and stuff but they look like ordinary human beings, In his first interaction with Dionysus, Percy irritated him and Mr.D made him hallucinate about being turned into a dolphin and run over by a truck Medusa looked way more like a goddess then him, the menacing presence and constant tension, her every step imbued with confidence and certainty, this is what the presence of a god should be like
