12:26 As a Indian myself let me explain what I can So in our Hindu legend, Hanuman was the offspring of Vayu (God of wind) and Apsara Anjana ( female spirit of cloud and water) One fine morning Hanuman was hungry and saw the red sun in sky and mistaking it for ripe mango he leapt up and ate it. Indra ( God of thunder and rain) got enraged and stuck Hanuman with thunderbolt ⚡ ⛈️ and he fell on earth dead . Vayu (air) after witnessing the death of his son withdrew all the air around the earth and all living beings started to die. Then Shiva( God) had to intervene to maintain the balance of earth and resuciated Hanuman so that Vayu could restore air to living beings. After that Indra granted him Vajra ( weapon) making him strongest of being. Agni ( God of fire 🔥) granted him no fire could hurt him . Varuna( God of water 🌊) granted him no water could hurt him and his father granted blessing that he will be fast as wind. All this made God Hanuman immortal being. His story is very rich in our mythologies this was just part of his childhood. He uphelds honour of women and is virtue of courage , loyality and faith. 2.) India has a rich and vibrant communities of Hijra( Transgender). We take thier blessings whenever a new child is born in house. Even in mythology we had 'Shikhandi' trans male warrior in our Hindu text. But despite this Hijra communities still faces discrimination in terms of jobs and society in general. They are one of the most generous communities our country and I hope they get thier due representation of what they deserve. Sorry for the long comment ✨

Everyone online seems to be having a full-blown meltdown over how pretty he is but even better than his looks is how hard he has worked to bring this story to life and how thoroughly the film uplifts those who are marginalised by systemic inequality. HE’S A REAL ONE FOR THAT. 🙊❤️‍🔥🙋🏻‍♀️

I'm over the moon to see him succeeding. Love him since Skins and really like he's taken matters into his own hands and made the movie he wants to make. Is it too late to ask why no one was mentioning him in the conversation for the next James Bond? I echo the get this man in a rom com. He has so much natural charm, he would do beautiful things. Also we know he can do comedy from his skins days

I don't know if all that many people were aware of his martial arts background before this movie since that wasn't what he was known from in his past filmography. That being said, James Bond films are copaganda so I'm fine with Dev Patel NOT being the one to lead that franchise. I also just love that this was an entirely fresh story instead of a corporate product to keep the value of an IP up. 👀😆

12:39 as per legend kid Hanuman becomes hungry and sees the sun and mistakes it for a mango. So he leaps to eat it and lord Indra gets angry for that and intervenes only to give Hanuman a blow. Due to which his cheeks get swollen. This is why he became Hanuman. (in Sanskrit cheek means hanu). Seeing his son in pain, Hanuman's father vayu (god of wind) gets angry and all the gods come to Hanuman only to give Hanuman super powers; he can become huge, tiny, stron. But with great super power he becomes mischievous and hence All the rishis (sages) gave him a boon that he will never remember about his power. Someone has to remind him ....here in Film too it's journey of who he is and what's his power.

Yay! Thank you for sharing! This is all really interesting and helps with getting more of the subtext of the film. It was such a wild ride for me to hear that story told (with way less detail than you did) in the film cause Kid’s mama was all “and there was a big juicy mango” and I went “YUM, I LOVE MANGOES” and then I blinked and the monkey was in trouble with the gods and I went “…well that escalated quickly” 😭

Excellent review Jenevia. I saw the movie opening night and let me tell you, my girlfriend was telling me Dev was now on her hall pass list. I had no choice but to accept her demand. He makes me proud as a fellow Indian, watching a brown man be a leading man, especially in a genre that never shows brown men as anything other than villains or comedic sidekicks. I even admitted to her that he's a handsome man.

Right?? He was so good in the action genre that I’d love to see him do more of that but after hearing how massively injured he was, I would like for him to take a break and do a new nice, peaceful rom com where the most physical stunt he’ll have to do is accidentally run into his love interest for a meet-cute or have an allergic reaction to something and he has to act out the panic of that (before making a full recovery). 😆

10:55 As dev said he also inspired from Hindi films (Bollywood as they call it), you'll find very common genre running through many Bollywood films is vigilante Genre where a guy takes law in to his own hand to fight the oppressors. most of the time in Bollywood films police is shown corrupt and in bed with politicians , who are almost always bad😅. Tho there are High budget copaganda films too. Spritual guru weaponising religion also isn't very new in Bollywood films but very rare it's shown especially now
@kohlinoor

Yep, also it's much more common for men to wear kohl (black powder on the eyelid/waterline of their eyes) on screen even when they're all manly and badass. I don't know if it has cultural symbolism or significance (or if it's restricted to non-urban settings), but you see it in Indian cinema more often.

See, I’ve said before that I’d like to start checking out some Bollywood films but there’s so many that I never know where to start BUT anything anti-police would be GREAT since I want the copaganda far away from me (and if the hero is handsome and wearing eyeliner, that would just be a bonus 😂)

You see, India has many film industries as India has different states with multiple languages and cultures. The one that’s referred to as Bollywood is just the Hindi language one. There are Telegu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Marathi, Bengali, Punjabi, Assamese and Bhojpuri cinema. All make incredible films. Edit: I also recommend “Lunchbox”. Rom com suggestion fm India , any king khan's romcom from his romantic classics like Om Shanti om , DDLJ, or recent ones like RRKPK( rocky aur rani ki prem kahani), Ram leela(romdrom, barfi or Yeh jawani hai deewani. Hijras are primarily intersex , sometimes drag, and rarely trans. Hanuman eating mango was the problem because it was not mango but the sun, the source of all power on earth. Dev parting hischest is a refrence to a atory where hanuman is challenged in essence to part prove his devotion and judgement of the lors rama(protagonist of ramayan) , and he does this by parting his chest revealing image of the lord and his wife. Also what is a mimosa.

WHAT A BANGER. This was a must-see for me, and I caught it opening weekend (something I rarely do). I am also not very well-versed in the current state of Indian politics, but I think the movie gave just enough context. I have heard about some strategic editing to remove possible real-world references and implications, but as far as I can tell, these do not detract from the main rich/poor, privileged/marginalized dichotomy at the heart of the story.

Yeah, and that’s why I made a point of reiterating that ‘eat the rich’ commentary in stories will translate across cultures. We as viewers outside of India can still heavily relate to the story simply by being forced to survive under systemic inequality. It was truly excellent and I didn’t really get into this point in the review but I also really liked the ending because I think that’s the ending that HAS to happen for the story to really hit.

I totally understand indian people that don’t want an NRI telling stories about India, it is mostly a representation issue. When someone almost never sees a positive story about oneself and one’s culture, it is very stressing to see a story that has less than savoury details signed by one’s kin because racists can’t wait to use anything and everything, especially they use the "even one of you "agrees" with me" false argument. I want to say "yes and", yes indian people are valid in feeling hurt and also be assured that racists won’t wait for Dev Patel’s movie to be racist and would ignore any good representation of any minoroties, in order to validate their world view. On the other hand, the positive is that his movie opens slots for more indians people to be in the lead, to create more varied and better stories, to be more than just a stereotype. Also, normal people, with a little bit of media literacy, wouldn’t see this movie and think "india = bad", they would think "Wow! Wherever you are whenever you are, it is the same story, people suffer from the corrupt powerful and we can only be saved if we stick together and fight back for each other". I come from Africa and I live in Europe and let me assure you, when I saw "Monkey man", I saw both my birth country and my residence country, they both suffer from exactly what the movie showed with some variations

Please bear with me with a couple of these comparisons because I am not comparing these to Monkey Man just to compare them. This will be a long one. And some Spoilers for certain movies: Let’s start with the superficial comparison. Slumdog Millionaire. Again, bear with me. The dynamic between the rich and the poor. Sita acting like a Latika equivalent. Some of the camera angles and the way flashbacks were set up reminded me of what we see in Monkey Man. His mom being burned reminded me of the people burning in Slumdog Millionaire. Marvel: Again, the mom being killed in Monkey Man made me think of the scene where Shang chi’s fathers enemies just came in and killed his mother. Don’t ask me why. Tonally, werewolf by night, moonknight, maybe blade popped up in my mind. The themes of starting out as outcasts. Lastly, for this category, Peter Parker. I can’t be the only one who thought this. Started out in a boxing ring. His mom=the uncle ben moment Being a vigilante Being the neighborhood hero. Dev’s characters never went after the innocent. He makes sure they can escape and doesn’t become collateral damage which is something Peter does as well. The sacrifices they have to make and the losses they endure. And last but not least, john wick. This is the most obvious comparison. Him befriending a dog we hope does not get killed. The black suit, slicked back hair, and beard. Him fight choreography. I am sure there is more, but only saw some bits and pieces of the first one.

That was something I was very curious about, actually. I didn’t know if Monkey Man had named anything specific about India’s current political parties, politicians, or had any visual cues, etc. As far as I could tell, the film was entirely made up of fictional characters but I didn’t know if there were some specific references that I didn’t catch because I don’t know enough about India’s current politics to be able to recognise those types of details. That’s another reason why I kept saying in my review that I hope Indian creators will make videos about Monkey Man so they can share those types of insights too. 🔍👀

@@LadyJenevia as far as I know monkey man doesn't explicitly name anything from real life but the corrupt cops and political villains are very much mirrors to the current happenings in india. So the current ruling party bjp and their extremist wing rss (which is basically indian kkk) have been in power for the past 10 years. In these 10 years there has been unprecedented violence and discrimination against minorities. They have bought out all the mainstream media and also have killed and jailed journalists and students who raised questions. They also killed a judge. They cater to adani who is a billionaire and he's buying out all the mountains and forests here. Deforestation is happening rapidly. Crimes against women have risen unbelievably. This bjp party even released 11 rapists from jail and welcomed them with garlands. They believe in hindutva which is an extremist version of hinduism. And now this party and Government is aiding israhell in the genocide of Palestinians. (India was one of the strongest allies of Palestine before this party came in power.) Things are pretty bleak over here but elections are happening next month so we're still holding onto hope. Otherwise the biggest democracy in the world is on its way to become a fascist dictatorship.

@@b_a_t_m_a_n_bro bjp is not kkk, if you have said Goa based right wing part called(sanskari samiti or whatever ) I would have agreed , BJP is nowhere near close. Regarding data of violence against minorities , I would say it is a good thing it is getting reported in the first place otherwise earlier it was banned to shadow realm, it just shows govt have become more proactive in taking these issues seriously, kinda like how India have lowest rate of rape cases recorded in the world but we all know that it is not true, reason being lack of accurate reporting. Regarding paid media , I would disagree because it is only true if you watch tv media, print and internet space is relatively clean and still healthy, and don't fan the flames on a conspiracy theory(judge being killed) , as of now there is no proof of the same, it is akin to conspiracy theories around jfk. Regarding deforestation please read relevant govt reports that used geomapping data from satellites and is verified by various international authorities, India forest land has been relatively same(ever heard of compensates foresting, India have laws that prohibit us fm doing wanton destruction to env). Crimes against women have reason for the same reason crime against minroty have risen as stated above, regarding release of 11 rapist, you forget to mentio. That Indian judiciary have restored those sentences , and that those 11 are just 11 out million of rapist in jails across India, their release in larger contexteant nothing for nation as a whole, and this decision was taken by state authority independent of central govt inputs. India is not heading twds a facist state, even if the ruling party wins with even higher majority, the only way India will ever be one a dictatorship again if our state elections are also won majorly by ruling party at the centre because the last time it happened (1976) , India truly became a dictatorship albeit under a pseudo-socialist regime. Also regarding Palestine, read a bit about India's foreign and security policy, India stance have been same since Narshima Rao's time, neutral , but increasing partnership with Israel, India have no stake in Israel and Palestine conflict and have officially called for cease of hostilities, and it abstained from voting in UN regarding any extremes on the issue, though ruling party's ideology gel more cohesively with ruling part in Israel, India as a state have not supported indiscriminate killing on either sides. My sincere request to you don't bring your myopic political understanding to a complex , multifaceted issue.

@@harshgarg1448 I'm comparing rss to kkk, not bjp. And though the Supreme Court ordered for the rapists to be jailed again, isn't it concerning that they were released in the first place and praised as 'sanskari' by a bjp politician? Also one of these rapists shared the bjp stage as well. And even though there's independent media on the internet still it doesn't change the fact that TV media has been bought. And not to mention they're banning and removing KZbin channels and Twitter handles too. Deforestation is happening its jut that the government is catering to the billionaire and changing the rules to benefit them. The whole of manipur is burning. There's protests happening in ladakh. Jungles being mowed down in chhattisgarh as well. India is on its way to become a dictatorship if us Indians don't open our eyes to the reality.

I think caste critique won't stop the release but the movie targeted modi indirectly so they would cry about it
