Mono captured me when I saw the videos for "Innocence" and "Sorrow" about two years ago. I've loved Mogwai since "Young Team." I've seen GSYBE. To have Mono and Mogwai together in a double headliner show would pretty much be the single most EPIC thing that I could possibly musically experience.

The catharsis of absolute purity! Remember the first time I saw MONO live a while back, standing in the Liquid Room at Ebisu, Tokyo. All of my senses fully engaged and arrested, being frozen on the spot and tears rolling down my cheeks. My girlfriend looking at me and I had no ability to speak or explain anything, and as she quietly smiled I knew I didn't need to.... Nor did any of the other hundreds of souls surrounding me. The realms MONO took us to, then and there, had all the answers. This is their art, a soundtrack to accompany life!

It was fall of 2004 and i had no idea what i was seeing. I walked into the sidetrack cafe in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada to check out Fly Pan Am and was blown away by this quartet from Japan that was opening. I was 20 ft away and it changed my life and music taste forever. I bought the walking cloud deep red sky CD and had them all sign it. It is still among my prize possessions.

I'll never forget the day back in early 2017 or so when this band and I crossed paths (not literally). Since the early 90's I've been a huge fan of 'the Bristol sound' (later known as trip hop, ie portishead, tricky, massive attack, etc) and one of the more glossy/poppy groups from the UK was Mono whose one and only album Formica Blues is one of my favorite recordings ever. Anyway, as a resident of Portland OR (where record stores open, not close) I was flipping through the crates at Jackpot on Hawthorne and saw Mono "Under the Pipal Tree" and nearly had a heart attack. I had no idea there was another Mono and without hesitation assumed after nearly 20 years a 2nd Mono album had dropped. The adrenaline surge you get when you come across a record that almost seems unreal to be there in your hands is something most vinyl junkies get to experience a few times in life, and this was that feeling on steroids!! All plans for the day postponed, a successor to Formica Blues was an EVENT in my mind, like a new Tarantino! This Under the Pipal Tree vinyl also looked incredible, a double LP with one record a deep green marble and the other a hazy grey/monochrome marble, austere/melancholic vibes, I was so excited and wanted to time things right so as I exited the store with my new record I popped an edible, hoping I'd time my walk back over the bridge to my apt downtown just right so that the edible was kicking in nice and strong as I got home, cleaned my turntable, plugged in my Sennheiser cans and dove onto my sofa with either my cashmere blanket or cat, if she wasn't feeling combative, feral and violent that day, to keep me company so I could get a proper introduction to this album. As the biggest pothead I know (and recently crossing into my 40s, that factoid is less a boast and more a reluctant admission) I'm very familiar with edibles, dosing, different feel between distillate, full spectrum, etc, and on top of that my tolerance is up in the firmament, so I didnt hesitate to eat this edible even though there was no mention of the strength on the packaging. Why, you ask? Because at the time, my neighbor was one of around a dozen people in the United States who was salaried to to review marijuana. And as a neighbor and friend of the weed critic for Dope Magazine's Portland OR branch, I benefited via a steady stream of 'product overflow'. In a nutshell because of federal laws prohibiting weed in the mail system, cannabis companies have to have an employee bring their product(s) to the offices for review, and since every company wants a good review they do the hook-you-up thing by bringing *way* more than the minuscule amount necessary for testing, as well as extra 'off-shelf' goodies which were legally too strong for retail sale. Because she was a normal human not a weed garbage disposal, the weed products piled up far quicker than she could enjoy so I was one of the people who would receive a shoebox twice a month jam packed with shatter, bud, gummies, sodas, parmesan crisps, anything you can incorporate thc into, they likely make it and it eventually showed up in one of the shoe boxes. Again, I don’t share all this to brag, but to explain how this situation happened. The edible I’d mindlessly grabbed that morning was one of these unlabeled edibles a company had brought in, indicating not fit for retail so likely stronger than their retail offerings (which max’d at 50mg at the time). Usually these were 100mg, and as someone with no remaining trace of a brain stem or cerebral cortex, 100mg is a very comfortable and enjoyable dose for me. Then I realized there was a serious problem! While edibles always take around 30-45 min for initial effects to appear for me (ymmv, dif for everyone), it was only within about 10-12 minutes that I got my first indication that this thing had already began to take hold, though this doesn’t compare so I wonder if maybe I’m getting sick, but with each 20 or so steps I feel another wave of THC wash over me and that’s when, for the first time in decades, the THC was poured on so thick I started to get hit with the fear, the dreaded fear. Panic led to paranoia as it was kicking in with the fury of an elephant made of solid bronze galloping on my aorta, I realized I still had another 15 or 20 min to walk (and through a super dense/chaotic area) and at this rate, making it home in time while I still had my sanity looked less and less likely. It took forever as anything less than 99% focus on my walking and I would’ve collapsed but I finally managed to google the brand name on the wrapper and hoped I could find a site or menu or something that would enlighten me as to what I just ingested! Frustrated at my inability to comprehend a phone, a browser, or even remember what I was looking up, I sheepishly called my neighbor (cannacritic) who didnt know but said she'd find out… a few min later she texted me saying ‘did you eat it? it's a 500mg, it's for medical (namely end-of-life) patients only, he apologized and said that shouldn’t have been in there, you didnt eat it did you?’ (An aside, after no response due to my disbelief/terror and another 10-15 min of silence she send a followup text with “oh no.. you did”, an exchange I eventually screenshotted and used as the art for some cheap throw pillows I had made, as any classy gent would). Obviously what follows gets hazy but I’ll wrap up this brief comment and say that was the day I found out two things, a) that weed in high enough amounts is truly psychedelic, visual, fractal, lots of tryptamine qualities, and b) this was not the UK Mono, though by the time I got home and figured out how to work my record player I couldn't tell what I was listening to in the first place, then a song called the Kidnapper Bell came on and that was around the moment Japanese Mono dethroned UK Mono. That afternoon I ended up listening to Under the Pipal Tree on repeat for about 6 hours nonstop, green record to grey record back to green over and over, every song amazing, but The Kidnapper Bell was beyond amazing, I eventually started playing just that song over and over while experiencing/enduring a nearly religious rebirth level of introspection as I sat in the passenger seat of my mind as it redefined the parameters of everything I knew (emotions, ice cream flavors, etc) and soundtracking the whole thing was this glorious Pipal Tree album, especially the Kidnapper Bell. I can barely stand to listen to that song these days cause of those memories, they're amazing memories and it was one of the best days of my life (at least once I got home, that mid city trek as my mental state dissolved into the ether and floated away in the sidecar of the Cool Whip guy’s flying tub of whip cream was nearly incomprehensible to fathom at the time, and terrifying) but it was ultimately powerful and amazing. Anyway, hope you enjoyed this very brief diary entry. I don’t mean to sound like I’m bragging, I’m a milquetoast pothead living an uneventful life but that was one of those few awesome days I'll remember even on my death bed and I’m unable to see or hear anything about the Japanese Mono without memories from that day flooding in about a nanosecond later. Under the Pipal Tree is one of the greatest recordings ever made. I’m more of a goth rock, post punk, new wave person but beyond that I gotta say that Mono, Boris and Russian Circles are 3 bands I find incapable of creating bad music. As that crazy day wore on and I slowly returned to earth I realized this was a different Mono and that the record I bought was brand new (pressed in 2017), it was from an album originally released in 2001. I've since become a massive Mono fan and EQD's connection to Mono (and Boris, and Black Keys and so many other bands I love) is reason #38,932 they are my fav pedal purveyor. Also the constant one upping of past ideas. Ledges has clawed into my top 5 reverbs, I really underestimated the magic of that one and I will scream it as long and loud I feel necessary, Zoar at 18v is probably the best drive pedal to ever exist and my fav dirt/distortion/fuzz EQD has ever put out, a position previously held by Talons. I used to own 4 Talons, multiple backups of my fav tone sculpting distortion/od skeleton key pedal, EQD’s ultimate feat, then Zoar comes along and the Talons looked like such a limited rough draft in comparison. I wisely unloaded my Talons inventory before the prices dropped once Zoar proved to be the fully fleshed out ‘final form’ jack of all trades, master of all, one pedal to rule them all, obvious desert island pick, etc. The range of tones, the amazing EQ, from glassy transparent magic (at 18v Zoar is up there with the very finest early Greers like Victory, Royal Frommage/S.B., Golden Nugget, Butter Tone) to what my grandma’s fav tone which she simply refers to as ‘nordicwintertrollmaid enters midwinterfjordcavern and tosses eardrums into ancient cauldron of boiling blood only for eternal iceblade to emerge from the violent crimson boil, swung with all the fury of Thorr and Odin at once, with each swing emitting trillions of bloodthirsty treble soaked icecicles, each one marinated in the iciest frequencies only lost and hopeless souls can hear, aka the haunted high headroom of heaven itself, weeping as it realizes it is no match for Sweet Lucifer and all the glorious sounds storming the nightsky, eternally raging in the throes of infinite cascading dissonant walls of scarysad treble blizzards.’ Grandma says that's just a temporary name til she gets the wording ironed out.

Seriously though, if anyone at EQD is unlucky enough to still be reading I can't stress it enough, Zoar is seriously jaw dropping not just in its range of tones but the quality of sounds across the board, and that EQ alone is why it’ll never leave my board. That it’s only $129 (and the amazing Special Cranker only $99!) meanwhile the flood of basic boilerplate TS/klones seem increasingly comfortable launching with pricetags 2x sometimes 3x more got me thinking about how clearly it highlights the distinction separating those whose love for and belief in what they’re doing shines through in everything they do to the point it is a huge part of reputation/ethos as a whole, which is polar opposite those seduced by the siren call of empty calorie, low effort/high profit nutrient rich cynicism of prefab fomo/collector/status operations. Pedal fan today, pedal cover b(r)and soft launch tonight (obligatory 3 month wait list from the jump, maybe even 9… you already know its going on your board with undeniable quality-verified stats like that). Functionality, effort, innovation, circuitboard… all optional. Poppin enclosure to ensure maximum scalability of likes and social media engagement… 100% necessary. Dazlzle em with the rope a dope barrage of capsules and colorways. the things that will stand the test of time, quality cherished for generations, handed down from father to son. Memories of summers in Maine, fresh lobster and running kites along the sepia shore of Cape Elizabeth... wait, where was I... Ah, yes.. Anyway, Zoar + Ledges is all I truly need, but I want more (especially a Zap Machine reissue). And while I’m at it, I’ve got about 13 or 14 Zoar settings jotted down on notecard, that pedal is capable of almost any guitar tone I need, any way to incorporate the 6-preset feature that accompanies many of the recent releases? The preset option has made these instant buys (Ledges I could use 12 presets!), huge time/stress relievers on stage between songs/parts, but Zoar wasn’t blessed with any preset capabilities. Not sure if the circuitry doesn’t allow for it (I’m pedal stupid), but I’d happily pay a premium for a Zoar with a preset bank of 6 (or especially 12) slots… otherwise I keep a taped notecard on my pedal board (thankfully I own 2 Zoars so I pre-empt the settings on the pedal not being used that song, but its an imperfect system). Hey should I stop mashing keys and hit send? And end my literature project? :( ok

I love it how they stay very true to what it seems, one guitar or bass. I see other musicians using multiple guitars and if you have to play in an open tuning or something its very convenient ofcourse of maybe if you need a different sound. Its likes using a different type of brush when painting or a different colour. Its very subtle but it could help you out writing a new song but I love how devotated they all seem to he to their gear.
