How critical is it that the dominant eye is set for distance? I ask because I believe my ophthalmologist /surgeon has set my left apparently non-dominant cataract affected eye for distance. He said he couldn't determine which eye was dominant because of the cataract. However, I did explain to him prior to surgery that I sight a camera with my right eye, not my left I use a telescope with my right eye, etc. as well but he seems to have ignored that. My remaining right eye is nearsighted and not cataract affected and the difference now is about 2 diopters between the two eyes. It's only been 4 days, but I'm finding it a bit hard to adjust and am hoping that I can be corrected in my right eye so that the diopter difference is more like 1.0 diopter rather than 2.0. So two questions actually: 1) What is the max diopter difference at which mono vision is tolerable generally speaking? and 2) How critical is it that the dominant eye is set for distance? or can there be success as well if the non-dominant eye is set for distance? I've been wearing nearsighted contact lens since I was in 6th grade and my close vision has never been bad even today at age 48. All of a sudden I noticed my close vision is only bad when I wear contacts and if I take my contacts off at night I have no problems with my close vision reading books or Iphone. I just came back from my yearly eye doctor and monovision option wasn't mentioned to me. They had me try out multifocal lens which were horrible.

Doctor, question please: I have had cataract surgery in my R eye for distance and it has worked giving me better distance vision. Next, I am doing a contact lens trail for short distance in my L eye to see if Monovision will work. If I then go ahead with cataract surgery for near distance in the L eye (which has a more minor cataract compared to the right eye but I prefer to get this done now rather than later in life), but if after surgery I find I can't focus and see the detail on my computer screen for my work, will glasses help in this situation? Also, can I get glasses that will enhance distance vision for when I am driving?

I am scheduled for cataract surgery next week and have gone back and forth on lens choice. I am scheduled to go with monofocal lenses in each eye set differently for monovision as I have successfully done with wearing just one contact for many years now. I believe this will allow for the best of both worlds and without the negative “side effects” of premium lenses, namely driving in the rain at night type situations. Plus the added cost “side-effect”. Thinking about setting near at 21” for computer and dash board.

Monovision cataract surgery destroyed my distance vision. Driving at night is very challenging. Monofocal must be the better than this stupid monovision

I had monovision done 2days ago with Laser Vision SA and I was promised I could read and use the laptop. I cant use the laptop. I am so upset I was lied to. I did a contact lense trial which was successful so I could read and use the laptop and was told this is what I will receive with the surgery. Now I have to still get prescription glasses

Im 41 and I don’t have trouble reading close. But I don’t want to use reading glasses in the near future. I’m getting LASIK done . Should I choose monovision to push away the possibility of needing reading glasses?

How long will it take me to get used to it - I don't enjoy the blurry distance vision - my script is L-eye +2.00 and R-eye a slight astigmatism - I've been trying for approximately a week!

To be honest, I now have implants ( with monovision) after cataract surgeries, and....I simply HATE that! It may be wonderful for reading, but the gap between the two eyes is to important, and it ends up into a catastrophy to see distant objects due to severe disbalance, espescially at night time + the halos phenomenon being aggravated with multifocal lens with one eye undercorrected. Think about it.....better have glasses for very close reading and have the same vision in both eyes, anyway you'll see good enough to see sharply your car's board......

Fully agreed to have same eyesight in both eyes. Before, I also considering to have monofocal IOL lens in one eye and have multifocal IOL on the other eye. But I am also in huge hesitation if the multifocal lens would affect my eyesight in night driving as according to a lot references in Google and KZbin that the multifocal lens has common problems like halo and starburst or glare when in night driving. So for me (as this is very subjective and depend to our need whether to still driving at night quite often or not) I think its better to have very clear and crisp sight for distance and use spectacle for near sight. In case of cataract surgery then the choice should be very firm and final because we could not easily change the IOL lense(s) like we change glasses. Have a good yet comprehensive consultations with the opthalmologist to decide the best.

Monovision can be easily corrected with contact lens.

Sir I am blind as a bat yet I wear contacts. I only wear one and change eyes often. I can see far and read tiny letters. I just figured this on my own.

Five weeks ago I got monovision using PRK in my dominant eye(my other eye was not treated because I could still see up close good with it) . I still can’t see good at a distance with this eye. How long should it take for my distance vision to come in?

i had monovision before with contacts & they were fine, no I went to a different place to get new prescription for contacts. well my right eye is dominant, but with these new ones my right eye which has the distance contact its giving me a slight blur when it comes to reading. I think my right eye should be for reading and my left eye should be for distance. I never had this problem before only in these new ones. it also feels like i need a stronger prescription, what do you think?

So is it natural that I can see things close and far clearly with my left eye but with my right eye I can only see close things clear but far things blurry

I do not want to wear glasses. my eye doctor said i need 1.50 he has me trying the biofinity multifocal contacts. How long does it take for the fuzzy vision to go away and does that seem like the right choice. my distance is just fine.

I was fitted with monovision contact lenses but I was fitted with my dominant eye to see at near and my non dominant eye fitted for the distance. The reason that this was done because I naturallyl see better in the distance with my non-dominant eye and better at near with my dominant eye. Could I get your opinion if this is how you would have fitted your patient. It bothers me that my dominant eye is fitted with a contact to read with and the non dominant eye fitted to see at far. Thanks!
