While he does shine here and there, I do really wish Stottlemayer had more scenes where he demonstrates that he's a good detective as well. Maybe not as good as Monk, but definetly solid in his own right Because, really, they both noticed something that was staring the other in the face and both were needed to solve it. Monk pointed out how ludicrous it was that the killer threw the body out the window, drawing unneccesary attsntion to himself, unless he knew he had a rock solid alibi. Meanwhile, Stottlemayer presented a simple solution to a, at first glance, mindbending problem which ended up being kind of accurate to what the killer actually did.

I watched this episode when I was like 12 or 13. And when I saw the title I still remembered clearly how the guy had done it! This is what is amazing about the show, the crimes are so criative that they stick with you. This idea is genius!

In later seasons Monk doesn't know how to work a VCR for some reason and doesn't even know the words for rewind, pause and fast-forward. I don't know why the writers felt the need to make him inept. He was obsessive and compulsive but he was not stupid or sheltered but some of the writers decided they were the same thing and it annoys me every time I watch him act like a bumbling fool.

@hockey1freak, we have that kind of running where I live, except of course not that many runners. A roughly 60 mile race from Lincoln to Omaha, is usually 8-10 people taking turns. A vehicle picks the stray runners.

Even if Trevor DID retrieve the chip... they could still get him on the TIME STAMPS... see, the time stamps of the checkpoints would coincide and be synced to the cameraman footage as well. They would see every other runner at those checkpoints around the same time the motorcycle cameraman was there, but not Mr. McDowell.

The famous runner the camera was following was well past the peak of his career. His finishing time of 3:41:18 would've been over an hour behind the leaders (the slowest ever winning time in the SF marathon was 2:37:27). No one would've looked into the time of a middle-of-the-pack runner.
