In this workshop artist Naomi Frears will show you how to create a monoprint without the use of a printing press. Reusing images from old magazines is perfect for this, but you can also use postcards you might have at home and no longer need.
You will need:
• A4 paper
• A shiny hard surface that can be wiped clean. This could be a piece of perspex,
plastic, old mirror or glass.
• One or two old magazines
• Two or three ink rollers (An example can be found here:
www.greatart.co.uk/essdee-professional-ink-rollers.html)
• Water-soluble printing inks in two or three colours: black, white and a colour of your choice (An example can be found here: www.greatart.co.uk/essdee-pre...)
• Scissors (you can also tear paper)
• Rags and soapy water or biodegradable baby wipes
• Biodegradable bamboo cotton buds (optional)
Naomi Frears is a visual artist and filmmaker based in the Porthmeor Studios in St Ives. She works across multiple platforms including painting, printmaking and film and is well known for her enigmatic and subtly haunting paintings. In her monochromatic paintings of figures lost in thought in an internal landscape, the lightness and open-endedness conventionally associated with drawing (as opposed to painting) is evident. Her work has been exhibited widely including at Tate St Ives, Newlyn Gallery and Bold Tendencies in London.
We would love to see your artworks, so please share them with us using the hashtag #HRDigitalArtSchool or by tagging us on Instagram (@_hospitalrooms) or Twitter (@hospital_rooms)!

The best monoprinting video I’ve seen. Naomi is so knowledgeable, articulate and gifted as a teacher. The fact her accent sounds so similar to Bowie’s is just an audio bonus. Thank you so much for sharing this valuable and inspirational video.

This was great! Thank you so much! I really appreciate your pedagogical approach. You’re offering techniques and not “prefab” projects. I like your emphasis on process over product.

Thank you for clarifying that these are monotype techniques, not monoprints. It's really confusing that most videos on youtube confuse monoprints for monotypes when there is a clear difference between the two. @Hospital Rooms

Your mission is wonderful and so important! Art has been proven to have emotional and even physical healing power for certain. I do fine art, paper crafting & mixed media and always like to see quick and easy techniques that anyone can use. I’m in the U.S. and watch a good bit of UK 🇬🇧& EU 🇪🇺 art channels and of course lots of U.S. 🇺🇸 art channels. I just subscribed👍🤗

1) How can you make something not random, i.e. print a photograph for example? 2) I thought « printing » (compared to painting) was about repeatability, I don’t see how you would be able to print the same thing or even roughly the same thing over and over again? So why is it called mono « printing »?
@rhessex
@rhessex 3 жыл бұрын
A print is an image made by pressing paper onto a surface covered in ink. It's called a 'mono'print I think because in this kind of printing each print is unique.
