Monkey Island 2 Ending [SPOILER]

The ending of Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge. As well as another Star Wars reference. That said, this is the end sequence to the game, if you haven't beaten it yet then you may want to avoid this video.

I think the ending was very dark. Ripping off your own brothers leg with a voodoo doll, Finding out, even with the twisted ending, Chuckie is still evil. Elaine worried about Guybrush, they both turn into kids and you find out it was an illusion!

I remember the Voodoo lady mentioning that big whoop was more than a treasure, it was a door to another world and the key to Guybrush escaping Lechuck once and for all. Remember the four Pirates that discovered Big Whoop never wanted anyone else to find it? It probably wasn't because there was a giant bounty of gold and jewels buried there. After the credits marley mentions that she hopes guybrush hasn't fallen under one of lechuck's spells, and before that we see chucky's eyes glow red with lighting suggesting things aren't quite as they seem. I feel the ending to Monkey island 2 could be interpreted many different ways. My theory is when guybrush fell into that hole he fell through a portal that leads to one of many parallel universes. The one he ended up in he just happens to be Lechuck's brother and they are kids at a theme park. It's also possible that eerie maze of corridors they were in before could have been a state of limbo where element's from both worlds collide, hence the skeleton's of Guybrush's parents, Also memories from both worlds may start confusing your perspective of which one you came from. Judging by the last glimpse of Chucky (maybe in this dimension he's a Terminator instead of a Ghost Pirate?) it's possible that he'll continue to pursue poor Guybrush throughout this and other dimensions, thus making their conflict never ending. I think this is probably one of the best endings in gaming history simply for how out there and open to interpretation it is, they truly gave it their all when they came up with this crazy idea.

That's genuinely interesting. When I played 'M.I.2' on the Amiga so long ago, I thought it was a way of ending the game to suggest an ongoing series of adventures for Guybrush, instead of a definitive ending. The original ending to the game had a series of suggestions to the player of more constructive things to do with their time. It may have been a way of making the point that adventure games aren't that important and that players shouldn't get too immersed in them. Having a non-ending out of left field therefore is a deliberate undermining of the importance of adventure games as an expectation to provide some kind of ultimate fulfillment in completing them to the player. The characters are revealed to be playing and their parents call them out of the game. Also, once LeChuck first zaps Guybrush (in the underground tunnels), everything that happens next may not be actually happening in the game's reality anymore, but may be some cursed state of consciousness. That seems to match Elaine standing over the exploded 'X' clearing showing once again the game's consistent in-game reality instead.

Sorry, I should have been more to the point. When LeChuck blasts Guybrush the very first time, Guybrush comes to again in another section of the tunnels. From that point what happens is in the 'cursed' game alternative reality. Guybrush causes actual harm to LeChuck with the voodoo doll, but his brother is revealed in full physical health. All illusions due to the curse playing out. Guybrush will (after more miss-adventures) escape the curse, probably with the delayed help of Elaine. And then he's back to battling LeChuck in some other 'real' game events.

I assumed that it was indeed the gateway to "another world" and that Lechuck had actually found it first, so it had shaped itself to him. The pair of them were actually trapped in Big Whoop. A sequel, I assumed, might adopt the multi-character dynamic of the other Lucasarts adventure games post-MI2. Sam N Max, Day of the Tentacle with you switching between Elaine and Guybrush. Fair play to Curse though, it did a damn good job of picking up the story and letting people continue to play in this mad little pirate world.

I personally think that the whole theme park and brother thing was a trick by LeChuck...after all, we see Chucky's eyes glow red, and at the end of MI3, Guybrush finds himself back in this very theme park which LeChuck states is his creation. Except this time he can see right through it. Not sure how though...theories?

I think the new designers of 'Curse of Monkey Island' just retcon'd the ending of 'M.I.2: Le Chuck's Revenge'. The explanation doesn't really match up properly. I don't think the Monkey Island games were ever about making the adventure have a genuine pay-off. The games were too meta, anachronistic and irreverent to have a conventional story conclusion. They were more about having as much humor and engaging activity as possible.

The ending was never thought until the last 2 months, and it only was a challenge between Ron Dave and Tim for creating the most twisted possible conclusion. Curse was made to please the fans, I wouldn't count it as the only canon, they're two: 1) Guybrush and LeChuck are kids sort of roleplaying in a park and that's the whole thing, doesn't need a third chapter 2) Guybrush makes a spell on guybrush thus creating CMI timeline

@piopoulip However, in the commentary for the special edition, the developers say that you have to understand a lot of science stuff in order to understand the ending, so maybe it is more complicated than you think. I'm not saying I understand it, but i think it's very deep.

@TheLazysketcher Ok, so if you watch closely at the end Elaine says something about Guybrush being under a SPELL ( seriously, capitol letters in-game) So basically, Lechuck tricked him into believing he is in some child-like fantasy, sort of forever trapping him in the Big Whoop Carnival thing. The other ending is Lechuck using the Voodoo doll on HIM and sending him to a dimension of infinite pain. Try monkey island 3 is you can, they explain it better than me lol

Actually from this that I read online Ron Gilbert did intend on making a third game which would've concluded as a trilogy. He even contacted Lucasarts and told them about plans for making his third game in mind there were people who were interested in doing so. Unfortunately it just never happened and when it didn't Gilbert left taking his "Secret of Monkey Island" with him. Two things they said would have happened in this third game he had in mind: the true Secret of Monkey Island would be revealed but Guybrush and Elaine never marry.

+GamerMoogle what I meant was that one of the two things Gilbert had in mind for Monkey Island 3a, was that the actual secret of Monkey Island itself would be revealed, but when things didn't work out he just never shared it with anyone not even the people who did the third, fourth, and fifth games. The other thing he had in mind for 3 was that Guybrush and Elaine do not marry.

The Carnival of the Damned was LeChuck's Revenge. He placed a voodoo thingy on Guybrush, making him think he was at a normal carnival. Hence, Elaine standing there over the hole saying that she hoped LeChuck didn't put some evil SPELL on G-man Threepdawg.

This is the weirdes ending to any game ever! It feels so surreal... Even in MI3 they managed to explain it a bit, but yet they give it their own twist on it, changing some of it, and all that brother story is very weird and never accounted. I still don't get it 100% after all these years.

As for the ending. 'Little Chuckie's demonic face and Elaine's comment in the end implied that Guybrush was tricked by LeChuck. As for the sibling reference. Just because LeChuck tricked Guybrush in the end, that doesn't necessary mean Guybrush and LeChuck aren't brothers, or actual brothers, it goes both ways really. Sneaky… And also, Ron Gilbert was officially in charge. But that doesn't mean that in reality he came out with those ideas. Everheard the term "ghostwriter"? As for a planned plot twist. Ever heard of Elina Makropulos from The Makropulos Affair? The immortal Singing Diva who regulary changes her name, but kept the E.M. initials. Guybrush should do a further background check on his wife. After all, LeChuck's crew in the first game are her friends when they were alive.

The chapter (I think it's the fifth) 'Kiss of the Spider Monkey' is pretty much dedicated to explaining what happened in 'Revenge'. It's slightly convoluted, but it does just about fix the mess this ending made.

It's more likely that a lot of the series' concept didn't came from Ron Gilbert, but instead somewhere else. Let me assure you, The Keys and The Archives for the series are safely stored away in a safe position, where not even Disney executives can 'Let it go…' Escape from Monkey Island actually follows more of the style of the first two games. A parody of the trademarking on pirate themed themes and the tourist industry. Ozzie Mandrill probably was supposed to be named as Oz Sidney (rhymes with Walt Disney), he was also based on Rupert Murdoch (from Australia). Disney-Fox buying up the properties of Melee Island™? Imagine that, Disney operating a Monkey Island themed resort in the Caribbean. Ha! Ha! Ha! Oh boy… The Pirates of the Caribbean and the 'recent' purchase of LucasFilms, anyone? Oh well, Disney probably will transfer the Monkey Island franchise to SEGA anyway. Considering that it seems that SEGA had secret involvements with the series, ever since the first game. Morgan LeFlay and a particular King Arthur themed SEGA game in 2009, anyone?
