I'm interested in getting a beefier center for this. Will any of the larger Monolith centers be good? I'm aware of "timbre" match, but have really not idea what that actually is and how to do it right. Since these are THX cert, will the non-THX cert centers be good or do I have to buy the 365C to get that "timbre" match??? As an aside, would be great to see a video on this topic. Thanks for making videos on this!

@@ErinsAudioCornerErin, do you think it's possible that the crossovering of the unit you measured was done poorly? I don't see a dip in Monoprice's own measurements, which, I admit have almost 0 info about them, but most of it matches with the results that you obtained, except for the big dip that is at around 1.6khz for your measurements. Theirs do have a dip too, but it's roughly 1-2dB unlike yours, which are roughly 4dB. Would it be possible to measure another set to verify if the dip is actually a nature of the speaker, or if it's a damaged unit?

Good product at a great price! I really hope Monolith/Monoprice does a version of this system with 6.5" drivers. Larger room rating, a touch more efficient, less distortion, and more slam form the increase in cone area. I think three identical speakers across the front with coaxial drivers has real world merit.

Possibly. But I imagine most will be using these with an AVR that has equalization or at least tone controls. Those can easily remedy the HF since these speakers take extremely well to EQ due to their great directivity.

When you measure the 8inch thx subwoofer, can you try it sealed as well? Joe told me in the comments on one of the Daily HiFi videos that it wasn’t tuned to be sealed, but subjectively I like it better that way, as it was chuffing quite a bit for me in the lowend when I had it open. Thanks as always!!

Erin, knowing the volume limitations of these speakers, would you say that these would be a bad candidate as rear surrounds in a large (3000 cu ft) room? Assuming that I’m going for something a bit more sensitive for my LCR and that I would be running a subwoofer. I like how small these are for tucking into our existing furniture and the off axis performance does seem quite nice.

Those look like really neat little speakers. Should work pretty good as a 5.1 multimedia system, if the 8" subwoofer keeps up with them (looking forward to that review too). I am curious though that the null through the x-over region was not a lot deeper when you reversed the connection for the tweeter, particularly as the midrange and tweeter share the same axis. I'm guessing that the built-in x-over can be further optimized, and perhaps that might deal with that dip as well.
@ErinsAudioCorner
@ErinsAudioCorner Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I kind of wonder if it’s not just native in the crossover on purpose, though. It’s just kind of odd, because there doesn’t appear to be any sort of resonance from the driver or the enclosure at that frequency. And it doesn’t look like it would be a diffraction issue because everything looks smooth. Plus the fact that it follows a directivity indicates that it’s early design, almost as if it was an EQ thing.
@Grommet2007
@Grommet2007 Жыл бұрын
@@ErinsAudioCorner It is a bit weird, as if there's better phase tracking through the x-over region (which would produce a much bigger and deeper null if the tweeter is reversed), both the on and off-axis response through the x-over region should be pretty smooth. I wonder if you'd see something similar if you reverse the tweeter connections on another coincident speaker design, like the KEF speakers?

THX compact and THX select is the average room size for almost all viewers. Ultra & dominus is for home theathers. But even then, I've seen those ultra rooms are designed wrong so many times, that they are a waste of money in my opinion. Compact & Select is the sweetspot for probably 3 standard deviations worth of people. Compact and select is the average scaled down version of a home theather. Looking at THX specs, they recommend a view angle of horizontal 40 degrees to the TV/display they are viewing. 40 degree view angle is about 8.5 ft from a 77 inch tv. And the 77 inch oleds from LG are a bargain. Last years LG c2 at 77 inch is a phenomenal TV, and this speaker would compliment that so well, if seated appropriately.

The video "What Is Frequency Response? || Understanding the Measurements Part 1" really good video, I saw 2 years ago, in this opportunity had a doubt about how you determinate the mean SPL meter, sometimes I knows the specification are calculated putting a 1 KHz / 2.83 V /1m, but you said "... calculated the mean SPL over a range of 300 Hz to 3 KHz so basically you know the typical human voice region and in doing so I've also said okay now based on that mean SPL what is the plus or minus one and a half dB region and then what is the plus or minus 3 dB" So this is your standard calculation or use another standard like ITU or ANSI? Now I'm going to watch chapter II again, I hope I can find the description of F3 and F10, maybe I missed something.

Would, I think make a good cheap set of Atmos heights in a small 5.1.4 system in a tiny room (l.t. 1000 cf).

Great video! I’m doing an atmos setup in my 11x13x8’ room using seven to eleven of these speakers together. The center speaker will be 8’ away and the LR’s will be 8’ 6” from my listening position. Do you think they will work well at those distances? I don’t listen to anywhere near reference. Thanks

Just keep volume at a reasonable level and use a subwoofer and you should be OK.

Would this work well as a satellite speaker for sides and rear in a 7.X.X system in a medium to large room or is the efficiency going to be too low to be powered by typical AVRs in this price class? Most people won't be using an external amp for surround speakers. Maybe pair it with Q350s or Q150s for mains and center. It seems like the directivity is excellent allowing good sound across all seats, they're small enough to mount discreetly to a wall. And they reach 80hz which makes them easy to crossover in a surround system.

I think so.

They also have the "on-wall" version that has 2 radiators to effectively boost the sensitivity by about 3db and extreme the F3 by 10Hz. I'm thinking those for surrounds, with these for Atmos.

How would you feel about trying to use these as Front/Rear height speakers (mounted on the top of the front and back walls) in a medium sized room?
@ErinsAudioCorner
@ErinsAudioCorner Жыл бұрын
I think they’d do well for that as long as you didn’t crank them and used a proper crossover.

they're low Sensitivity 81.0dB (2.83V@1m). make sure others speakers have same sensitivity rating. or one loud, one too quiet

Honestly the sub could be hot garbage and the 5.1 would still be a good deal at ~$400

The pricing makes no sense to me. These are supposedly worth $249 a pair? And the 8" THX sub is $349? But somehow you get 5 speakers and the sub for $389? Something doesn't pass the smell test. I'll be curious to see where the pricing shakes out when the stuff comes back in stock. Looks like Monoprice flooded KZbinrs with samples and and now all these components are sold out!

Not sure. Remember, I said at the beginning of this video that I received these from a viewer. Monoprice didn't send me these particular speakers.

I have the Bose Companion 20 computer speakers. No sub. They fill an entire 14 X 12 room with music no problem. I don’t understand all this boom boom stuff needed to play music. 😳🙄 People today must have a considerable amount of hearing damage to have to play loud music. Don’t need to play them “Loud” at all to fill the entire room with music. They give just enough bass for me with the rear port 6 inches from the wall. I play all types of music genres except bass heavy music like rock and heavy metal. They are not made for that boom boom sound.

Bose Companion 20 speakers are ok if you don't mind not having average sound quality! But you can buy much better sounding speakers for not that much more money 🤑

i would never understand why a small speaker is ''ok'' for small room, if they don't make 30hz bass the music will sound boring as hell... personally i have a floorstanding with roomEQ in my small room, works very good 30hz +0dB / 25hz -6dB hehe Pd: good video, as always
